Chapter 3: The Video They Never Expected Me To Find

I watched the footage three times.

Then a fourth.

Each time, I hoped I had misunderstood.

I hoped the angle was wrong.

I hoped the woman walking toward my front door wasn’t Selina Cole.

But it was.

The timestamp was clear.

3:07 PM.

The same afternoon she had walked into my living room with tears in her eyes and a tiny scratch on her arm.

The same afternoon my husband looked at me like I was a stranger.

The video showed Selina arriving at the gate.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t afraid.

She wasn’t injured.

She was smiling.

My fingers went numb as I watched her step out of a black SUV.

Then someone else stepped out.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark jacket and sunglasses.

I didn’t recognize him immediately.

But then he turned slightly toward the camera.

My heart stopped.

It was Marcus Hale.

Julian’s personal assistant.

The man who had worked beside him for almost eight years.

The man who knew every detail about Julian’s schedule.

Every business meeting.

Every private appointment.

Every movement.

I leaned closer to the screen.

Why was Marcus with Selina?

The video continued.

Selina stood outside the gate, talking to him.

No audio.

Just body language.

She looked relaxed.

Confident.

Then Marcus handed her something.

A small envelope.

Selina smiled.

She opened it.

And whatever she saw inside made her laugh.

I paused the video.

My breathing became shallow.

An envelope.

What was inside?

I replayed it.

Again.

Again.

Then I noticed something else.

Selina wasn’t alone when she entered the house.

She had already prepared the scene.

The tears.

The fear.

The accusation.

Everything.

I closed my laptop.

My first instinct was to run downstairs and confront Julian.

To throw the video in his face.

To ask him how he could have been so blind.

But I stopped myself.

Because one thing was clear.

Selina had planned this.

And if she had planned this, she had probably planned for me to react emotionally.

She wanted a fight.

She wanted me to look unstable.

She wanted Julian to see me as the problem.

I wasn’t going to give her that.

Not anymore.

I opened my laptop again.

I saved the footage.

Then I created three copies.

One on an external drive.

One in cloud storage.

One hidden in a folder with a fake name.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t thinking like a wife trying to save her marriage.

I was thinking like someone protecting herself.

That evening, Julian came home later than usual.

Almost midnight.

I was sitting in the living room with the lights off.

He stopped when he saw me.

“Nora?””

I looked up.

“Yes.””

He removed his jacket.

“You’re still awake?””

“I was waiting.””

His expression changed.

“For what?””

“The truth.””

He sighed.

“I don’t have the energy for another argument.””

I almost smiled.

Another argument.

That was what he called it.

Not betrayal.

Not deception.

An argument.

“Julian, I watched the security footage.””

He froze.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“What footage?””

“The front gate camera.””

His face became unreadable.

“What about it?””

I stood.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You didn’t ask what I saw.””

Silence.

I walked closer.

“You asked which footage.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Nora.””

“No, answer me.””

I pointed toward him.

“Why were you so sure there was something on the camera?””

He stared at me.

Then his expression hardened.

“You’re twisting my words.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m finally listening.””

His jaw tightened.

“What did you see?””

There it was.

Fear.

Not concern.

Fear.

I noticed.

“I saw Selina arrive.””

He relaxed slightly.

“And?””

“And she wasn’t crying.””

His face changed.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But enough.

“She was upset.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“She was smiling.””

The room went silent.

Julian looked away.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“It proves she lied.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“It proves you’re looking for reasons to hate her.””

I stared at him.

“Why are you defending her so desperately?””

“Because someone has to be reasonable.””

I laughed quietly.

“Reasonable?””

I picked up my phone.

“Julian, I have footage showing Selina arrived calm and happy before she entered this house and accused me of attacking her.””

He stepped closer.

“Show me.””

I hesitated.

That hesitation annoyed him.

“Exactly.””

“What?””

“You don’t have anything.””

I looked at him.

“I have enough.””

“Then show me.””

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because I know you.””

He laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You know me?””

“Yes.””

I held his gaze.

“I know you will find an explanation for her.””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew I was right.

The silence between us felt heavier than any argument.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

Selina.

I watched his eyes drop to the screen.

Julian immediately answered.

“Selina?””

I closed my eyes.

Even now.

Even after everything.

“Are you okay?””

A pause.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He turned away from me.

“I’m coming.””

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

“She had a panic attack.””

I stared.

“You’re leaving?””

“Yes.””

“Right now?””

“She needs help.””

I nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

“Nora.””

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Go.””

He looked surprised.

“You’re not going to fight?””

I smiled.

“No.””

Because I finally understood.

Fighting him would not make him choose me.

The woman who wanted him had already chosen her weapon.

And I needed to choose mine.

As he walked away, I called after him.

“Julian.””

He stopped.

“What?””

I looked at his back.

“Be careful who you trust.””

He turned slightly.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew something he didn’t.

The woman he was protecting wasn’t protecting him.

The next morning, I went to the Vance Global headquarters.

Not to confront Julian.

To find answers.

Marcus Hale had worked there for years.

If he was involved, there had to be records.

Messages.

Meetings.

Something.

The receptionist looked surprised when she saw me.

“Mrs. Vance?””

“Yes.””

“Mr. Vance didn’t say you were coming.””

I smiled politely.

“I’m his wife. I don’t always need an appointment.””

Her expression became uncomfortable.

I walked toward the executive floor.

But before I reached Julian’s office, I heard voices from the conference room.

The door was slightly open.

One voice made me stop.

Selina.

I slowly moved closer.

“I told you this would work.””

My heart tightened.

Marcus answered.

“It worked because Julian never doubts you.””

Selina laughed.

“I knew he wouldn’t.””

I held my breath.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“But Nora is different.””

“She’s not a problem.””

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

There was confidence in her voice.

Too much confidence.

“She loves him too much to fight back.””

My hands curled into fists.

Marcus said something I couldn’t hear.

Then Selina replied.

“Once Julian signs the documents, everything changes.””

Documents.

My stomach dropped.

“What documents?””

I whispered to myself.

Then I heard Marcus.

“And after that?””

Selina answered calmly.

“After that, Nora becomes irrelevant.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

I stepped back.

My shoe hit the edge of a chair.

The sound echoed.

Inside the room, silence.

“Nora?””

Selina’s voice came from behind the door.

I froze.

The door slowly opened.

Selina stood there.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

Not a trace of fear.

“Were you looking for Julian?””

I stared at the woman who had almost destroyed my marriage with a lie.

Then I noticed something in her hand.

A folder.

With Julian’s signature visible on the top page.

And my name written underneath.

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because whatever was inside that folder…

It had something to do with me.
