Chapter 7: The Letter She Never Wanted Found

The broken seal stared back at Daniel.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Caleb watched his father’s face carefully.

He had seen Daniel angry.

He had seen him tired.

He had seen him disappointed.

But he had never seen him look betrayed.

Not until now.

“Who opened this?”” Daniel asked.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Vanessa held the envelope loosely in her hand.

“I don’t know.””

Nia looked at her in disbelief.

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa turned.

“Excuse me?””

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

“And you opened it.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Caleb noticed.

So did Daniel.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“You knew this existed.””

“I told you. I found it.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

“The day after I moved in.””

Daniel stared.

“That was over a year ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s what I thought.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Give it to him.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

Nia’s voice shook, but she didn’t step back.

“You don’t get to threaten people anymore.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Threaten?””

“You knew about this letter and kept it hidden.””

“I was protecting him.””

“From what?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“From pain.””

Nia laughed quietly.

A sad, bitter sound.

“You mean from the truth.””

Daniel reached out his hand.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t move.

“Nobody knows what’s inside.””

“Then why hide it?””

“I didn’t hide it.””

“Then why was it in a locked cabinet?””

Silence.

That was the first time Vanessa had no answer.

Slowly, she placed the envelope in his hand.

Daniel looked down at it.

His fingers trembled slightly.

Caleb noticed.

His father was scared.

Not of the letter.

Of what it might say.

Because everyone had something they feared hearing.

Daniel carefully opened it.

The paper inside was old.

Folded neatly.

The handwriting was familiar.

Even Caleb recognized it.

Mom’s handwriting.

Daniel’s breathing changed.

He sat down on the edge of the old bed.

Nobody spoke.

Then he began reading.

At first, his eyes moved silently.

Then his expression changed.

Confusion.

Pain.

Shock.

Nia watched him.

“What does it say?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“Dad?””

He looked up.

And Caleb immediately knew.

Whatever was written there had changed something.

Because Daniel looked at Nia differently.

Not with suspicion.

With regret.

“Your mother wrote this the week before she died.””

Nia froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked back at the paper.

“She knew something was wrong.””

Vanessa shifted.

“Daniel.””

He ignored her.

“She wrote that she had been worried about someone.””

The room went silent.

Caleb felt his stomach tighten.

“Who?”” Nia whispered.

Daniel kept reading.

Then he stopped.

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Nobody missed it.

Nia looked at her.

“No.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Daniel stood.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa stared.

“Tell you what?””

“That you knew about the letter.””

“I told you.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You told me you found a box.””

Daniel held up the letter.

“You never told me you opened it.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

A tiny crack.

“I didn’t.””

Daniel looked down.

“Then explain this.””

He turned the letter around.

At the bottom of the page was a sentence.

Underlined.

A sentence written by Mom.

*“Daniel, if you are reading this, please ask Vanessa why she was in my office.””*

Everyone went still.

Caleb felt a chill.

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel stared.

“My office?””

Vanessa’s face became defensive.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

“Then explain.””

“I can’t believe you’re doing this.””

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked around.

At Caleb.

At Nia.

Then back at Daniel.

“She was paranoid.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“Don’t talk about her like that.””

“I’m saying your mother misunderstood things.””

Daniel looked down at the letter again.

“What did she misunderstand?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I was helping her.””

“With what?””

“She was struggling.””

Nia stepped forward.

“My mother was sick.””

“Yes.””

“And you used that.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“No.””

Nia’s voice grew stronger.

“But she did.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What happened in your office?””

Vanessa was silent.

Caleb watched her carefully.

The woman who always had an answer.

The woman who always controlled the story.

Was suddenly searching for one.

Finally, she spoke.

“Your wife asked me to help organize documents.””

Daniel frowned.

“Documents?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew she was getting worse.””

Nia shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

“I knew Mom.””

“And I knew her too.””

“No.””

Nia’s voice cracked.

“You knew how to make her feel weak.””

The words landed hard.

Daniel looked at Nia.

“What are you saying?””

Nia looked at the letter.

“I think Mom was trying to warn you.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Let her speak.””

Vanessa stopped.

Nia took a shaky breath.

“Mom trusted people too easily.””

Caleb watched her.

“She always believed everyone had a good reason for what they did.””

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Even when they didn’t.””

Daniel looked down.

The room was silent.

Then he asked:

“What else does the letter say?””

He unfolded the page completely.

His eyes moved faster.

Then he stopped again.

“What?””

Nia asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“She wrote about the night before the wedding.””

Nia froze.

Caleb looked at his sister.

The secret.

The one Vanessa had mentioned.

Daniel continued reading.

“She said she was afraid you would find out.””

Nia’s face went pale.

“Find out what?””

Daniel looked at her.

The question was filled with pain.

“Nia…”

She swallowed.

“What?””

He looked back at the letter.

“She wrote that she saw you leaving the house.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“I told you.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You never told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The morning after.””

“Why didn’t I hear?””

Nia looked down.

“Because Vanessa interrupted.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

Nia looked at Daniel.

“I came to your office.””

Daniel’s expression shifted.

“I remember.””

“You were with her.””

Vanessa remained silent.

“I heard you talking.””

Daniel frowned.

“About what?””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“She told you I was acting out because I wanted attention.””

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“Did you say that?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I said she was emotional.””

“You made him think I was the problem.””

“Nia.””

“No.””

The girl’s voice broke.

“I wanted to show you the letter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But you didn’t.””

“Because when I came back later, it was gone.””

The room went completely silent.

Caleb felt his heart pound.

The missing letter.

The broken seal.

The hidden box.

Everything connected.

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“You took it.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Absolutely not.””

“You knew where it was.””

“I found it.””

“You opened it.””

“No.””

“Then why does my wife mention you by name?””

Vanessa’s silence was answer enough.

Daniel stepped back.

For the first time, Caleb saw something he never expected.

His father was afraid of his own wife.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because he realized the person he trusted had been controlling pieces of the truth.

Vanessa looked around the room.

Then suddenly laughed.

Everyone stared.

“You really think this is enough?””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“You think one letter makes me the villain?””

Nia looked at her.

“You did that yourself.””

Vanessa ignored her.

She walked toward the door.

“You want the full truth?””

Daniel watched her.

“Yes.””

Vanessa stopped.

Then slowly turned around.

“Fine.””

She reached into her purse again.

This time she pulled out a small flash drive.

Caleb’s stomach dropped.

“What is that?””

Vanessa smiled.

“The rest of the story.””

Daniel stared.

“What’s on it?””

Vanessa looked directly at Nia.

“A video your mother recorded the day before she died.””

Nia went completely still.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Why do you have that?””

Vanessa’s smile faded into something colder.

“Because your first wife left it for me.””

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa added quietly:

“And because if you watch it…”

May you like

She looked at Nia.

“You’ll finally understand why your mother was afraid of you.””
