Chapter 8: The Secret Megan Was Protecting
Nobody moved.
Not after the message.
Not after Megan’s expression changed.
Because the moment I looked up from my phone and saw her smiling, I understood something.
She wasn’t surprised.
She wasn’t confused.
She knew.
“You sent that,” I said.
Megan tilted her head.
“Sent what?””
I held up my phone.
“The message.””
Her eyes flickered toward the screen.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Ryan noticed too.
“You knew someone was going to contact her?””
Megan looked at him.
“You always were better at noticing things when it was too late.””
His face tightened.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act like this is everyone else’s fault.””
For the first time, Megan looked annoyed.
Not hurt.
Not emotional.
Annoyed.
Like people were ruining the story she had prepared.
Daniel stepped forward.
“What secret are you hiding?””
Megan looked at him.
A strange sadness crossed her face.
“You still think I’m the only one with secrets.””
The words landed heavily.
I felt my chest tighten.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“Ask your husband.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
Megan smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“That look.””
She pointed at him.
“The same look you had when you knew you were hiding something.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“What is she talking about?””
“Claire.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m tired of hearing half-truths.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
That silence hurt more than anything.
Megan noticed.
Of course she did.
She always noticed weakness.
“You see?””
She looked at me.
“I told you.””
“Told me what?””
“That he’s not as honest as you think.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“You’re enjoying this.””
Megan looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m finally telling the truth.””
I almost laughed.
The phrase sounded ridiculous coming from her.
But then Daniel spoke.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was different.
Not defensive.
Not afraid.
Angry.
“Megan, whatever you’re trying to do, stop.””
She stared at him.
“Whatever I’m trying to do?””
“Yes.””
He pointed at the folder.
“At first, I thought you made a mistake.””
Her face changed slightly.
“I thought you got too close. I thought you didn’t understand boundaries.””
He shook his head.
“But this?””
He looked around the room.
“This is intentional.””
Megan didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“You didn’t just want me.””
That sentence made her eyes narrow.
“You wanted my life.””
The room went quiet.
For a moment, I thought she would deny it.
Instead, she smiled.
“You finally understand.””
Ryan looked devastated.
“Megan.””
She turned toward him.
“What?””
“Why?””
The question sounded different coming from him.
Not angry.
Broken.
“Why did you do this?””
Megan looked at her husband.
The man who had stood beside her for years.
And for the first time, I saw something almost human in her expression.
Pain.
“I got tired.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Tired of what?””
“Being the person everyone called when they needed something.””
She laughed quietly.
“But never the person anyone chose.””
I stared at her.
There it was.
The wound underneath everything.
Not an excuse.
Not forgiveness.
But the reason.
She had spent years looking at other people’s lives and seeing proof that she was losing.
And instead of building her own happiness, she decided someone else had too much.
“I was your best friend,” I said.
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Her eyes softened.
“Because you had everything I wanted.””
My throat tightened.
“Megan…”
“You had Daniel.””
A pause.
“You had friends who loved you.””
Another.
“You had people who showed up for you.””
She looked away.
“I was always the backup person.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not true.””
“Yes, it is.””
“No.””
My voice became firmer.
“You decided that was true.””
She looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the girl I used to know.
The girl who helped me study.
The girl who stayed up all night before my wedding.
The girl who cried with me.
Then it disappeared.
“I spent twelve years watching you get chosen,” she whispered.
“And I spent twelve years choosing you.””
The words seemed to hit her.
But only briefly.
Then her expression hardened again.
“Maybe that’s why it hurt more.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel asked:
“What is the other secret?””
Megan looked at him.
“What?””
“The one you keep mentioning.””
She smiled.
“You really don’t remember?””
My heart sank.
Daniel looked confused.
“Megan.””
She stepped closer.
“Three years ago.””
The room went still.
“You told Claire you were working late.””
Daniel froze.
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at Megan.
“No.””
Her smile widened.
“You remember.””
My pulse increased.
“What happened three years ago?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was working late.””
Megan laughed.
“Not the whole night.””
“Stop.””
“Tell her.””
Daniel’s face was pale.
I felt sick.
“Daniel?””
He rubbed his face.
“I met Megan.””
“When?””
“After work.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed advice.””
Megan interrupted.
“He came because he cared.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Don’t twist it.””
“Did I?””
Silence.
I looked between them.
“Where did you meet?””
“A coffee shop.””
“And?””
“We talked.””
“How long?””
Daniel hesitated.
“An hour.””
My stomach tightened.
“Anything else?””
“No.””
Megan laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“You see? That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“He thinks not cheating is enough.””
Daniel looked angry.
“Because it is.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not when someone is emotionally leaving.””
I stared at her.
“You’re saying he left me?””
“I’m saying he was unhappy.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire, that’s not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“I was stressed.””
I waited.
“You were dealing with your mom’s health. I was overwhelmed with work. I felt like I was failing everyone.””
My heart softened slightly.
Because I remembered that time.
I remembered how hard it was.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“But I never wanted someone else.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me you were struggling?””
He looked down.
“Because I thought I had to be strong.””
And there it was.
Not betrayal.
But a crack.
A place where Megan had inserted herself.
She didn’t create the distance.
She found it.
And she used it.
Megan watched us.
Then said quietly:
“See?””
Nobody answered.
She picked up her purse.
“You can blame me all you want.””
Ryan shook his head.
“I do blame you.””
She looked at him.
“You should blame yourself too.””
His face fell.
“For loving someone who was never enough for me?””
The words were cruel.
Even Megan seemed surprised by how harsh they sounded.
Then she walked toward the door.
But before leaving, she stopped beside me.
“You want to know the funniest part?””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“I never had to convince Daniel to leave you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
She smiled.
“He was already unhappy.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“That’s not true.””
Megan opened the door.
“Maybe.””
She looked back.
“Or maybe you’re only saying that now because she’s listening.””
Then she left.
The apartment fell silent.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ryan’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then all the color drained from his face.
He looked at me.
“Claire…”
“What?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“The person who sent you that message…”
I waited.
“Wasn’t warning you about Megan.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
Ryan swallowed.
“They were warning you about Daniel.””
Daniel stood up.
“What?””
Ryan looked terrified.
“I just got a message from the same number.””
He turned the phone around.
May you like
The screen showed one sentence.
*Ask Claire why Daniel deleted the first message Megan ever sent him.*
