Chapter 4: The Secret In The Will
Daniel stared at the message on his phone.
For several seconds, he didn’t blink.
He didn’t speak.
He just stood there, reading the same sentence over and over again.
*Ask Vanessa why she changed the will.*
The room felt like it had lost all oxygen.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does it mean?””
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed locked on Vanessa.
And for the first time since I had met him, I saw something I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Betrayal.
Deep, painful betrayal.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly.
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was different now.
Cold.
Controlled.
“Don’t say my name like you don’t know what this is about.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel laughed softly, but there was no humor in it.
“That’s what I thought.””
Ava was standing beside me, watching everything.
She didn’t understand all of it.
How could she?
She was ten years old.
She only understood that adults were angry.
That money had disappeared.
That someone she trusted had hurt her.
I touched her shoulder.
“Sweetheart, why don’t you go upstairs for a little bit?””
She looked at me.
“Are you and Dad going to fight?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Is she leaving?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence told her more than words could.
Ava slowly walked upstairs.
I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.
Then I turned back.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa sat down.
Her confidence was gone.
The woman who used to walk into rooms like she owned them was now sitting with trembling hands.
“I didn’t change the will.””
Daniel stared at her.
“The message says you did.””
“The message is from someone who wants to hurt me.””
“Why would someone say that?””
She looked at him.
“Because they know about it.””
“About what?””
Vanessa looked down.
“The inheritance.””
Daniel took a step closer.
“My mother’s inheritance?””
She nodded.
A strange silence followed.
Because Daniel’s mother had passed away six years earlier.
She had been one of the strongest people I had ever met.
Even during the short time I knew her, she made everyone feel loved.
After she died, Daniel told me his mother had left him something.
Not a huge fortune.
Just enough to help him buy our first home and secure our future.
He always spoke about it with gratitude.
“She wanted me to have stability,” he once told me.
Now I watched his face as that memory shattered.
“You told me my mother left everything to me.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She did.””
“Then why is someone saying you changed the will?””
“I didn’t change it.””
“Then what happened?””
She closed her eyes.
“I helped.””
Those two words made the room colder.
Daniel stared at her.
“Helped with what?””
Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.
“The paperwork.””
“The paperwork?””
“Yes.””
“So you handled my mother’s estate?””
“Some of it.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because she trusted me.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“My mother trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“And you betrayed her?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too desperately.
Daniel noticed.
“Then tell me what you did.””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
Toward where Ava was.
Then back at us.
“I didn’t know it would become this.””
I crossed my arms.
“That’s not an explanation.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No, I understand perfectly.””
“You think I’m just some thief who took money from a child.””
“You did.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to fix something.””
Daniel shook his head.
“By stealing?””
“I was desperate.””
“That doesn’t answer anything.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I made a deal.””
Daniel froze.
“With who?””
She didn’t respond.
“With who?””
“The person who called.””
My stomach tightened.
The unknown caller.
The person who knew about Ava.
The person Vanessa feared.
“What kind of deal?”” I asked.
Vanessa rubbed her hands together.
“Years ago, when your mother was sick, there were changes she wanted made.””
Daniel frowned.
“What changes?””
“She wanted to update certain things.””
“Like what?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Your inheritance.””
Daniel went still.
“What about it?””
“She wanted to add someone.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked away.
“My son.””
The room exploded into silence.
Daniel stared at her.
“My mother wanted to leave money to your son?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“She helped him when he was younger.””
“I never knew that.””
“Because she didn’t tell you.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“And you did?””
“I found the documents.””
“What documents?””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“The original changes.””
I felt a chill.
“So what happened?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“I was supposed to deliver them.””
“But?””
She closed her eyes.
“But I didn’t.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Why?””
“Because my son was in trouble.””
There it was again.
The same excuse.
The same person at the center of everything.
Her son.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You destroyed the documents?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I hid them.””
The confession landed like a stone.
“You hid my mother’s final wishes?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“How?””
“I thought I could replace the money later.””
Daniel looked disgusted.
“And then you started taking from Ava.””
Vanessa’s silence was enough.
I felt anger rising in my chest.
“You used my daughter because you couldn’t solve your own problem.””
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say you didn’t mean it.””
Vanessa looked down.
Daniel walked away from her.
He looked like he was trying to process years of memories.
Every conversation with his mother.
Every decision after her death.
Every time he trusted Vanessa.
Then suddenly, his phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from the same number.
Daniel opened it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
He handed me the phone.
The message was short.
*The documents are not missing. Vanessa gave them to someone else.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying now.
“Who?”” Daniel asked.
She wiped her face.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“You don’t know who has my mother’s will?””
“I swear.””
“Then why did the message say you gave them away?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because she couldn’t.
Daniel looked at the transaction history again.
The payments.
The transfers.
The names.
Then he suddenly stopped.
“What?””
He zoomed in on one of the older payments.
His face went pale.
“No…”
“What is it?”” I asked.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You didn’t just send money to my brother.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“What?””
“You sent money to him because he helped you hide the documents.””
Her face went blank.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Didn’t you?””
“I…”
“Didn’t you?””
Vanessa started crying.
And then she whispered:
“He said he could make the problem disappear.””
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“My brother.””
The betrayal was visible on his face.
Then his phone rang.
Not an unknown number this time.
A name appeared on the screen.
A name that made Vanessa immediately stand.
“Don’t answer.””
Daniel looked at the caller ID.
Then at her.
“Why?””
She grabbed his arm.
“Because he knows we found out.””
Daniel pulled away.
“Who?””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
And before she could stop herself, she whispered:
“Your brother.””
The phone continued ringing.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he pressed answer.
“Where are the documents?””
A long pause.
Then a man’s voice responded.
“Daniel…”
The voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
But the next sentence destroyed everything.
“You should ask your wife why she thinks she’s the only one who changed that will.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“My wife?””
The man laughed quietly.
“No.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Ask her why she never told you your mother changed it again.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa whispered something that made my heart stop.
Because she wasn’t denying it.
She was afraid.
And the man on the phone continued:
“Your mother didn’t leave the inheritance to your family.””
A pause.
“She left it to someone else.””
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
May you like
The man answered.
And the name he said next changed everything.
