Chapter 4: The Documents With My Name On Them
For a few seconds, neither Selina nor I moved.
The hallway outside Julian’s executive conference room was silent except for the faint hum of the building’s air conditioning.
Selina held the folder against her chest.
She looked exactly like the woman who had walked into my home pretending to be afraid.
Except now there were no tears.
No trembling voice.
No performance.
Only confidence.
A dangerous amount of it.
“Nora,” she said softly.
The way she said my name almost made me laugh.
Like we were friends.
Like she hadn’t spent days slowly tearing my life apart.
“Were you looking for Julian?””
I looked at the folder.
Then at her.
“What is that?””
Her fingers tightened slightly around it.
“What?””
“The folder.””
She smiled.
“Business documents.””
“Why is my name on it?””
For the first time, her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A tiny flicker of surprise.
Then she recovered.
“You saw that?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“You really shouldn’t be walking around listening to private conversations.””
I stared at her.
“Private conversations about my life?””
Her smile disappeared.
“Nora, you’re emotional right now.””
There it was again.
The same strategy.
Make me sound unstable.
Make me sound unreasonable.
Make everyone believe I was reacting instead of discovering.
“I’m not emotional.””
I looked directly at her.
“I’m awake.””
A small silence passed between us.
Then Marcus stepped out of the conference room.
His face changed the moment he saw me.
“Nora.””
I noticed something immediately.
He wasn’t surprised to see me.
He was worried.
That told me more than anything.
“Marcus.””
I nodded.
“Interesting seeing you here with Selina.””
His expression became careful.
“Mrs. Vance, this isn’t what you think.””
I almost smiled.
People only said that when it was exactly what someone thought.
“Then explain.””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Selina stepped in.
“Don’t put him in an uncomfortable position.””
I looked at her.
“How generous.””
She tilted her head.
“You always did misunderstand people.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I misunderstood one person.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Julian?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was worse.
I misunderstood myself.
I thought loving someone meant they would love me back.
I thought loyalty created loyalty.
I thought marriage meant standing together when things became difficult.
But Julian had already chosen a side.
And I was finally accepting it.
I left the office without saying another word.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I knew I needed more.
The folder mattered.
Whatever was inside it mattered.
But walking out without evidence would only give them another chance to control the story.
I went back to the house and immediately started searching.
Not randomly.
Carefully.
Julian had always been organized.
Every important document had a place.
Every contract.
Every legal file.
Every financial record.
I knew his habits because I had spent three years managing our home.
And I knew exactly where he kept things he didn’t want people to find.
The locked cabinet in his private study.
I stood in front of it for almost ten minutes.
My hand rested on the handle.
A part of me still hesitated.
Because opening that cabinet meant accepting something I didn’t want to accept.
That the man I married might have been planning against me.
I took a breath.
Then I opened it.
Inside were business contracts.
Investment records.
Property documents.
Nothing unusual.
Until I found a thin black folder hidden behind the others.
No label.
No name.
Just a small silver mark on the corner.
My heart started racing.
I opened it.
The first page made my hands shake.
*Marriage Asset Protection Agreement.*
I read the first few lines.
Then the second page.
Then the third.
My vision blurred.
Julian had prepared documents that would separate my assets from his.
That alone wasn’t unusual for someone wealthy.
But then I saw the date.
Two months before Selina came back into our lives.
Two months before the arguments started.
Two months before he began becoming distant.
The next page contained something worse.
A section about removing me from ownership rights connected to the Vance estate.
My name.
My home.
My future.
All being discussed like I was a business problem.
Then I saw the signature.
Julian Vance.
And below it…
A second signature.
Selina Cole.
I dropped the folder.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
I picked it up again.
I needed to be wrong.
I needed there to be another explanation.
But there wasn’t.
Selina had been involved from the beginning.
That evening, Julian came home earlier than usual.
I was sitting at the dining table with the documents beside me.
He immediately noticed.
His face changed.
Not because he saw me.
Because he saw what was in front of me.
“Nora.””
I looked up.
“Hi.””
His eyes moved toward the folder.
“Where did you get that?””
Not:
“What is that?””
Not:
“Are you okay?””
The first thing he asked was where I found it.
I nodded slowly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“That’s the same reaction you had about the footage.””
His jaw tightened.
“Nora, answer me.””
“I found it.””
“In my office?””
“In our home.””
He stared at me.
“You had no right.””
I actually felt numb hearing that.
“No right?””
“Yes.””
“You were planning documents about my life.””
“They’re legal preparations.””
“Without telling me?””
His silence was enough.
I opened the folder.
“Why was Selina’s signature on this?””
The color drained slightly from his face.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“What?””
“Don’t pretend you don’t know.””
He stepped closer.
“Give me that.””
“No.””
“Nora.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
It was firm.
Strong.
The woman standing there wasn’t the same woman who had begged him to listen the day before.
Julian noticed.
And he didn’t like it.
“Where did you get this idea?””
“What idea?””
“That Selina is involved.””
I stared at him.
“Because she is.””
His expression hardened.
“You’re obsessed.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I’m finally paying attention.””
He shook his head.
“I don’t recognize you anymore.””
The irony almost made me cry.
Because that was exactly how I felt about him.
“You know what’s funny?””
He looked at me.
“I spent years trying to become the wife you wanted.””
I touched the folder.
“But maybe you were never looking for a wife.””
His eyes darkened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you were waiting for a replacement.””
The silence was immediate.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Julian stepped closer.
“You need to be careful.””
Again.
That warning.
That same cold tone.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“You and Selina were making plans behind my back.””
His face changed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain.””
He didn’t.
Because he couldn’t.
Instead, he reached for the folder.
I pulled it away.
And that was when I saw something.
A flash of anger.
Not frustration.
Not sadness.
Anger.
The kind of anger someone feels when they lose control.
“You need to stop digging into things that don’t concern you.””
I stared at him.
“My own marriage doesn’t concern me?””
He looked away.
And that was the moment I knew.
Whatever happened next, I couldn’t stay silent.
Later that night, I received a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
*“If you want the truth about Julian and Selina, meet me tomorrow at 9 PM. Come alone.””*
Below it was a photo.
My blood turned cold.
It was a picture of Julian.
And Selina.
Together.
Not from recently.
Not from the past.
From three years ago.
The night before my wedding.
I zoomed in.
Behind them was a hotel entrance.
And in Selina’s hand was the same black folder I had just found.
My phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Because I finally understood.
The betrayal didn’t begin after I married Julian.
It began before I ever walked down the aisle.
And whoever sent me that message knew something even worse.
Something Julian and Selina had spent three years trying to hide.
I looked at the time.
8:47 PM.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
May you like
This time only five words.
*“Nora, don’t trust your husband.””*
