Chapter 8: The Person Who Signed The Lie
The call ended.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Daniel held the phone against his ear for several seconds after Ava was gone.
Like if he stayed frozen long enough, her last words might change.
But they didn’t.
*The person who raised me changed the will.*
Everyone in the garden understood what that meant.
Everyone except Daniel.
Or maybe he understood too well.
Slowly, he lowered the phone.
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She didn’t run.
She didn’t deny it.
She just stood there beside the old garden bench, staring at the ground.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips trembled.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me she was wrong.””
She looked up.
And that was the moment he knew.
Because Vanessa had spent years fighting.
Years explaining.
Years defending herself.
But now?
Nothing.
No excuse.
No argument.
Just guilt.
Daniel took a step back.
“You changed the will.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t mean to.””
The anger on his face was immediate.
“Stop saying that.””
“I was scared.””
“You changed my daughter’s inheritance.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And for once, she didn’t fight back.
I looked at the envelope in Daniel’s hand.
Ava’s name was written across the front.
A letter from a grandmother who had loved her.
A letter that had been hidden.
A letter people had destroyed relationships over.
And somehow, the person closest to us had been the one standing in the middle of it all.
“Open it,” I said quietly.
Daniel looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
I swallowed.
“But Ava found it for a reason.””
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded letter.
The paper was old.
The handwriting was familiar to him.
His hands started shaking.
“My mother’s handwriting.””
He unfolded it.
At first, he read silently.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked up.
His eyes were filled with pain.
“She knew.””
“About what?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Everything.””
Vanessa sat down on the garden bench.
“I knew she suspected.””
Daniel kept reading.
Then he spoke the words out loud.
“She wrote that she believed someone was trying to change her final wishes.””
My stomach tightened.
Daniel continued.
“She said she discovered a modified version of her will after she signed the first documents.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel…”
He ignored her.
“She wrote that the new document removed Ava as the beneficiary.””
I felt my hands go cold.
“And replaced her with who?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
Then slowly answered:
“Ethan.””
Silence.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You signed it.””
“I didn’t know what it was.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I thought it was temporary.””
“What was temporary?””
She started crying.
“The guardianship.””
Daniel stared.
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“After your mother got sick, she asked me to help organize things. She trusted me.””
Daniel looked away.
“She shouldn’t have.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice cracked.
“You were one of the few people she trusted.””
Vanessa nodded.
“And I failed her.””
The honesty surprised me.
Maybe because it came too late.
Maybe because there was no way to undo what happened.
Daniel looked back at the letter.
“What else did she say?””
He continued reading.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at us.
“She knew who changed it.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She already knew.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your father.””
The words hit harder than before.
Daniel stared.
“My father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He pressured me.””
“What?””
“He said your mother was confused because of her illness.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“My father said that?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was young.””
“You were an adult.””
“I was scared.””
Daniel looked away.
I could see the pain.
Because suddenly this wasn’t only about Vanessa.
It was about his entire family.
The people he trusted.
The people who had shaped his life.
“What did my father want?””
Vanessa looked at the ground.
“Control.””
“Of the inheritance?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because he had debts.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“So everyone knew.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not everyone.””
“Who knew?””
She looked at him.
“Your brother.””
Of course.
The pattern was becoming clear.
Secrets passed from one person to another.
Money.
Fear.
Control.
Daniel folded the letter carefully.
Then he looked at the documents in the box.
“What are these?””
Vanessa stood slowly.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That your mother fought back.””
Daniel opened the first document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he froze.
“This is a legal statement.””
“Yes.””
“Signed by my mother.””
“Yes.””
He read faster.
Then he looked up.
“She tried to reverse the change.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She found out what they did.””
“And?””
“She was preparing to expose them.””
“Why didn’t she?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because she died.””
The garden went silent.
Daniel stared at the paper.
Then he found another document.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
I stepped closer.
“What?””
He held it up.
“A medical report.””
Vanessa became pale.
Daniel read.
Then he whispered:
“This says there were unusual substances found.””
My heart dropped.
“The poison?””
Vanessa nodded.
“But nobody knew.””
Daniel looked at her.
“How did you know?””
She looked terrified.
“Because I saw the report before it disappeared.””
“Who made it disappear?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Daniel already knew.
“Your father.””
She nodded.
For several moments, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A message.
From Ethan.
*Did you find the letter?*
Daniel stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
*Because Ava already told me where it was.*
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel showed us the screen.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
A third message arrived.
*You have ten minutes.*
Then a picture appeared.
Ava.
She was sitting in the same room as before.
But this time, there was something different.
She wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing behind her.
A man.
Older.
Someone I recognized from old family photos.
Daniel saw him too.
His face went pale.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He couldn’t answer.
His hand started shaking.
“Daniel?””
He whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is it?””
He looked at the picture.
At the man standing behind Ava.
And then he said the words that made Vanessa collapse.
“That’s my father.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because Daniel’s father had been dead for eight years.
The same man who was supposed to have helped hide the truth.
The same man who was supposedly gone.
Was standing behind Ava.
Alive.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She shook her head violently.
“No.””
“You knew he was alive.””
“I didn’t!””
“Then explain that.””
She couldn’t.
The phone buzzed again.
This time, a video started automatically.
Ava’s voice came through.
“Dad…”
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Ava?””
She looked into the camera.
Her eyes were full of tears.
“Dad, there’s something you need to know.””
A shadow moved behind her.
Then an older man stepped into view.
And Daniel dropped the phone.
Because the man looked directly at the camera and said:
“Hello, son.””
May you like
A pause.
“I think it’s time you learned what really happened the night your mother died.””
