Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Daniel dropped the phone.

It hit the grass beside the old garden bench.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible had just become real.

The man on the screen was supposed to be dead.

Daniel’s father had been buried eight years ago.

There had been a funeral.

There had been photographs.

There had been condolences from friends and family.

There had been a grave.

But there he was.

Standing behind Ava.

Alive.

“Daniel…”

I reached for his arm.

He didn’t react.

His eyes stayed fixed on the phone.

“My father.””

The words came out like he couldn’t believe he was saying them.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I swear to you, I didn’t know.””

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

She looked broken.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

His voice rose.

“My daughter is being held by a man who has been dead for eight years.””

“I didn’t know he was alive!””

“Then who did?””

Vanessa had no answer.

And that silence was terrifying.

Daniel picked up the phone.

The video was still running.

His father was standing behind Ava.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

“Where are you?”” Daniel shouted.

His father looked into the camera.

Then smiled.

A smile Daniel clearly remembered.

A smile that once meant safety.

Now it meant danger.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Daniel’s hands tightened around the phone.

“Let her go.””

His father sighed.

“You always were impatient.””

“You took my daughter.””

“I protected her.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You kidnapped her.””

“No.””

His father looked at Ava.

“I removed her from people who were using her.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“What does he mean?””

His father continued.

“Ask Vanessa about the money.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“We know about the money.””

“No.””

The older man shook his head.

“You know she stole.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“But you don’t know why.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

No answer.

“Why?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Because I was trying to fix what your father did.””

Daniel turned back to the phone.

His father smiled.

“There it is.””

“What did you do?””

The older man leaned closer to the camera.

“I protected this family.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You destroyed it.””

His father’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The confidence disappeared for a second.

“I made sacrifices.””

“You poisoned my mother.””

Silence.

Even Vanessa looked shocked hearing Daniel say it directly.

His father didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

Instead, he said:

“Your mother was going to ruin everything.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What?””

“She thought money could solve everything.””

“You killed her.””

“I prevented a disaster.””

My stomach turned.

Daniel looked like he had been punched.

“My own father.””

His father ignored him.

“Your mother wanted to give control to Ava.””

“Yes.””

“She didn’t understand the consequences.””

“She was protecting my daughter.””

“She was protecting a child who couldn’t understand what she was inheriting.””

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

“You mean you wanted the money.””

His father smiled.

“I wanted control.””

The honesty was horrifying.

No excuses.

No shame.

Just the truth.

“You stole from Ava,” Daniel said.

“No.””

His father shook his head.

“I borrowed.””

“Borrowed?””

“I intended to return it.””

“You’re insane.””

His father’s expression hardened.

“Watch your words.””

Daniel stared.

“You threatened your own granddaughter.””

Ava’s voice suddenly came from the video.

“Dad.””

Everyone went still.

Daniel immediately focused.

“Ava?””

She looked at the camera.

“I’m okay.””

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I found something.””

Her grandfather looked annoyed.

“That’s enough.””

Ava looked away from him.

“No.””

The confidence in her voice surprised me.

Even Daniel noticed.

“What did you find, sweetheart?””

She looked directly at the camera.

“Grandma’s recording.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“The one she made before she died.””

His father’s face changed.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Ava looked down.

“I do.””

Daniel stared.

“How?””

Ava answered quietly.

“Because he showed me the room.””

The room.

The words felt strange.

Like there was another piece of the story we didn’t know.

Daniel’s father looked angry now.

“Give me that.””

The camera moved.

Ava stepped back.

And then she shouted:

“Dad!””

The video shook.

Daniel panicked.

“Ava!””

Then the screen went black.

The call ended.

Daniel immediately called back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You knew about the recording.””

She shook her head.

“I knew your mother made one.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

For the first time, I saw him break.

Not completely.

But enough.

I took his hand.

“We find Ava.””

He nodded.

Because that was the only thing that mattered.

Vanessa looked at the documents on the bench.

Then suddenly she gasped.

“What?””

She picked up one paper.

“This.””

Daniel took it.

“What is it?””

Vanessa pointed.

“The location.””

He looked confused.

“What location?””

“Your mother’s safe deposit box.””

Daniel frowned.

“We already found the garden box.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This isn’t the safe.””

She pointed at the document.

“This is where she kept the original evidence.””

I looked closer.

A bank name.

A number.

And a handwritten note.

Daniel read it.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He whispered:

“She knew.””

“Who?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She knew my father would come after the evidence.””

A cold silence followed.

The note had been written by Daniel’s mother.

And underneath the account information were seven words:

*Trust no one who wants the money.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

Then at the empty road beyond the garden.

His entire family had been built on secrets.

But now he finally had a direction.

“The bank.””

Vanessa nodded.

“But there’s a problem.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The account needs two people.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at the paper.

Then whispered:

“Your mother and her chosen guardian.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“But my mother is dead.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“That’s why nobody could access it.””

I looked at the document.

“Then how do we open it?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Like she remembered something.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“There was one person your mother trusted after everything happened.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And then at the signature on the paper.

A signature Daniel hadn’t noticed before.

A name written at the bottom.

His mother’s final witness.

Daniel read it.

Then he went completely still.

Because the person who could unlock the truth…

Was someone none of us expected.

Someone who had been close to the family all along.

His own wife.

Me.

I stared at the signature.

“My name?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother added you.””

Daniel looked at me.

“But why?””

I had no answer.

I had never met Daniel’s mother well enough for that.

I never knew she had trusted me with anything.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

And my blood froze.

*You want Ava back? Come alone.*

Below it was another line.

*Bring the letter your mother-in-law left for you.*

I looked up.

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly I understood.

Ava wasn’t taken because she was the heir.

She wasn’t taken because of the money.

She was taken because someone believed I had the final piece of the truth.

May you like

And whoever sent that message…

knew exactly what Daniel’s mother had hidden from all of us.
