Chapter 7: The Truth Beneath The Inheritance

For several seconds, Daniel didn’t react.

It was like his mind refused to understand the words.

“She was poisoned.””

Vanessa’s confession hung in the air.

A sentence so impossible that even the silence afterward felt unreal.

Daniel stared at her.

Then he laughed once.

A broken, empty sound.

“No.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“My mother was sick.””

“I know.””

“She had doctors.””

“I know.””

“She had treatments.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t stand there and tell me—”

His voice cracked.

“Don’t tell me my mother was murdered.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I’m not saying she was murdered.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You just said she was poisoned.””

“I said what I found.””

The room became quiet again.

I watched Daniel’s face.

He was trying to hold himself together.

Trying to be the strong father Ava needed.

But behind his anger was something else.

Pain.

Because this wasn’t just about money anymore.

It was about losing his mother twice.

Once when she died.

And again when he realized he might never have known the truth.

“Tell me everything,” Daniel said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can’t.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because I don’t know everything.””

“But you know enough.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

I stepped forward.

“Then start with what you know.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I know I made terrible choices.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

“I know.””

Her voice trembled.

“I know I should have told Daniel years ago.””

“About what?””

She swallowed.

“About the night before his mother died.””

Daniel went still.

“The night before?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She called me.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She told me she was afraid.””

Daniel stared.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“Afraid of what?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Someone close to her.””

The answer made the room colder.

Daniel looked around.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Who was she afraid of?””

“I don’t know.””

“You said close to her.””

“I said someone she trusted.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“I never saw her afraid before.””

Her voice cracked.

“Your mother was strong. She wasn’t scared of doctors. She wasn’t scared of dying.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“But that night, she sounded different.””

Daniel looked away.

Trying to process.

“What did she tell you?””

Vanessa whispered:

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, make sure Ava gets the letter.’”

My heart stopped.

“The letter.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you give it to her?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because someone took it first.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the door Ethan had left through.

“My son.””

Daniel became silent.

Then he said:

“You knew.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You knew he had it.””

“Yes.””

“And you still worked with him?””

“I was trying to get it back.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“By stealing from Ava?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I was scared.””

“You were protecting him.””

“No.””

“You were.””

“I was protecting Ava.””

I stepped forward.

“Then why did she cry because of you?””

Vanessa looked at me.

That question hurt her.

Good.

Because I needed her to understand.

Not just confess.

Understand.

“You took from her,” I said.

“I know.””

“You made her feel like she wasn’t part of the family.””

“I know.””

“You watched her hide her own money.””

Vanessa started crying harder.

“I know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

That sentence broke her.

She looked at him like those words hurt more than anger.

“I’m sorry.””

But Daniel turned away.

“I don’t need apologies.””

His phone suddenly buzzed.

All three of us froze.

A message.

From Ethan.

Daniel opened it.

There was a picture.

Ava sitting on a chair.

Alive.

Still scared.

Underneath it was a message.

*30 minutes. Bring the letter.*

Daniel looked up.

“We need to find it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know where it is.””

“Think.””

“I’ve tried.””

“Try harder.””

She closed her eyes.

Then suddenly she whispered:

“Your mother had a safe.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“A private safe.””

“Where?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“In the house.””

“My childhood home?””

She nodded.

Daniel stared.

“My mother never told me.””

“She didn’t want anyone to know.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone was watching.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“That’s the part I never figured out.””

Daniel grabbed his keys.

“Take us there.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“What?””

“The house.””

“You don’t know where the safe is.””

“My mother left clues.””

Vanessa stared.

“How?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Ava’s room was.

“She loved puzzles.””

A small, sad smile crossed his face.

“When I was a kid, she hid birthday presents around the house and left clues.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“She did the same thing with the letter.””

“Then why didn’t you find it?””

“Because I didn’t know what I was looking for.””

Daniel walked toward the door.

“Now we do.””

I followed him.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

I lowered my voice.

“We’re not just finding a letter.””

He looked at me.

“We’re finding Ava.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Before we left, Vanessa stopped us.

“There’s something else.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Your brother wasn’t the first person who knew about the trust.””

Daniel froze.

“Who else?””

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He knew.””

“My father died years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Vanessa looked down.

“He left something behind.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Where?””

“In the same place as the letter.””

My heart sank.

“And what was on it?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your father admitted he knew what happened to your mother.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What happened?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“He said he tried to stop it.””

“And?””

“He failed.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel opened the door.

“We’re going.””

The drive to his childhood home was silent.

No one knew what to say.

Every few minutes, Daniel checked his phone.

No new messages.

No calls.

Nothing.

That scared me more.

When we arrived, the old house looked exactly like I imagined.

Quiet.

Abandoned.

Full of memories.

Daniel unlocked the door.

The smell hit him immediately.

Old wood.

Dust.

The past.

He stood there for a moment.

Then whispered:

“I can’t believe I’m back here.””

Vanessa walked inside.

“She loved this place.””

Daniel looked around.

“She loved people.””

He walked toward the hallway.

“My mother always said houses remember.””

I followed him.

“Remember what?””

He looked at the walls.

“Everything.””

Then he stopped.

His eyes moved toward an old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

A photo of Daniel’s parents.

And beside them...

A younger Vanessa.

I stepped closer.

“Wait.””

Daniel looked.

Behind the frame, something was sticking out.

A small piece of paper.

He pulled it free.

Only three words were written.

*LOOK WHERE SHE CRIED.*

Daniel stared.

Vanessa suddenly whispered:

“The garden.””

“What?””

“Your mother’s garden.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

Because Vanessa had gone completely pale.

“Because that’s where she buried things she couldn’t say out loud.””

We rushed outside.

The old garden was overgrown.

But Daniel walked straight toward one place.

A small stone bench.

His mother’s favorite place.

He knelt down.

Under the bench was a metal box.

My heart raced.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a small envelope with Ava’s name written on it.

But before Daniel could touch it, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Ava’s voice came through.

“Dad…”

Daniel nearly collapsed.

“Ava?””

She whispered:

“Dad, I found something.””

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“Ethan doesn’t know I saw it.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“What did you find?””

Ava took a shaky breath.

“Grandma’s letter.””

Then silence.

And then she said:

“Dad…”

“He wasn’t the one who changed the will.””

Daniel froze.

“Who was?””

Ava whispered:

“The person who raised me.””

May you like

The call cut off.

And everyone slowly turned toward Vanessa.
