Chapter 7: The Lie That Went Public

I stared at the headline until my eyes started burning.

*“Wife of Billionaire CEO Accused of Assaulting His Former Love Interest.””*

My name.

My face.

My life.

Displayed for thousands of people to judge.

I clicked the article.

The first sentence made my stomach turn.

Sources close to Vance Global claim that Nora Bennett Vance became aggressive after discovering Julian Vance’s former partner had returned to his life.

Former partner.

Not friend.

Not acquaintance.

They were already changing the story.

The article continued.

It described Selina as a victim.

A woman who had “attempted to avoid conflict.””

A woman who had “only sought help from someone she trusted.””

And me?

I was described as jealous.

Unstable.

Obsessive.

The exact words Julian had used when he wanted to make me doubt myself.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

This wasn’t just an accusation.

It was a strategy.

They weren’t trying to win an argument.

They were trying to destroy my credibility before I could speak.

I looked at the photo attached to the article.

It was from the hidden camera.

The camera inside my own home.

A picture of me walking down the hallway after Julian threatened me.

But the article cropped everything before that moment.

No context.

No audio.

No proof.

Just an image designed to tell a story.

Their story.

I sat down slowly.

For years, Julian had controlled boardrooms, negotiations, and public appearances.

I knew how powerful he was.

But I had never imagined he would use that power against me.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Julian.

For a moment, I considered ignoring it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Nora.””

“Yes?””

“Have you seen the news?””

I almost laughed.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“What do you think?””

I closed my eyes.

What did I think?

I thought my husband had turned my own home into a trap.

I thought the man who promised to protect me was now creating a public execution of my reputation.

But I said:

“I think you already know.””

“Nora, this situation has gone too far.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Has it?””

“Yes.””

His voice became serious.

“You need to cooperate.””

I felt a chill.

“Cooperate with what?””

“Tell the truth.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“You want me to tell the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Okay.””

My voice became quieter.

“The truth is that Selina walked into our house pretending she was hurt.””

Silence.

“The truth is that you believed her without asking me a single question.””

“Nora.””

“The truth is that you had cameras installed around our home without telling me.””

Another silence.

Then his voice changed.

“You went through my files.””

I froze.

Not because of the accusation.

Because of what it confirmed.

He knew.

He knew about the documents.

“You were watching me.””

“I was protecting myself.””

“No.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You were controlling me.””

“Nora, listen carefully.””

His tone became colder.

“You need to stop fighting this.””

“Fighting what?””

“The inevitable.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

“You don’t understand how serious this is.””

“Explain it.””

“You have made yourself look guilty.””

I gripped the phone.

“You mean because I refused to let Selina destroy me?””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“Because nobody believes you.””

The sentence hurt.

Not because it was true.

Because he wanted it to be.

“You’re enjoying this.””

A pause.

Then:

“You should have thought about the consequences before attacking her.””

I went silent.

Because there it was.

The lie.

He was still choosing it.

Even now.

Even when he knew I had evidence.

“Julian.””

“Yes?””

“I know about the emails.””

The silence on the other end was immediate.

I continued.

“I know about the agreement.””

No answer.

“I know Selina was never just your past.””

His breathing changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Where did you get those?””

I smiled sadly.

Not because I was happy.

Because I finally saw him clearly.

Not my husband.

Not the man I loved.

A man calculating his next move.

“That’s what you care about?””

“Nora.””

“No.””

I interrupted.

“You’re not asking if I’m okay. You’re not asking if I’m hurt.””

I swallowed.

“You’re asking how much I know.””

He didn’t deny it.

And that silence broke something inside me.

“Goodbye, Julian.””

I ended the call.

Two hours later, my lawyer called.

I had never needed one before.

Julian handled legal matters.

Julian handled everything.

That was my mistake.

I had trusted him with my entire life.

“Nora, I saw the article.””

My attorney, Claire Morgan, had represented my father before he passed away.

She was one of the few people I trusted completely.

“I need your help.””

“I know.””

Her voice was serious.

“The media story is only the beginning.””

“What do you mean?””

“There are legal documents being prepared.””

I closed my eyes.

“Against me?””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

A pause.

Then:

“Divorce filings.””

I felt strangely calm.

Maybe because some part of me already knew.

“He wants to divorce me?””

“Yes.””

I laughed softly.

“After everything?””

Claire didn’t respond.

“Tell me something, Nora.””

“What?””

“Did Julian ever ask you to sign anything recently?””

I thought back.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

“Why?””

“Because if he claims certain things, we need to know exactly what he has.””

I looked toward the security camera hidden in my bedroom.

“He has more than I thought.””

“What?””

I told her everything.

The cameras.

The emails.

The documents.

The recording on my smartwatch.

When I mentioned the recording, her voice changed.

“You still have it?””

“Yes.””

“Do not give it to anyone.””

“Why?””

“Because that may be the most important evidence you have.””

I looked at my watch.

The small device suddenly felt heavier.

“That recording could prove everything.””

“Yes.””

Claire paused.

“But Nora…”

“What?””

“Be careful.””

I had heard that too many times recently.

From Marcus.

From the anonymous woman.

Now from Claire.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Because powerful people don’t panic when they are exposed.””

A pause.

“They panic when they lose control.””

That evening, I received another message.

Not from Julian.

Not from Marcus.

From Selina.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I stared at the screen.

A year ago, I would have been shocked.

Today, I wasn’t.

I replied:

*Why?*

Her answer came immediately.

*Because Julian is going to let you take the fall.*

I froze.

I read it again.

Then again.

A second message arrived.

*You think he chose me because he loves me.*

A third.

*You’re wrong.*

My heart started racing.

I didn’t know what game she was playing.

Maybe it was another trap.

Maybe she wanted information.

Maybe she wanted to manipulate me.

But then the final message appeared.

And I knew I had to meet her.

*Julian didn’t come back to me because of love. He came back because I know what he did three years ago.*

I stared at the words.

Three years ago.

The night before my wedding.

The hotel photo.

The folder.

Everything connected to that night.

I grabbed my coat.

Because I finally understood.

Selina wasn’t just the woman who betrayed me.

She was also holding something over Julian.

May you like

And whatever happened three years ago…

Was the one thing he was willing to destroy me to keep hidden.
