Chapter 5: The Secret Recording

The voice coming from Vanessa’s phone filled the room.

At first, nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Because everyone recognized it.

It was Vanessa.

Caleb felt the hair rise on his arms.

The video wasn’t showing the broken television.

It wasn’t showing Nia.

It wasn’t showing anything that made sense.

It showed a dark room.

A desk.

A lamp.

And Vanessa sitting in front of the camera.

The timestamp appeared at the top of the screen.

Three days earlier.

Before the broken TV.

Before the argument.

Before anyone knew anything was wrong.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“What is this?””

Vanessa reached forward.

“Daniel, give me that.””

He stepped back.

“No.””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Fear.

“Daniel.””

He ignored her.

He pressed play.

Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the room.

“I’m running out of patience.””

Caleb’s eyes widened.

On the screen, Vanessa leaned closer to the camera.

Her expression was completely different from the one she showed the family.

No softness.

No kindness.

No careful smile.

Just anger.

“Nia thinks she can keep fighting me,” the recorded Vanessa said.

“She thinks because she’s Daniel’s daughter, she’s untouchable.””

Nia covered her mouth.

Her eyes locked on the phone.

“That’s not…”

She couldn’t finish.

Daniel looked at her.

Then back at the recording.

Vanessa continued.

“But children eventually learn who has control.””

The video paused.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Everyone stared.

“You don’t know?””

“I don’t know why that video exists.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“It’s your phone.””

“Someone could have taken it.””

Nia let out a quiet laugh.

A painful laugh.

“Seriously?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“What?””

“You expect us to believe someone stole your phone, recorded you, saved the video, named the file, and returned it?””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re enjoying this.””

Nia’s expression changed.

“No.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I’m finally being heard.””

The words hit him.

Daniel looked away.

Caleb watched his father carefully.

He had spent months believing his dad didn’t notice anything.

Now he wondered if maybe his father had simply never looked closely enough.

The video continued.

Daniel pressed play again.

Vanessa’s recorded voice returned.

“She needs to understand that this is not her house anymore.””

Nia froze.

Caleb looked at her.

Her face had gone completely blank.

The kind of blank people got when something hurt too much to react.

Daniel’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa immediately answered.

“It’s taken out of context.””

“Then explain the context.””

“I was frustrated.””

“With my daughter?””

“With the situation.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You said it’s not her house anymore.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I meant the family needed boundaries.””

Nia whispered.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“That’s not what you meant.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know what I meant.””

“Yes, I do.””

Nia stepped forward.

“Because you’ve been saying it since you came here.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Nia.””

“She changed everything.””

“Nia.””

“She moved Mom’s pictures.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“That was years ago.””

“She packed away Mom’s things.””

“Because the house needed to move forward.””

Nia’s eyes filled.

“She threw away the flowers Dad bought for Mom.””

Daniel went still.

“What?””

Vanessa immediately looked at him.

“I didn’t throw anything away.””

Nia shook her head.

“Yes, you did.””

“I reorganized.””

“You called them old junk.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Did you?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t remember.””

Nia stared at her.

“You always say that.””

The sentence hung in the air.

Caleb remembered.

Vanessa always forgot things when they made her look bad.

Daniel looked back at the phone.

The recording continued.

Vanessa’s voice came again.

“Once Daniel sees how difficult she is, he’ll understand.””

Caleb’s stomach dropped.

Nia closed her eyes.

“She was planning this.””

Vanessa immediately snapped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Daniel raised his voice.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

He looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Just broken.

“Let me listen.””

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

Vanessa leaned toward the camera.

“I just need one moment where she looks like the problem.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa reached for the phone again.

“Stop this.””

But Daniel stepped away.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I want to hear.””

On the screen, Vanessa continued.

“People believe what they see.””

A pause.

Then:

“All I need is proof.””

The recording ended.

Silence.

No one moved.

Caleb looked at Nia.

She was crying silently.

Not because she was surprised.

Because she wasn’t.

Somewhere inside, she had always known.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Did you record this?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

Everyone looked shocked.

Vanessa took a breath.

“But you don’t understand why.””

Daniel stared.

“Then tell me.””

She looked around the room.

At Caleb.

At Nia.

Then at him.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“I came into this house and tried to help.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“You tried to make my daughter look guilty.””

“No.””

“You collected evidence against her.””

“Because there were problems.””

“You created problems.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You’re really going to believe them?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Vanessa laughed softly.

A bitter sound.

“I can’t believe this.””

Nia looked at her.

“Neither can I.””

Vanessa turned.

“Don’t pretend you’ve won.””

Nia frowned.

“What?””

“You think because you found one recording, everything is over?””

Caleb felt a chill.

Daniel noticed too.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then smiled.

“I mean you still don’t know everything.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What else?””

Vanessa walked toward the table.

She picked up the photograph again.

“You want the truth about Nia?””

Nia stepped back.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“She hasn’t told you what happened the night before your wedding.””

Daniel froze.

Caleb looked between them.

“What?””

Nia’s face went pale.

“Vanessa.””

“What?””

“You know exactly what happened.””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“What is she talking about?””

Nia didn’t answer.

And that scared Caleb.

Because his sister always answered.

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“Tell him.””

Nia looked down.

“I…”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Nia.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“Know what?””

The girl’s eyes filled with tears.

“That I went to Mom’s old house.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“The night before the wedding.””

“Why?””

Nia didn’t speak.

Vanessa answered for her.

“Because she wanted to stop the wedding.””

Caleb’s eyes widened.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Isn’t it?””

Nia shook her head.

“I didn’t want to stop anything.””

“Then why were you there?””

Nia looked at her father.

And for the first time that night…

she looked afraid.

Not afraid of punishment.

Afraid of losing him.

“Because I found something.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Nia wiped her tears.

“Something Mom left behind.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But Caleb saw it.

She knew.

“What did you find?”” Daniel asked.

Nia looked at Vanessa.

Then at her father.

“A letter.””

The room went silent.

“A letter from Mom.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What letter?””

Nia took a shaky breath.

“One that was never supposed to be found.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

But he turned.

“Why?””

Vanessa froze.

“Because…”

Her voice stopped.

And that hesitation said everything.

Daniel looked back at Nia.

“Where is the letter?””

Nia looked toward the staircase.

“I hid it.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Somewhere Vanessa can’t reach.””

Caleb felt a sudden chill.

Because Vanessa didn’t look confused.

She didn’t look surprised.

She looked angry.

And as Daniel turned toward Nia, Vanessa quietly reached into her purse.

Her fingers closed around something hidden inside.

Something Caleb couldn’t see.

May you like

But whatever it was…

made Vanessa smile again.
