Chapter 1: The Scratch That Changed Everything
“If you ever go near Selina again, you’ll regret it.””
Those were the last words I clearly remembered hearing from my husband before my world collapsed.
For three years, I had convinced myself that Julian Vance loved me.
I had defended him when people whispered that I had married into wealth instead of love. I had ignored the rumors about his first love returning to town. I had swallowed every uncomfortable silence, every late-night phone call, every moment when he seemed more protective of another woman’s feelings than mine.
I thought patience could save a marriage.
I thought loyalty could repair what was broken.
I was wrong.
My name is Nora Bennett.
And before that afternoon, I was still foolish enough to believe my marriage to Julian could be fixed.
Julian was the CEO of Vance Global, a man whose name appeared on magazine covers and business headlines. To the world, he was confident, brilliant, and untouchable.
To me, he was supposed to be my husband.
When we married, I stepped away from the career I had spent years building because Julian told me we were creating something bigger together.
“Let me take care of you,” he had whispered on our wedding night.
“You’ve spent your whole life fighting. Let me give you a peaceful home.””
I believed him.
I left my position as a senior marketing director. I moved into his mansion. I organized charity events, managed our home, and stood beside him at every company function.
I thought I was building a life.
But there had always been a third person in our marriage.
Selina Cole.
Julian’s first love.
The woman he claimed belonged only to his past.
“She was years ago, Nora,” he told me whenever I mentioned her.
“There is nothing between us.””
But I learned something after three years with Julian.
People often reveal the truth through what they protect.
And Julian always protected Selina.
He defended her when she canceled plans.
He defended her when she showed up unexpectedly.
He defended her when I asked why she still called him after midnight.
“She’s going through a difficult time,” he would say.
“She needs someone she trusts.””
I never asked the question that lived in my mind.
Why wasn’t that person her own husband?
Because Selina didn’t have one.
And Julian always seemed to forget that.
The afternoon everything changed started like any other day.
I was upstairs in our bedroom, wearing silk pajamas, answering emails on my tablet. I had a headache, so I decided to stay home instead of attending a lunch event.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
I remember walking downstairs around three in the afternoon because I heard voices.
Julian was sitting in the living room, cutting an apple with a small kitchen knife.
Then the front door opened.
Selina walked inside.
Her face was wet with tears.
A tiny red scratch marked her forearm.
The moment Julian saw her, he stood up.
“Selina?””
His voice changed.
That was the first thing I noticed.
It wasn’t the voice of a friend.
It was the voice of someone terrified that something had happened to someone precious.
“What happened?”” Julian asked.
Selina looked at him, then slowly looked at me.
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“I didn’t want to come here,” she whispered.
Julian stepped closer.
“Selina, tell me what happened.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Nora confronted me downtown.””
The room went silent.
I actually laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain couldn’t process how easily that lie came out.
“What?””
Selina touched her arm gently.
“She was angry.””
Julian stared at me.
Selina continued.
“She blamed me for everything happening between you two.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Julian, that’s not true.””
Selina’s eyes filled with tears.
“She said I destroyed your marriage.””
“I never saw you today,” I said.
My voice sounded strange even to me.
Calm.
Almost too calm.
Because I knew something terrible was happening.
“She cornered me,” Selina whispered.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“She tried to hurt me.””
Julian’s face hardened.
I had seen Julian angry before.
At business meetings.
At competitors.
At people who betrayed him professionally.
But I had never seen him look at me that way.
Like I was the enemy.
“That is a complete lie,” I said.
Julian looked at the scratch on Selina’s arm.
A tiny mark.
Barely visible.
But to him, it was enough.
“Nora.””
I stared at him.
“Did you touch her?””
The question felt like a slap.
“No.””
“Nora.””
“I said no.””
Selina immediately stepped forward.
“Julian, please.””
Her voice softened.
“I don’t want you two fighting because of me.””
I expected that to calm him.
Instead, it made him more protective.
He turned toward me.
“You’re telling me she walked into this house crying for no reason?””
“I’m telling you she’s lying.””
The second those words left my mouth, Julian’s expression changed.
“Careful.””
I froze.
“Careful?””
“Yes.””
He pointed toward Selina.
“She came here because she was scared.””
“No, she came here because she knew you would believe her.””
Selina gasped quietly.
Julian immediately moved between us.
That hurt more than I expected.
Not because he stepped in.
Because he stepped in for her.
“Nora,” he said coldly, “you need to apologize.””
I stared at him.
“You want me to apologize for something I didn’t do?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
No hesitation.
No doubt.
I felt something inside me crack.
“Julian, check the cameras.””
I pointed toward the security panel near the entrance.
“If you don’t believe me, check the footage. I haven’t left the house all day.””
For one second, I thought I saw uncertainty in his eyes.
Then Selina spoke.
“Please don’t.””
We both looked at her.
She wiped a tear from her cheek.
“I don’t want this to become worse.””
Julian softened immediately.
“I’m not letting anyone hurt you.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because he wasn’t talking about me.
He was talking about her.
I stepped backward.
“Julian, listen to yourself.””
His jaw tightened.
“Don’t make this about you.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
“About me?””
“Yes.””
He grabbed his phone from the table.
“You have been obsessed with Selina for years.””
I stared at him.
“I’m obsessed?””
“You always assume the worst.””
“Because every time something happens, you choose her.””
The room went quiet.
Selina looked away.
And that was when I noticed something.
A tiny smile.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She wasn’t scared.
She was satisfied.
Julian walked closer.
“If you ever go near Selina again, you’ll regret it.””
My chest tightened.
“Are you threatening me?””
“I’m warning you.””
“Your wife?””
His eyes didn’t soften.
“Someone has to make you understand.””
I looked at the man I married.
The man who once promised to protect me.
And suddenly, I didn’t recognize him.
I turned away.
“I’m going upstairs.””
But Julian grabbed my wrist.
Not hard enough to leave a mark.
Just enough to stop me.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you.””
I pulled my hand away.
“Don’t touch me.””
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Selina quietly said,
“Julian… maybe I should leave.””
He immediately turned toward her.
“No.””
One word.
One decision.
And I understood everything.
She had never been his past.
She had been waiting for her moment.
I walked toward the stairs, trying to keep my hands from shaking.
I knew I needed proof.
Not just for Julian.
For myself.
Because somewhere deep inside, I knew this wasn’t going to end with an apology.
When I reached the hallway, I looked down at my smartwatch.
A thought crossed my mind.
If Julian was willing to believe a lie this easily, what else was he capable of believing?
My fingers hovered over the screen.
Then I quietly tapped one button.
Record.
I didn’t know why I did it.
Maybe instinct.
Maybe fear.
Maybe because a small voice inside me knew I was standing at the edge of something dangerous.
I slipped my hand down and kept walking.
Behind me, Julian’s voice echoed.
“Nora, don’t walk away from me.””
I stopped.
Then I heard Selina whisper something.
Something that made my blood run cold.
“Julian… what if she tells people?””
There was a pause.
Then my husband answered.
“She won’t.””
I slowly turned my head.
Julian was looking directly at me.
And the expression on his face wasn’t anger anymore.
It was certainty.
As if he already knew how this story would end.
May you like
But what he didn’t know was that the truth had already started recording.
And three days later, when I woke up in an ICU bed, that tiny recording would become the only thing standing between me and the lie they created.
