Chapter 5: The Stranger Who Knew My Husband’s Secret

I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

*Nora, don’t trust your husband.*

Five words.

Five words that should have terrified me.

Instead, they gave a name to the feeling I had been carrying for months.

The feeling that something inside my marriage had already died, and I was the only person pretending it was still alive.

I looked again at the photo attached to the previous message.

Julian.

Selina.

The hotel entrance.

The night before my wedding.

My hands trembled as I zoomed in.

I studied every detail.

The way Julian stood close to her.

The way Selina looked comfortable beside him.

The way he wasn’t acting like a man saying goodbye to his past.

He looked like a man protecting his future.

My future.

The one he built with me while hiding another woman behind it.

I saved the picture.

Then I saved the message.

Then I did something I never thought I would do.

I created a hidden file labeled:

*Insurance.*

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I finally understood something.

The truth was useless if nobody believed it.

And Julian Vance was a man who could make people believe almost anything.

The next day, I barely spoke.

Julian noticed.

Of course he did.

He noticed everything that affected him.

Not everything that affected me.

I was sitting in the kitchen when he walked in.

He was already dressed for work.

Perfect suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect expression.

The same man the world admired.

The same man who had looked at me like I was a threat.

“You’re quiet.””

I looked up from my coffee.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

I shrugged.

“Maybe I’m tired.””

He studied me.

“You haven’t been yourself lately.””

The words almost made me laugh.

“Neither have you.””

His expression tightened.

“I’m trying to understand what’s happening to you.””

I placed my cup down.

“What’s happening to me?””

“Yes.””

He pulled out the chair across from me.

“You’ve become suspicious. You’re searching through my things. You’re making accusations.””

I looked at him.

“You forgot one thing.””

“What?””

“I’m reacting to what you’re doing.””

He looked away.

“Nora.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m done accepting blame for discovering the truth.””

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then his phone buzzed.

I already knew who it was before he checked.

Selina.

His eyes moved to the screen.

And again, that small change happened.

Concern.

Attention.

The same expression he used to have when I was the person calling.

He stood.

“I have to take this.””

“Of course.””

He paused.

“You don’t have to be sarcastic.””

“I’m not.””

I looked at him.

“I’m just tired of competing with someone who isn’t even supposed to be in this marriage.””

His jaw tightened.

“Nora, be careful.””

There it was.

The warning.

Again.

I watched him leave.

And this time, I didn’t feel hurt.

I felt certain.

At 8:30 that night, I left the house.

I didn’t tell Julian.

I didn’t explain.

I didn’t ask permission.

That alone felt strange.

For years, I had measured every decision by how he would react.

Would he approve?

Would he understand?

Would he be angry?

Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten I was allowed to make choices without fear.

The meeting location was a small coffee shop downtown.

Quiet.

Almost empty.

I arrived ten minutes early.

I chose a table near the window.

A place where I could see the door.

A habit I never had before.

A habit I developed after realizing the person closest to me might be the person I needed protection from.

At exactly 9 PM, the door opened.

A man walked in.

I recognized him immediately.

Marcus Hale.

Julian’s assistant.

My body went tense.

He looked around.

Then he saw me.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Finally, he walked over.

“Mrs. Vance.””

I didn’t invite him to sit.

“You sent the messages.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus glanced around before lowering his voice.

“Because you’re in danger.””

I almost smiled.

“Danger?””

He nodded.

“You don’t understand what Julian and Selina are planning.””

My heart raced.

“Then explain.””

He sat down.

“I’ve worked for Julian for eight years.””

“I know.””

“I know him better than most people.””

I looked at him.

“Apparently not better than Selina.””

Marcus looked down.

“That’s the problem.””

“What does that mean?””

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his briefcase.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Evidence.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Evidence of what?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“Julian didn’t just reconnect with Selina after your marriage.””

My stomach tightened.

“He was planning to bring her back before you married him.””

The world seemed to slow down.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“I found emails.””

“Between them?””

“Yes.””

“What did they say?””

He swallowed.

“Julian promised her that once he secured certain assets, he would fix everything.””

My fingers curled around the edge of the table.

“Fix everything?””

Marcus looked away.

“He told her the marriage was temporary.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Temporary.

That word hurt more than any insult.

Because it meant every memory I had protected was built on something fake.

My wedding.

Our home.

Our promises.

All temporary.

“No.””

Marcus pushed the envelope toward me.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

I slowly opened it.

Inside were printed emails.

The first page had Julian’s name.

The date was six months before our wedding.

I read the message.

*Selina, you need to trust me. Nora is the right choice for now. My family will accept her, and the merger will move forward. After everything is secured, we’ll handle the rest.*

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

I looked up.

“Handle the rest?””

Marcus’s face was full of regret.

“I’m sorry.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes pain becomes too large to hold.

“He married me for business.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

The document answered for him.

I continued reading.

Another email.

Another conversation.

Another lie.

Then I saw something that made my blood freeze.

A message from Selina.

*What about Nora?*

Julian’s response:

*She won’t have a choice once everything is transferred.*

I looked up.

“Transferred?””

Marcus leaned forward.

“That’s why I contacted you.””

“What exactly is he transferring?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Your inheritance.””

I went completely still.

“My what?””

“Before your father died, he left you controlling rights to the Bennett Foundation and several investment accounts.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know that?””

“Because Julian has been working with lawyers to gain access.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Marcus’s voice softened.

“Nora.””

“No.””

I stood.

“This can’t be real.””

People in the coffee shop looked over.

I lowered my voice.

“He wouldn’t.””

Marcus looked at me sadly.

“That’s what everyone says before they find out who someone really is.””

I grabbed the papers.

My hands were shaking.

“Why are you helping me?””

He looked down.

“Because I helped him hide things for too long.””

That answer surprised me.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus took a breath.

“I deleted messages. I covered meetings. I made excuses.””

“Why stop now?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Because three days ago, I saw what Julian was willing to do.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he do?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes scared me.

“Mrs. Vance…”

“What?””

“Whatever you do…”

He lowered his voice.

“Do not tell Julian that you have these documents.””

“Why?””

“Because if he knows you found out…”

He paused.

“Everything changes.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

“It means the person you think is trying to destroy your marriage may not be the biggest threat.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

From Julian.

*Where are you?*

I froze.

Another message arrived immediately.

*I checked the house. You’re not here.*

My heart began pounding.

How did he know?

Then the third message appeared.

*Nora, answer me.*

I looked at Marcus.

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

He whispered:

“He knows.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

Marcus looked toward the door.

May you like

Then said the one sentence I would remember forever.

“Because Julian has been watching you longer than you’ve been watching him.””
