Chapter 3: The Missing Seconds

The video froze on the screen.

Caleb stared at the phone in Vanessa’s hand.

His heartbeat became louder than everything else.

The hallway camera had caught him.

There was no escaping that.

He knew what everyone had seen.

A twelve-year-old boy running through the house with a soccer ball.

A twelve-year-old boy entering the living room.

A twelve-year-old boy standing exactly where the broken television was found.

But there was something nobody knew.

Something Vanessa had removed.

The moment after.

The moment that explained everything.

“Play it,” Daniel said quietly.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You’re sure?””

Daniel’s eyes remained fixed on the phone.

“Yes.””

Vanessa tapped the screen.

The video started again.

The image was grainy but clear enough.

Caleb appeared in the hallway.

He looked happy.

Carefree.

He bounced the ball once.

Twice.

Then he kicked it.

The ball flew forward.

A loud crash followed.

The screen shook.

The television went dark.

Caleb on the video froze.

Just like he had in real life.

Then he looked around.

And ran.

The clip ended.

Silence filled the room.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Caleb felt tears burning behind his eyes.

He knew how it looked.

He knew what his father saw.

A mistake.

A lie.

A child who ran away instead of admitting what he had done.

“Caleb,” Daniel said.

His voice wasn’t angry.

That almost hurt more.

“Why did you run?””

Caleb stared at the floor.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of me?””

Caleb didn’t answer.

Daniel took a step closer.

“Son.””

Caleb swallowed.

“I didn’t want you to be mad.””

Daniel looked away for a moment.

The answer clearly hurt him.

Meanwhile, Nia stood quietly near the dining room table.

She looked exhausted.

Not relieved.

Not happy.

Just tired.

Because even though Caleb admitted what happened, something still felt wrong.

Vanessa slipped her phone back into her purse.

“Daniel, I think we all understand what happened.””

Nia looked at her.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa’s eyebrows lifted.

“No?””

Nia shook her head.

“You showed the video.””

“Yes.””

“But not all of it.””

A pause.

Caleb looked at his sister.

“What do you mean?””

Nia looked at him.

“I mean she stopped it.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Nia, don’t start creating another story.””

“I’m not.””

“You always look for someone else to blame.””

Nia’s hands curled into fists.

“I’m looking for the truth.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Nia, what are you saying?””

She looked at the camera on the wall.

Then at Vanessa.

“I’m saying the video doesn’t end there.””

Vanessa’s expression remained calm.

But Caleb noticed something.

A tiny movement.

A quick glance toward the camera.

Then away.

He had seen that look before.

The look Vanessa gave when she was hiding something.

Daniel noticed too.

“Vanessa?””

She sighed.

“I stopped the video because I didn’t want to embarrass Caleb further.””

Caleb looked up.

“What?””

“You ran away.””

Her voice softened.

“I thought showing everyone that was enough.””

Nia shook her head.

“That’s not why.””

“Then why?””

“Because after the TV broke, you walked into the living room.””

The room became still.

Caleb frowned.

“What?””

Nia looked at him.

“I saw her.””

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“You were there?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I went in after hearing the crash.””

“But before me.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Are you accusing me?””

Nia didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Vanessa, were you there before Nia came in?””

A few seconds passed.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“Why didn’t you say that?”” Daniel asked.

“Because it wasn’t important.””

Nia immediately shook her head.

“It was.””

“Why?””

“Because you had his wristband.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

Daniel looked at the object still sitting on the table.

“Explain.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“I found it.””

“After the crash?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Near the television.””

Nia stepped forward.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No?””

“I dropped my towel basket when I came in. I saw the floor.””

Nia pointed toward the broken television.

“The wristband wasn’t there.””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because I looked.””

The certainty in her voice surprised him.

Nia continued.

“I thought the TV might fall on someone. I checked around it.””

Caleb listened carefully.

He remembered that moment.

He had been upstairs.

But Nia had always been like that.

Always looking after people.

Even when nobody looked after her.

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“So now you expect everyone to believe your memory over evidence?””

Nia looked at her.

“I expect Dad to ask questions.””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he turned to Vanessa.

“What happened after the crash?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Caleb watched her.

The pause felt too long.

“I walked in.””

“And?””

“I saw the television.””

“And?””

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“Daniel.””

“Please answer.””

Her expression changed.

“I picked up the wristband.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew Caleb would lose it.””

“That’s all?””

“Yes.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

But he didn’t look convinced.

Caleb’s hands tightened.

He had never seen his father question Vanessa like this before.

Usually, Vanessa’s version became the truth before anyone else spoke.

Then Daniel looked at Caleb.

“Son.””

Caleb looked up.

“Did Vanessa ever talk to you about Nia?””

The question confused him.

“What?””

“Did she ever say anything about your sister?””

Caleb hesitated.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, what kind of question is that?””

“A simple one.””

Caleb looked between them.

Memories surfaced.

Small moments.

Tiny comments.

Things he had ignored.

When Nia broke a glass accidentally, Vanessa had whispered, “Your sister always causes trouble.””

When Nia cried after finding her mother’s old necklace missing, Vanessa had said, “Maybe she should be more responsible.””

When Caleb complained that Nia was bossy, Vanessa had smiled and said, “Sometimes people who are replaced become bitter.””

At the time, Caleb hadn’t understood.

Now he did.

“I…”

His voice shook.

Daniel waited.

“Caleb?””

The boy looked down.

“She says things sometimes.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What things?””

Caleb immediately regretted speaking.

“She just…”

“Tell me.””

Caleb looked at Nia.

His sister didn’t say anything.

But she nodded slightly.

It was okay.

“She says Nia is angry because she misses Mom.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel’s face changed.

Vanessa looked at Caleb.

“I said that because I was trying to help you understand her.””

“No.””

The word came from Caleb.

Everyone looked at him.

He had never spoken back to Vanessa before.

But now he couldn’t stop.

“You said she was the reason everyone was sad.””

Vanessa stared.

“When did I say that?””

Caleb swallowed.

“Last month.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Last month?””

Caleb nodded.

“She said if Nia stopped fighting the family would be happier.””

Nia looked away.

Her eyes filled again.

But this time, they weren’t tears of being accused.

They were tears of finally being believed.

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“Daniel, he’s a child. He misunderstands things.””

Caleb looked at her.

“No, I don’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel walked toward the hallway camera.

He looked at it for a long moment.

Then he turned around.

“Show me the full video.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“It was deleted.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“The recording stopped.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Nia whispered.

“I do.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward Vanessa’s purse.

“Because she has the backup.””

Vanessa’s face went completely still.

Daniel stared.

“Backup?””

For the first time that night, Vanessa looked nervous.

Only for a second.

But Caleb saw it.

And so did his father.

Daniel held out his hand.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t move.

“Give me your phone.””

The room became silent.

Then Vanessa slowly smiled.

A cold, controlled smile.

“You really think I’m the problem here?””

Daniel said nothing.

She reached into her purse.

But instead of handing over her phone, she pulled out another item.

A small envelope.

She placed it on the table.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to show you this.””

Daniel looked at it.

“What is that?””

Vanessa pushed it toward him.

“It’s proof that Nia has been lying to you for months.””

Nia’s face went pale.

Caleb stared at the envelope.

Because he knew something was wrong.

Vanessa didn’t look scared anymore.

She looked prepared.

Daniel opened the envelope.

And the first thing he pulled out was a photograph.

A photograph that made his entire expression change.

May you like

Because in the picture was Nia…

standing beside something she had sworn she had never touched.
