Chapter 3: The Voice That Knew Her Name

“Who is this?””

Daniel’s voice was low, but I could hear the tension underneath it.

He was standing in the middle of our living room, phone pressed against his ear, while Vanessa looked like she had forgotten how to breathe.

Ava was still holding my hand.

Her fingers were cold.

The man on the other end of the call didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was worse than any threat.

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

Then he looked at me.

“Hello?””

Finally, the voice came through.

“Tell Vanessa the payment isn’t complete.””

My stomach tightened.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored the question.

“You found the transfer, didn’t you?””

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, hang up.””

He didn’t.

The man continued.

“You should have stayed out of it.””

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“You called my house. You knew my daughter’s name. Start explaining.””

A short laugh came through the speaker.

Not nervous.

Not scared.

A laugh from someone who thought they still had control.

“I know a lot about your family.””

The words made my skin crawl.

Daniel immediately moved closer to Ava.

“What do you want?””

The man paused.

Then he said something that changed the atmosphere completely.

“I want what Vanessa promised me.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

Like she knew it was coming.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What did you promise him?””

No answer.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””

The man on the phone spoke again.

“She always says that.””

Daniel lifted the phone closer.

“You know her?””

A pause.

Then:

“I know exactly who she is.””

The call ended.

Just like that.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Nothing.

Daniel stood there staring at the screen.

I could see the questions racing through his mind.

Mine were doing the same.

A stranger had called our house.

He knew about Ava.

He knew about the money.

And Vanessa knew who he was.

I turned toward her.

“Who was that?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She sat down slowly on the couch.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like the weight of something she had hidden for years had finally become too heavy.

Daniel walked toward her.

“I’m asking one more time.””

She looked up.

“I owe someone money.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

“Then give me the truth.””

Vanessa looked at Ava.

Ava immediately moved closer to me.

That small movement hurt more than anything.

Because my daughter was afraid of her.

The person who had once promised to be family.

Vanessa noticed.

And for a second, guilt crossed her face.

Only for a second.

Then she looked away.

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. A mistake is forgetting to pay a bill. A mistake is missing an appointment.””

His voice hardened.

“You made choices.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

“You stole from mine.””

The words hit her.

She looked down.

“I never wanted to hurt Ava.””

“But you did.””

Silence.

The kind that filled every corner of the room.

I walked toward the table and picked up the twenty-dollar bill Ava had saved.

I handed it back to her.

“Put it somewhere safe.””

Ava looked at me.

“Where?””

I hated that she had to ask.

“Somewhere only you can reach.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“I don’t want to live here anymore.””

My heart broke.

Daniel heard her.

He immediately crouched beside her.

“You’re not going anywhere because of what someone else did.””

“But she hates me.””

Ava’s voice cracked.

“She doesn’t hate you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

But Vanessa didn’t defend herself.

Maybe because she knew she couldn’t.

Ava wiped her eyes.

“She always says I’m not really family.””

The room froze.

Daniel slowly turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“I never said that.””

Ava looked down.

“Yes, you did.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

My breathing stopped.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“What did you say to her?””

Vanessa stood quickly.

“I was angry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I said something I didn’t mean.””

“What did you say?””

She stayed silent.

Daniel’s voice rose.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa finally whispered:

“I said her real family would never leave her money problems behind.””

I felt my hands start shaking.

Because now I understood.

This wasn’t just about money.

It was about the way Vanessa had been slowly making Ava feel unwanted.

Small.

Like she had to earn her place.

Daniel looked devastated.

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice broke slightly.

“You were there when my own mother died.””

She looked away.

“You helped me through that.””

“I know.””

“I thought you cared about us.””

“I do.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa had no answer.

And somehow that was worse.

Daniel picked up his phone again.

“I’m calling the bank.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“I’m not asking.””

“You don’t understand what will happen.””

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“If you report this, everything falls apart.””

“What falls apart?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My son.””

Daniel’s expression softened slightly.

“What about him?””

“He borrowed money.””

“From who?””

She looked terrified.

“People who don’t forgive.””

The room went quiet.

I crossed my arms.

“So you stole from Ava to pay them?””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

“How much?””

She looked at the floor.

“More than I could replace.””

Daniel stared at her.

“How much?””

“Forty thousand dollars.””

My mouth fell open.

Ava’s savings account had never had that much.

So where did the rest come from?

Daniel must have been thinking the same thing.

“Where did you get the rest?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Then Daniel looked at the phone again.

The transaction history.

The withdrawals.

The transfers.

His eyes moved across the screen.

And suddenly, his face changed.

“Wait.””

He zoomed in.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

He walked toward the window.

“There’s another account linked.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why was your bank account connected to Ava’s?””

Vanessa’s face went completely blank.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“You had access.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He held up the phone.

“Your name is listed as an authorized user.””

Vanessa looked like she might collapse.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

She looked at me.

Then at Ava.

Then back at Daniel.

And suddenly, I realized something.

She wasn’t scared because we found out she stole money.

She was scared because we were getting closer to something bigger.

Something she had been hiding.

Daniel opened another screen.

His fingers stopped.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t respond.

“What is this?””

I walked closer.

“What did you find?””

Daniel looked at the phone.

His voice was almost a whisper.

“There’s a second transfer.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“No.””

“It happened two months before the withdrawals started.””

Daniel turned the phone around.

On the screen was a transaction from Vanessa’s account.

A large amount.

Sent to someone else.

But that wasn’t what made Daniel freeze.

It was the name attached.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t a creditor.

It wasn’t a hospital.

It was someone connected to our family.

Someone we had trusted.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you send money to my brother?””

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Because I had never heard Daniel sound afraid before.

Vanessa whispered:

“Because he knew.””

“Knew what?””

She looked toward the front door.

Like she expected someone to be standing there.

Then she said the words that made my blood turn cold.

“He knew what really happened to your mother’s inheritance.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What inheritance?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

“Daniel…”

Her voice trembled.

“Your mother didn’t leave you what you think she left you.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed again.

A new message.

From the same unknown number.

He opened it.

May you like

There was only one sentence.

*Ask Vanessa why she changed the will.*
