Chapter 2: The Name Behind The Transfer
Daniel stepped back just in time.
Vanessa’s hand grabbed nothing but air.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The only sound in the room was the soft hum of the refrigerator and Ava’s quiet breathing beside me.
Daniel held the phone tightly against his chest.
His face had changed.
The anger was still there, but something deeper had replaced it.
Something closer to disbelief.
“Vanessa,” he said slowly.
“What is this?””
She forced a laugh.
“Give me the phone, Daniel. You’re misunderstanding something.””
“I’m misunderstanding?”” he repeated.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
I had known Daniel for seven years. I knew what his silence meant.
It meant he was trying not to explode.
Vanessa looked toward me.
“You’re really going to stand there and let him accuse me?””
I stared at her.
A few minutes earlier, I might have searched for an explanation.
I might have tried to convince myself there was some mistake.
But then I looked at Ava.
My daughter was still holding that twenty-dollar bill in her tiny hand.
The same hand Vanessa had grabbed it from.
“No,” I said quietly.
Vanessa’s eyebrows lifted.
“No?””
“No, I’m not going to fix this for you.””
Her expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Daniel looked back at the phone.
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was the first thing that scared me.
Because Vanessa always had an answer.
When Ava’s birthday money disappeared, she had an explanation.
When her snacks went missing, she had an explanation.
When Ava cried because her things were moved around, Vanessa always had an explanation.
But now?
Nothing.
Daniel unlocked the phone again.
He stared at the transaction.
“What does this name mean?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
She recognized something.
“What name?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at us.
“The recipient.””
My heart tightened.
“Who did it go to?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, stop.””
That was all he needed to hear.
He looked directly at her.
“Who did it go to?””
She pressed her lips together.
“It’s complicated.””
“Complicated?”” Daniel repeated.
“You took money from a child’s savings account and sent it somewhere, and your explanation is that it’s complicated?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Vanessa looked away.
Ava whispered beside me.
“Mom…”
I squeezed her hand.
“I’m here.””
She looked up at me.
“Am I in trouble?””
That question broke my heart.
“No, sweetheart.””
“But she said I shouldn’t leave my money where people can find it.””
Daniel heard that.
His expression changed instantly.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You said that to her?””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Oh, come on. Don’t act like I abused her.””
Nobody said the word abuse.
But the way she rushed to deny it made the room feel colder.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You took money from her account.””
“For the family.””
“No.””
“For my children.””
“No.””
“For something important.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Still no.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re making me the villain because I helped my own kids?””
“By stealing from Ava?””
“She had savings sitting there!””
The second the words left her mouth, everyone went silent.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew she had savings.””
Vanessa realized her mistake.
“I mean—”
“No.””
Daniel took a step closer.
“You knew exactly how much she had.””
She looked away.
I felt a chill run through me.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
This wasn’t random.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
Vanessa had been watching.
Tracking.
Waiting.
Daniel started scrolling through the account history.
“How long?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“How long have you been taking money from her?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
“You people are acting like I planned some horrible crime.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“You made twenty-three withdrawals.””
Vanessa went quiet.
Twenty-three.
I felt sick.
Ava’s eyes widened.
Twenty-three times.
My daughter had trusted someone who was supposed to protect her.
Daniel kept scrolling.
Then he stopped again.
“What is this?””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“What?””
He looked at her.
“You know.””
“No, I don’t.””
“Yes, you do.””
Daniel turned the screen toward me.
There were two separate transfers.
One was small.
A few hundred dollars.
The other was the one that had changed everything.
A much larger amount.
The one Vanessa had panicked over.
“What does the note say?”” I asked.
Daniel zoomed in.
The words appeared.
My stomach dropped.
“Medical expense?””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at her.
“For who?””
She didn’t answer.
“For who, Vanessa?””
“My son.””
The answer came quietly.
Daniel blinked.
“Your son?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My oldest.””
I knew she had children from a previous marriage.
Two sons.
But they were adults now.
They lived in another state.
Daniel had always helped when he could.
That was just who he was.
But this felt different.
“You told me he was working,” Daniel said.
“He is.””
“Then why did you take money from Ava?””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Because I needed it.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked around the room.
At me.
At Ava.
At Daniel.
And for the first time, she looked less like someone defending herself.
She looked trapped.
“He was in trouble.””
“What kind of trouble?”” Daniel asked.
Silence.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“I can’t.””
Daniel laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“You can’t tell us why you stole from a child?””
“He’s my son!””
“And she’s my daughter!””
The words echoed through the room.
Ava flinched.
Daniel immediately softened.
He knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””
She nodded but didn’t speak.
I could see the confusion on her face.
Children weren’t supposed to understand betrayal.
They weren’t supposed to learn that adults could smile at them while hurting them.
Daniel stood again.
“Show me your bank account.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
“Your account.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to know where Ava’s money went.””
Her expression changed.
“No.””
That one word was different.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Daniel noticed too.
“No?””
“You don’t have the right.””
“I absolutely have the right.””
“It’s my account.””
“And Ava’s money left her account and went somewhere.””
“You’re overreacting.””
“Open it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
She didn’t respond.
The silence answered for her.
I felt my chest tighten.
All those years.
All those little moments.
The missing money.
The excuses.
The way Ava had started hiding her belongings.
It suddenly connected.
Vanessa wasn’t careless.
She wasn’t confused.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
Daniel took out his own phone.
“I’m calling the bank.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Daniel, don’t.””
“I’m done asking.””
She moved toward him.
“Please.””
The word shocked me.
Vanessa never begged.
Not once.
Daniel stopped.
“You have five minutes to explain.””
She looked at him.
Then at Ava.
Then down at the floor.
Her voice became barely a whisper.
“I didn’t think I would have to pay it back this way.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“What did you do, Vanessa?””
She covered her face with both hands.
And then she said something that made my entire body go cold.
“I didn’t transfer Ava’s money because my son had medical bills.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then why?””
Vanessa slowly looked up.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Because the person I owed money to knew where I lived.””
Nobody spoke.
The room felt smaller.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“What person?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked down.
Unknown number.
The moment Vanessa saw the screen, all the color drained from her face.
“Don’t answer that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
Her hands started shaking.
“Because if they know you found out…”
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Daniel stared at the number.
Then he pressed accept.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar enough to make Vanessa start crying.
Daniel’s expression changed as he listened.
Then he looked slowly toward Vanessa.
“Who is this?””
The man on the other end answered.
And Daniel’s face went pale.
May you like
Because the caller wasn’t asking for Vanessa.
He was asking for Ava.
