Chapter 2: The Evidence in Her Hand

Caleb stared through the narrow opening of his bedroom door, barely breathing.

The object between Vanessa’s fingers caught the hallway light.

His stomach twisted.

It was his blue soccer wristband.

The one Dad had bought him after his first tournament.

The one Caleb never took off unless he was sleeping.

He remembered dropping it earlier that afternoon when he had been running around the living room. He remembered the ball hitting the television stand. He remembered the horrible crack.

And then he remembered running.

Leaving everything behind.

Including the wristband.

Downstairs, Daniel took it from Vanessa’s hand.

“This was next to the television?”” he asked.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Caleb felt his heart sink.

She was lying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

That was the scary part.

Vanessa never needed to raise her voice when she wanted people to believe her.

Daniel turned the wristband over in his fingers.

“Nia,” he said, looking toward the dining room, “do you know anything about this?””

Nia stood frozen beside the wall.

Her eyes moved from the wristband to Caleb’s bedroom door.

For a second, Caleb thought she saw him.

He almost stepped forward.

Almost.

But then Nia looked back at their father.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, Dad. I don’t.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then explain why your brother’s wristband was found beside the broken TV.””

Nia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she didn’t have an explanation.

Because the truth was trapped upstairs behind a scared twelve-year-old boy who refused to speak.

Vanessa placed a gentle hand on Daniel’s arm.

“Maybe we should not make this harder than it already is.””

Nia looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa gave her a sad expression.

“It means I don’t want to believe you did it.””

“I didn’t!””

“Then why was your brother’s wristband there?””

“I don’t know!””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Nia.””

The warning in his voice hurt more than anger would have.

She lowered her eyes.

“I’m telling the truth.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Daniel, she has been struggling since the wedding. I know she misses her mother. I know this has been difficult.””

Nia looked up sharply.

“Don’t talk about my mom.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened for half a second before becoming soft again.

“See?””

Daniel looked between them.

“Nia.””

“She always does this,” Nia whispered.

“Does what?””

“She makes everything about Mom.””

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Caleb pressed his back against the wall.

He wanted to scream.

He wanted to tell them.

But fear kept his mouth shut.

He imagined walking downstairs.

He imagined saying, “I broke it.””

He imagined Dad being disappointed.

But then he imagined something else.

Vanessa finding another way to make everything worse.

And somehow, that scared him more.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I need the truth.””

Nia looked at him.

“I’m giving you the truth.””

“Then where were you?””

“In the basement.””

“For how long?””

“I don’t know. Maybe twenty minutes.””

“And Caleb?””

Nia glanced upstairs.

“He was playing.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Playing what?””

Nia hesitated.

“Soccer.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“Daniel, she is blaming a child who isn’t even here to defend himself.””

Nia turned toward her.

“Because he did it!””

“Nia,” Daniel said sharply.

The girl flinched.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

But her voice had changed.

Something inside her had cracked.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something deeper.

The feeling of realizing nobody was listening.

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“Caleb?””

Caleb froze.

His father called his name again.

“Caleb, come downstairs.””

His hand touched the doorknob.

This was the moment.

The moment he could fix everything.

He could walk downstairs and tell the truth.

His feet moved.

One step.

Then another.

He opened the door.

The hallway floor creaked.

Everyone looked up.

Daniel’s expression softened slightly.

“There you are.””

Caleb stood at the top of the stairs.

His mouth opened.

“I…”

Vanessa watched him carefully.

Not angry.

Not worried.

Waiting.

That was worse.

Caleb swallowed.

“I…”

His voice disappeared.

Daniel walked closer.

“Caleb, did you break the television?””

The question was simple.

But Caleb felt like he was standing in front of a courtroom.

His sister looked at him.

Her eyes were red from crying.

She didn’t say anything.

She didn’t beg.

She just looked tired.

And that made Caleb feel even worse.

Because Nia had always protected him.

When he forgot his lunch, she shared hers.

When he had nightmares, she sat beside him until he fell asleep.

When Dad worked late, she made him dinner even though she was only twelve.

And now she was standing in a corner because of him.

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

She gave him the smallest smile.

A warning.

A promise.

If he spoke, things would change.

Not just for him.

For everyone.

“I…”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth, son.””

Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t mean to.””

Everyone went silent.

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

Caleb looked down.

“I was playing with the ball.””

Nia closed her eyes.

A tiny breath escaped her.

Relief.

Finally.

Finally, he was telling the truth.

But Vanessa moved faster.

“Oh, Caleb.””

Her voice was full of disappointment.

Caleb looked at her.

“What?””

She tilted her head.

“You said you didn’t mean to.””

“Yes.””

“So you did break it.””

Caleb nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Caleb wiped his face with his sleeve.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Caleb looked toward Nia.

Then at Vanessa.

He wanted to say it.

He wanted to say, “Because I knew you would blame her.””

But the words stayed trapped.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel’s disappointment was obvious.

Caleb had expected anger.

But disappointment was worse.

“Go to your room,” Daniel said quietly.

Caleb nodded.

He turned around.

Then stopped.

Because Nia was still standing there.

“Dad…”

Daniel looked at him.

Caleb’s voice shook.

“Nia didn’t do anything.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

Daniel looked at Nia.

Then back at Caleb.

“You’re saying she had nothing to do with this?””

Caleb nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let her take the punishment?””

Caleb’s eyes dropped.

“I was scared.””

Daniel stared at him.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, he is a child. He’s scared because he knows he made a mistake.””

Nia looked at her.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Nia wiped her cheeks.

“No, that’s not why.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?””

Nia stepped away from the wall.

“He’s scared because he knows you’ll make him feel like this.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Nia.””

“She always does this.””

“Nia, stop.””

“She finds someone to blame.””

Vanessa’s face became cold.

“Careful.””

Nia laughed once.

A small, broken sound.

“See? That’s exactly what I mean.””

Daniel looked between them.

“I don’t understand.””

Nia looked at her father.

And Caleb realized something.

She had reached her limit.

“I’m tired, Dad.””

Daniel softened.

“Tired of what?””

“Being the person everyone believes is guilty first.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because maybe, deep down, he knew there was truth in them.

But Vanessa quickly stepped beside him.

“Daniel, I think emotions are running high.””

Nia looked at her.

“Of course you do.””

“Enough.””

“No.””

Nia’s voice shook.

But she kept going.

“I want to know something.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“What?””

“Why did you have Caleb’s wristband?””

The question froze the room.

Caleb looked up.

His eyes widened.

Vanessa’s expression didn’t move.

But only for a second.

Daniel turned.

“What does she mean?””

Nia pointed at the wristband in his hand.

“That was not found beside the TV.””

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“Nia.””

“No. I saw it.””

Everyone stared at her.

Nia continued.

“When I came upstairs from the basement, I saw you standing near the television before I walked into the room.””

Caleb stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa remained calm.

“I was checking the damage.””

“And you found the wristband?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you say that?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But no words came immediately.

For the first time all night, she looked caught off guard.

Caleb felt a tiny spark of hope.

Maybe the truth was finally coming out.

Maybe Dad would see.

Maybe—

Then Vanessa reached into her purse again.

And slowly pulled out her phone.

“I didn’t want to show you this,” she said.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“What is it?””

Vanessa pressed play.

A video appeared.

Caleb recognized the angle immediately.

It was from the small camera in the hallway.

The one Dad installed after a package was stolen months ago.

Caleb watched his own figure appear on the screen.

Running.

Carrying the soccer ball.

Entering the living room.

Then—

The video stopped.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“I think you need to see the rest.””

She pressed the screen.

Caleb’s face went pale.

May you like

Because he knew exactly what she had hidden.

And he knew the missing seconds would change everything.
