Chapter 8: The Video From The Last Day

Nobody moved.

The flash drive sat between Vanessa’s fingers like a weapon.

Not because it was dangerous.

Because everyone in the room knew it contained something that could change everything.

Nia stared at it.

Her face had gone pale.

“My mother left that for you?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A small smile crossed Vanessa’s lips.

“Maybe because she trusted me.””

Nia shook her head slowly.

“No.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“No?””

“My mother didn’t trust you.””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“How do you know?””

“Because Mom was scared of her.””

The words came out quietly.

But they filled the room.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

“It’s the truth.””

“Based on what?””

Nia looked at the flash drive.

“Based on the fact that you’re the only person who benefits from everyone believing she was unstable.””

The room fell silent.

Caleb watched Vanessa carefully.

He had spent so long thinking adults always knew what they were doing.

But now he was realizing something.

Adults could lie too.

Sometimes better than children.

Daniel held out his hand.

“Give me the drive.””

Vanessa didn’t move.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“You may not like what you see.””

Daniel’s eyes remained fixed on her.

“I’ve spent a year believing things that weren’t true.””

He stepped closer.

“I’m done guessing.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked like she might refuse.

Then she placed the flash drive in his palm.

“Fine.””

Daniel walked to the old desk in the corner.

It was the only piece of furniture left from Nia’s old room.

He opened his laptop.

Everyone gathered around.

Nobody spoke.

The drive appeared on the screen.

One video file.

No name.

No date.

Just a single recording.

Daniel clicked it.

The screen went black.

Then a familiar face appeared.

Nia gasped.

“Mom.””

Caleb had only been nine when their mother died.

The memory of her face had started fading around the edges.

But seeing her again felt like opening a door to a room he thought was gone forever.

Their mother sat at a desk.

Her hair was pulled back.

Her eyes looked tired.

But she was smiling.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

Caleb felt his chest tighten.

She was talking to his father.

“If you’re watching this, something has happened.””

Daniel froze.

Nia covered her mouth.

Their mother continued.

“I hope I’m wrong.””

She looked down for a moment.

Then back at the camera.

“I hope this is just my fear making me suspicious.””

The video paused briefly.

A tear slipped down Nia’s cheek.

Their mother continued.

“But if I’m right, Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””

Daniel leaned closer.

Vanessa stood behind them.

Silent.

Their mother took a breath.

“I know you love people deeply. That is one of the things I’ve always loved about you.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“But sometimes you want to believe the best in people so badly that you ignore the signs when they hurt you.””

Nobody looked at Vanessa.

They didn’t need to.

Everyone knew.

Their mother continued.

“I need to tell you something about Vanessa.””

The room became completely still.

Caleb looked at her.

Vanessa’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

“I met Vanessa six months before you introduced her to us.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“What?””

Nia looked confused.

“What?””

Their mother continued.

“She came to my office.””

The video showed their mother folding her hands.

“She said she wanted to help me.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Help you?””

Their mother nodded.

“She knew about my illness.””

Nia whispered:

“How?””

No one answered.

“She knew details I never told her.””

A chill moved through the room.

Their mother continued.

“At first, I thought she was just kind.””

She paused.

“But then I noticed something.””

The video flickered slightly.

“Every time Vanessa visited, she asked questions.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What questions?””

Their mother looked directly into the camera.

“About my finances.””

Silence.

Caleb looked at Daniel.

His father’s face had changed.

Their mother continued.

“She wanted to know what would happen if I passed away.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Turn this off.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“No.””

“Daniel, this is manipulation.””

He looked at her.

“From who?””

Vanessa stopped.

The question hurt.

Because he already knew.

The video continued.

“I didn’t tell Daniel at first.””

Their mother looked down.

“I didn’t want him to think I was jealous or afraid of being replaced.””

Nia closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

“She knew,” she whispered.

Caleb looked at her.

“What?””

“She knew Dad would think that.””

Their mother continued.

“But then Vanessa started spending more time around the children.””

The screen showed her expression changing.

“That’s when I became worried.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

“Why?””

Their mother answered:

“Because she was not trying to become part of our family.””

A pause.

“She was trying to replace someone.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Keep watching.””

Her smile disappeared.

The video continued.

“She told Nia things she should never have told a child.””

Nia looked down.

“She told her that families change.””

A pause.

“That mothers get replaced.””

Caleb felt anger rise.

His sister had been carrying this alone.

For months.

Years.

Their mother continued.

“I confronted her.””

Daniel whispered.

“When?””

The video answered.

“The day before my final hospital visit.””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Their mother continued.

“She became angry.””

The screen shook slightly.

“She told me I was making Daniel choose between his past and his future.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The words hit him.

Because they sounded exactly like something Vanessa would say.

Then their mother looked directly at the camera.

“And that was when I understood.””

A pause.

“Vanessa wasn’t afraid of losing this family.””

Her voice became softer.

“She was afraid I would expose her.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Daniel didn’t move.

The video continued.

“I made a copy of important documents.””

Their mother looked down.

“I hid them somewhere only Daniel would think to look.””

Nia frowned.

“Documents?””

Their mother continued.

“Proof of what Vanessa had been doing.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

“What?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

The video continued.

“She has been trying to convince people I’m unstable.””

Their mother’s voice shook.

“She has been collecting information, changing stories, and creating situations where Nia looks responsible.””

Caleb looked at his sister.

The broken TV.

The missing letter.

The accusations.

Everything.

Their mother had known.

She had seen it.

The video suddenly became darker.

Their mother leaned closer.

“If you are watching this, Daniel, please do not confront her without understanding everything.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?””

The answer came immediately.

“Because Vanessa never acts without a backup plan.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t smile anymore.

Their mother continued.

“She keeps copies.””

A pause.

“She records conversations.””

Another pause.

“She saves evidence.””

Caleb felt cold.

Because it was exactly what Vanessa had done.

Their mother looked down.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

Nia covered her face.

Daniel looked broken.

Then their mother said the words that changed everything.

“The most important thing is this.””

She reached off-camera.

Picked up a small envelope.

And held it toward the camera.

“The original documents are not hidden in the house.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She had whispered it.

But everyone heard.

Daniel looked at her.

“How do you know what she was going to say?””

Vanessa said nothing.

The video continued.

Their mother opened the envelope.

“The proof is with someone I trust.””

She looked directly at the camera.

“Someone Vanessa doesn’t know exists.””

The recording ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“What proof?””

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

“I…”

She stopped.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“What proof did she leave?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Then Caleb noticed something.

Her hand.

She was gripping her purse.

The same purse she had been reaching into all night.

Nia noticed too.

“Dad.””

Everyone looked.

Nia pointed.

“She has something else.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

Slowly…

very slowly…

Vanessa opened her purse.

And pulled out a second flash drive.

But this one was labeled with a name.

A name that made Nia’s entire body freeze.

May you like

Because it was written in her mother’s handwriting.

*“For Nia.””*
