Chapter 2: The Night Nobody Believed Me
The first thing I noticed when I opened my eyes was the silence.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind of silence that comes after something breaks.
I was sitting on the edge of our bed, staring at my smartwatch.
The tiny red recording symbol was still there.
My heart was pounding.
I didn’t know exactly what I had captured.
I didn’t know if it would prove anything.
But I knew one thing.
I no longer trusted the man sleeping in the room beside me.
Except Julian wasn’t beside me.
The bedroom door opened ten minutes later.
He walked in.
His expression was calm.
Almost too calm.
That scared me more than his anger.
“Are you still upset?”” he asked.
I looked at him.
Still upset.
That was how he saw it.
Not betrayed.
Not accused.
Not humiliated.
Just upset.
“I want to see the security footage.””
Julian stopped near the dresser.
“Again?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I almost laughed.
Because the answer was obvious.
“Because you accused me of attacking someone inside our own house.””
He sighed.
“Nora, this is exactly what I’m talking about.””
“What?””
“You always turn everything into a battle.””
I stared at him.
“I’m asking for proof.””
“You’re asking me to prove Selina is lying.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m asking you to prove I’m guilty.””
That sentence seemed to irritate him.
Because somewhere inside, he already knew he couldn’t.
Julian looked away.
“The cameras are being checked.””
“By who?””
“Our security team.””
“Why didn’t you check them yourself?””
His silence answered before he did.
“I trust my people.””
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
Three years of marriage.
Three years of knowing every expression on his face.
And I knew when he was avoiding something.
“Julian.””
He looked at me.
“What happened to the footage?””
His jaw tightened.
“Don’t start creating stories.””
“I asked a question.””
“And I answered.””
“No, you didn’t.””
The room became tense.
Then his phone rang.
The name on the screen appeared.
Selina.
I watched his face change.
It was subtle.
Most people would have missed it.
But I didn’t.
The anger disappeared.
The hardness disappeared.
For one second, he looked worried.
He answered immediately.
“Selina?””
I looked away.
I hated that I noticed.
I hated that after everything, some part of me still cared.
“Are you okay?””
A pause.
Then his voice softened.
“I’ll come down.””
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
“You’re leaving?””
“She’s shaken.””
I nodded slowly.
“Of course she is.””
“Nora.””
“No, it’s fine.””
I forced a smile.
“I understand.””
He frowned.
“You’re making this difficult.””
I looked at him.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Because he truly believed it.
“You know what’s difficult, Julian?””
He waited.
“Being accused by your own husband of something you didn’t do.””
His expression changed slightly.
But only slightly.
“I’m not accusing you.””
“You asked if I touched her.””
“Because there was evidence.””
“A scratch?””
His face hardened.
“You don’t get to decide what matters.””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“You decided that.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Julian grabbed his jacket.
“I need space.””
“From your wife?””
“From this argument.””
I watched him walk toward the door.
Before he left, he stopped.
“Nora.””
I looked up.
“If I find out you lied to me…”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then what?””
He didn’t answer.
He just walked away.
The door closed.
And for the first time in three years, I locked it behind him.
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat in the dark living room with my laptop open.
The house felt different.
It was still beautiful.
Still massive.
Still filled with expensive furniture and carefully designed rooms.
But it didn’t feel like home anymore.
It felt like a place where someone had been hiding something.
I connected my smartwatch to my laptop.
The file appeared.
A few seconds later, I pressed play.
At first, all I heard was silence.
Then voices.
Julian.
Selina.
My hands tightened around the edge of the desk.
I skipped forward.
I wanted the moment after I left.
The moment they thought they were alone.
Then I heard Selina.
“Do you think she believes you?””
I froze.
Julian answered.
“She’s emotional right now.””
My heartbeat increased.
Selina laughed softly.
“No. She’s suspicious.””
“She won’t do anything.””
“You sound very confident.””
“I know my wife.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
No.
He didn’t.
Then Selina spoke again.
“You always said you wanted a peaceful life.””
“I do.””
“With me?””
Silence.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
I held my breath.
Then Julian said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Selina…”
Her voice became softer.
“After all these years, are you really going to pretend?””
I stopped the recording.
I couldn’t listen.
Not yet.
Because hearing the truth was somehow worse than suspecting it.
I covered my mouth.
Three years.
Three years I had defended him.
Three years I had convinced myself I was imagining things.
But I wasn’t.
The next morning, Julian came home at seven.
I was already dressed.
I had spent the night thinking.
Thinking about the recording.
Thinking about Selina.
Thinking about how easily my husband had turned against me.
He walked into the kitchen.
For a moment, he looked surprised.
“You’re awake.””
“Yes.””
He glanced at the coffee machine.
“Did you sleep?””
“No.””
He looked uncomfortable.
Good.
For once, I wanted him to feel something.
“Nora…”
I raised my hand.
“Before you say anything, I want to ask one question.””
He stopped.
“Did you spend the night with Selina?””
His face changed.
Not anger.
Shock.
And that was enough.
“I can’t believe you would ask me that.””
“You didn’t answer.””
“Because the question is insulting.””
“Julian.””
I stared at him.
“Did you?””
He looked away.
That was the answer.
My throat tightened.
“She called you because she was scared.””
“Yes.””
“And you stayed with her.””
“She was alone.””
I laughed quietly.
“Interesting.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means when your wife is hurt, you need space.””
I stepped closer.
“But when she is upset, you run.””
His face darkened.
“That’s unfair.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s accurate.””
Julian placed his hands on the counter.
“You need to calm down.””
There it was.
The phrase men used when they didn’t want to hear the truth.
“I am calm.””
“No, you’re not.””
“I’m calm enough to know something is wrong.””
He stared at me.
“What are you accusing me of?””
I almost told him.
I almost said:
I heard everything.
I have proof.
I know about you and Selina.
But something stopped me.
A feeling.
A warning.
Because people who are caught often become desperate.
And Julian Vance was not a man who handled losing control well.
So I smiled.
“I’m accusing you of forgetting who your wife is.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“I spent years choosing you.””
My voice became quieter.
“I gave up my career. I moved my entire life for you. I defended you when people questioned your character.””
I looked toward the doorway.
“And the first time another woman points at me, you believe her.””
His expression softened for half a second.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked down.
A message.
From Selina.
I saw her name.
And I saw his reaction.
Instant concern.
Instant attention.
I didn’t need to read the message.
I already knew.
“She needs you again?””
Julian locked his phone.
“This isn’t the time.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“You’re right.””
I picked up my coffee.
“This is exactly the time.””
He looked at me.
“What are you talking about?””
I held his gaze.
“Nothing.””
But inside, I made a decision.
I wasn’t going to fight Selina.
I wasn’t going to beg Julian.
I was going to find out exactly how deep this went.
And when I had enough proof, I would make sure neither of them could rewrite the story.
That afternoon, I received an email from the security company.
My hands trembled when I opened it.
The message contained only one sentence.
*“Mrs. Vance, we reviewed the footage you requested. There is something you need to see immediately.””*
Attached was a video file.
Recorded from the camera near our front gate.
I clicked it.
And within five seconds, I saw something that made my blood turn cold.
Selina had not walked into my house crying.
May you like
She had arrived smiling.
And she wasn’t alone.
