Chapter 5: The Heir Nobody Knew About

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice was barely above a whisper.

The entire room seemed to wait for the answer.

Even Vanessa stopped crying.

The man on the phone didn’t rush.

He let the silence stretch.

Like he knew the truth would hurt more if it arrived slowly.

Then he said:

“Your daughter.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel’s face went completely blank.

“What?””

The man repeated himself.

“Your mother changed the will. The inheritance wasn’t meant for you.””

He paused.

“It was meant for Ava.””

The phone slipped slightly in Daniel’s hand.

I reached for the edge of the table to steady myself.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Ava.

My daughter.

The little girl who had been crying over twenty dollars an hour earlier.

The little girl Vanessa had stolen from.

The little girl everyone thought was just a child caught in someone else’s problems.

She was the person at the center of everything.

“That’s impossible,” Daniel said.

The man on the phone gave a quiet laugh.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“You never knew because Vanessa made sure you didn’t.””

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“Is this true?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Is this true?””

She covered her face.

“I didn’t want this.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I didn’t want anyone to know.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

Daniel stared.

“You keep saying that.””

“I thought I could protect everyone.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You protected yourself.””

Vanessa flinched.

The man on the phone spoke again.

“She found out about the updated will before anyone else.””

Daniel looked back at the phone.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

“Ask Vanessa where the original documents are.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Where are they?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Stop lying.””

“I’m not!””

The fear in her voice was real.

But I no longer knew if that made me trust her less or more.

Because Vanessa had spent years hiding behind half-truths.

Daniel ended the call.

The second he did, Vanessa sank onto the couch.

“She really changed it,” she whispered.

Daniel stared.

“My mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward the staircase.

Toward Ava’s room.

“She loved her.””

Daniel looked confused.

“She barely knew Ava.””

“She knew enough.””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother saw things other people didn’t.””

I frowned.

“What things?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She saw how people treated Ava.””

The words surprised me.

Because for the first time, Vanessa was saying something that sounded almost honest.

“She knew Ava was special,” Vanessa continued.

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother died before Ava was old enough to understand anything.””

“She understood more than you think.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Thinking about my daughter.

The way she saved every dollar.

The way she apologized when other people hurt her.

The way she always tried to make everyone happy.

Daniel sat down slowly.

“My mother left everything to Ava?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Not everything.””

“Then what?””

“A trust.””

“How much?””

Vanessa looked away.

“A lot.””

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Enough that your daughter would never have to worry about money.””

The irony almost made me sick.

Because Ava had spent weeks worrying about twenty dollars.

And the person who was supposed to protect her had taken it.

Daniel stood suddenly.

“Where are the documents?””

“I told you. I don’t know.””

“Then why did you hide them?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“My son.””

Daniel went quiet.

The room changed.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa squeezed her hands together.

“When he found out about the trust, he thought it was his chance.””

“Your son knew about Ava?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He saw the paperwork.””

“And you let him?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“He found it.””

Daniel stared at her.

“So your son knew my daughter was the heir.””

“Yes.””

“And then money started disappearing.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

The pieces were finally connecting.

The missing money.

The secret transfers.

The strange phone calls.

But there was still one thing I didn’t understand.

“Why would your son need Ava’s money if the trust existed?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because the trust was protected.””

“What does that mean?””

“It couldn’t just be taken.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why steal from her account?””

“Because he needed time.””

“For what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“For what?””

She whispered:

“To get control of the trust.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“By becoming her legal guardian.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You’re saying someone was trying to take my daughter?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Daniel did.

His face had turned pale.

“Who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“My son.””

I felt anger rise so quickly I could barely breathe.

“You let this happen?””

“No.””

“You knew?””

“I tried to stop him.””

“By stealing from Ava?””

“I was trying to pay him off.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You paid him to leave my daughter alone?””

Vanessa cried.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

“You should have told us.””

“I was ashamed.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were scared.””

She didn’t deny it.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

All of us froze.

I looked toward the staircase.

“Ava?””

No answer.

My heart dropped.

I ran upstairs.

Her bedroom door was slightly open.

“Ava?””

I pushed it open.

She wasn’t there.

The window was closed.

Her backpack was gone.

My stomach turned.

“Daniel!””

He rushed upstairs.

“What happened?””

“She’s gone.””

His face changed instantly.

“What?””

I pointed.

“Her backpack.””

Daniel ran to the window.

Then he stopped.

Something was sitting on Ava’s bed.

A small white envelope.

My hands started shaking.

Daniel picked it up.

“Don’t open it,” Vanessa said behind us.

We turned.

She was standing in the doorway.

Her face had no color.

“You know what it is,” Daniel said.

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

She looked at the envelope.

Then at us.

“That’s the first warning.””

My heart pounded.

“Warning from who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel opened the envelope anyway.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three words written in black ink.

*I HAVE HER.*

My knees nearly gave out.

Daniel grabbed the paper.

Then his phone rang.

The same unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Confident.

“You have something I want.””

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“If you touched her—”

The man interrupted.

“I didn’t take Ava because of money.””

A pause.

“I took her because she’s the only person who can unlock the trust.””

Daniel went silent.

Then the man said the words that made Vanessa collapse.

“And Vanessa knows exactly why.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What does he mean?””

She didn’t answer.

She was staring at the paper.

At the words.

At the threat.

Then she whispered:

“Because the trust wasn’t the only thing your mother left behind.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What else?””

Vanessa looked up.

And her next words revealed the secret she had been hiding from everyone.

“Your mother left Ava a letter.””

A pause.

“A letter that was never supposed to be opened until she turned eighteen.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

May you like

“Your brother has it.””

And then the front door downstairs slowly opened.
