Chapter 9: The Night That Was Erased From My Memory
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Claire’s words kept replaying in my mind.
*He married you because he was trying to hide something that happened before you even became his wife.*
I looked around the dining room.
The documents.
The photos.
The recordings.
Everything I thought I understood about my marriage had been pulled apart.
But one question remained.
What happened that night?
The night before my wedding.
The night everyone seemed determined to erase.
“Claire,” I finally said.
“Yes?””
“What do you know?””
“I’m still investigating.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
Her voice softened.
“But Nora, I need you to be careful.””
Everyone kept telling me that.
Be careful.
Don’t confront him.
Don’t reveal what you know.
For the first time, I understood why.
Julian wasn’t dangerous because he was angry.
He was dangerous because he was patient.
He had spent years building a perfect image.
A perfect marriage.
A perfect lie.
“Claire.””
“Yes?””
“I need to know what happened.””
“I’ll find out.””
“No.””
I looked at the papers in front of me.
“I need to remember.””
There was silence.
Then Claire asked:
“Nora, what do you remember about the night before your wedding?””
I closed my eyes.
And that was the problem.
Almost nothing.
I remembered the rehearsal dinner.
I remembered my father making a toast.
I remembered Julian holding my hand.
I remembered going back to the hotel.
Then…
Nothing.
A blank space.
Like someone had removed a piece of my life.
“I don’t know.””
Claire became quiet.
“That’s what worries me.””
The next morning, I went to my father’s old house.
It had been empty since he passed away.
I hadn’t visited in months.
Not because I didn’t love him.
Because every room carried memories I wasn’t ready to face.
But now I needed answers.
The house still smelled like him.
The old wooden floors.
The books in his office.
The leather chair where he used to sit while reading financial reports.
I walked straight to his desk.
When I was a child, my father told me something.
“People hide important things in ordinary places.””
I never understood what he meant.
Until now.
I opened the drawers.
Nothing.
I checked the shelves.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something strange.
A small gap behind one of the books.
I pulled it out.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
My heart started racing.
Inside was a small box.
Old.
Dusty.
My father had hidden it there.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope with my name.
*Nora.*
My hands shook.
My father had written this.
I opened it carefully.
The letter was dated three days before my wedding.
My dearest Nora,
If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.
I stopped.
My breathing changed.
I continued.
I wanted to tell you everything before your wedding day, but I was afraid you would make a decision based on emotion instead of truth.
Julian Vance is not the man he pretends to be.
My heart sank.
I kept reading.
He came into your life at exactly the right moment.
Too perfectly.
At first, I believed it was coincidence.
Then I found evidence that it wasn’t.
My father knew.
He knew.
The next paragraph made my hands go cold.
Julian’s family has been trying to gain control of Bennett Holdings for years. But the marriage was not his original plan.
Something changed after the night at the hotel.
The night before your wedding.
I stopped reading.
The hotel.
Again.
I forced myself to continue.
Nora, there was an accident.
An accident involving Julian.
And someone else.
Someone who cannot let the truth come out.
My heart pounded.
I turned the page.
But the rest was missing.
The letter ended.
The bottom half had been torn away.
“No.””
I searched the box.
Nothing.
Someone had taken the rest.
But why leave the first half?
Unless they wanted me to find it.
Unless they wanted me to know enough to be afraid.
My phone rang.
I almost dropped it.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
Older.
Shaky.
“Is this Nora Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel Foster.””
I frowned.
“I don’t know you.””
“You don’t remember me.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“What do you mean?””
“I was the hotel manager three years ago.””
I stood completely still.
“The night before your wedding.””
Silence.
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What happened?””
A long pause.
Then:
“You were not supposed to see what happened.””
My blood went cold.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Julian made sure you forgot.””
My entire body froze.
“How?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me what you know.””
The man took a breath.
“Your father came to the hotel that night.””
My eyes widened.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To meet Julian.””
That didn’t make sense.
“My father hated Julian.””
“Exactly.””
I walked toward the window.
“What happened in that meeting?””
“I wasn’t there.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because I saw what happened afterward.””
“What?””
“Julian left the room angry.””
“How angry?””
Daniel became quiet.
“Angry enough that another guest called security.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Selina.””
Of course.
Everything returned to her.
“Why was Selina there?””
“I don’t know.””
“Daniel.””
“I swear.””
His voice became urgent.
“But I do know this.””
“What?””
“The next morning, you woke up with no memory of the argument.””
I felt dizzy.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I was the person who found you.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
“You were sitting in the hallway outside the hotel suite.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“I don’t remember that.””
“I know.””
“What happened to me?””
“I called Julian.””
A silence.
“Why?””
“Because he told me he was your fiancé.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Everyone trusted Julian.
Everyone believed he was protecting me.
“What did he do?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“He told me you were overwhelmed and confused.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He paused.
“He told me to forget I saw anything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why are you telling me now?””
Another pause.
“Because I saw the news.””
The article.
The accusation.
The attempt to destroy me.
“And I realized he was doing the same thing again.””
“What?””
“Changing the story.””
My chest tightened.
“Daniel, what happened that night?””
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“Your father found out Julian had been using you.””
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
“He confronted him.””
“What happened?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“Your father threatened to expose him.””
My heart was pounding.
“And?””
“And someone pushed him.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
“I don’t know who.””
“Daniel.””
“I only saw your father fall.””
My hand shook.
“My father died months later from a heart condition.””
“Yes.””
“But you’re saying…”
“I’m saying the night before your wedding changed everything.””
I sat down.
My entire body felt weak.
“Did Julian push him?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did Selina?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then what do you know?””
His voice cracked.
“I know Julian begged me not to call the police.””
My blood ran cold.
That evening, I returned home.
But it wasn’t my home anymore.
It was the place where Julian had built his lies.
I walked into the living room.
The same place where Selina had stood crying.
The same place where Julian accused me.
I looked at the rug.
The rug where everything started.
Then my smartwatch vibrated.
A notification.
A file transfer completed.
I opened it.
A hidden backup from the recording.
One part I had never listened to.
The final minutes.
My finger hovered over play.
Then I pressed.
At first, there was silence.
Then Julian’s voice.
Low.
Angry.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking me to do.””
Selina answered.
“You promised.””
“I promised to fix it.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You promised Nora would never know.””
My blood froze.
Then Julian said:
“She won’t remember.””
I stopped breathing.
A few seconds passed.
Then Selina whispered:
“What if she does?””
Julian answered.
“Then we make sure nobody believes her.””
I stared at the screen.
The recording continued.
Then came the sound of a door opening.
A third voice.
A voice I recognized.
My father.
And the last words I heard before the recording ended were:
“Julian… you have no idea what your own wife is about to discover.””
The file stopped.
I sat there in silence.
Because finally, I understood.
The ICU.
The accusation.
The destruction of my reputation.
It was never about Selina’s scratch.
That was just the beginning.
Julian wasn’t trying to protect her.
He was trying to protect the secret that could destroy him.
May you like
And now I had one question left.
What really happened the night my father tried to expose him?
