Chapter 6: The Recording She Never Meant Me to Hear
The file sat on my phone for almost a minute.
Neither of us touched it.
It was only a few seconds long.
A simple audio attachment.
But it felt heavier than anything I had held before.
Because sometimes the truth isn’t scary because you don’t know it.
It’s scary because some part of you already does.
Daniel sat on the edge of the couch, staring at the screen.
“You don’t have to listen to it.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because I know what happened.””
“That’s exactly why I need to hear it.””
He closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent months believing I was imagining things.””
My voice became quieter.
“I defended her.””
I looked at the phone.
“I defended her to myself.””
Daniel didn’t speak.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only background noise.
A hospital hallway.
Distant footsteps.
A cart rolling across the floor.
Then Megan’s voice.
Soft.
Gentle.
The same voice I had trusted for twelve years.
“You look exhausted.””
Daniel’s voice followed.
“I’m fine.””
A pause.
“You always say that.””
Another pause.
“I mean it, Megan. I’m okay.””
She laughed quietly.
“You’re terrible at admitting when you need someone.””
My stomach tightened.
The recording continued.
“I’m here, Daniel.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice changed slightly.
Not dramatic.
Not obvious.
Just enough.
“I don’t think Claire understands how much pressure you’re under.””
My breathing stopped.
Daniel’s recorded voice became firmer.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Talk about my wife.””
“I’m just saying what you won’t.””
A long silence.
Then Megan said:
“You deserve someone who sees you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked sick.
The recording continued.
“Megan, stop.””
“Why?””
“Because this isn’t appropriate.””
“Because you don’t feel the same?””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
“No.””
For one second, I felt relief.
A tiny piece of my heart unclenched.
Then Megan spoke again.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel’s recorded voice became sharper.
“I’m not.””
“You don’t think about what life would be like if things were different?””
“No.””
“Not even once?””
“No.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Then Megan whispered:
“You’re going to regret choosing someone who doesn’t appreciate you.””
The recording ended.
The room stayed quiet.
I stared at the phone.
That was it.
Not a confession from Daniel.
Not a secret relationship.
But something else.
Something I hadn’t expected.
The truth.
Megan had been trying to create a story where she was the woman who saved him.
The woman who understood him.
The woman who deserved him.
And Daniel had spent months pretending it would disappear.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“I know you said no.””
His voice cracked.
“But I should have understood how serious it was.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I was still stuck on one thing.
The recording.
“Who sent this?””
Daniel looked at my phone.
“I don’t know.””
“Someone had it.””
“Yes.””
“Someone knew.””
He nodded.
My mind immediately went back to Ryan.
His exhausted face.
The way he looked at Megan.
Like he had been watching this happen for a long time.
I called him.
He answered after the second ring.
“Claire?””
His voice sounded tired.
“Did you send me the recording?””
A pause.
“No.””
“Do you know who did?””
Another pause.
“I thought someone might.””
I stood up.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan sighed.
“Megan records things.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Not everything.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
His voice lowered.
“But she keeps things.””
“Like evidence?””
He was quiet.
“Yes.””
The word sent a chill through me.
“Ryan, what else does she have?””
“I don’t know.””
“Think.””
“I’m trying.””
I heard him take a breath.
“There was a box.””
“A box?””
“She kept old messages. Screenshots. Photos.””
“Why?””
“She said someday she would need to prove people were wrong about her.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
“Where is this box?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
“Ryan.””
“I don’t know.””
“Please.””
His voice became softer.
“Claire, be careful.””
The warning made me tense.
“Why?””
“Because when Megan feels like she’s losing control, she does things she normally wouldn’t.””
“What things?””
Silence.
Then:
“She threatens to reveal secrets.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“What secrets?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
After the call ended, Daniel looked at me.
“We need to stop this.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
But stopping Megan wasn’t going to be simple.
Because she wasn’t just someone who made a mistake.
She had built a version of reality where she was the victim.
And people like that rarely surrender their story.
The next morning, I woke up to forty-seven notifications.
Most were from friends.
Some were from family.
At first, I thought they were checking on me.
Then I opened the first message.
*Are you okay? I heard what happened.*
Another:
*I can’t believe you accused Megan like that.*
I froze.
I opened another.
*She said you humiliated her publicly.*
My heart sank.
Megan had already started.
Before I had even woken up, she had rewritten the night.
I scrolled.
A message from Olivia appeared.
*Claire, don’t respond to anyone yet. She’s posting things.*
I opened social media.
And there she was.
Megan.
Smiling in a photo from years ago.
The caption was long.
Too long.
*Sometimes the people closest to you become the ones who hurt you the most.*
I felt sick.
She hadn’t named me.
She didn’t need to.
Everyone who knew us knew.
The comments were already filled.
Some people defended her.
Some asked questions.
Some clearly believed her.
Daniel sat beside me.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
His expression darkened.
“She’s making you look like the villain.””
“Yes.””
“I’ll respond.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Claire—”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Not yet.””
He frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she wants a fight.””
I looked at Megan’s post.
“She wants me angry. She wants me emotional. She wants everyone to see me reacting instead of seeing what she did.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he nodded.
“You’re right.””
That was when my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
“Claire?””
I recognized it.
Ryan.
“Where are you?””
His breathing sounded uneven.
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
My grip tightened.
“What?””
“A second folder.””
My heart started pounding.
“Where?””
“In Megan’s apartment.””
“Why were you there?””
A pause.
“Because I finally realized I wasn’t the first person she tried to replace.””
I stood.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“There are files about other people.””
“What people?””
“Friends.””
“Family.””
“Everyone who ever made her feel less important.””
I felt a chill.
“Ryan, what is in the folder about me?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“Claire…”
“What?””
“She didn’t just plan how to get Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“What else did she plan?””
His voice became almost a whisper.
“She planned what would happen after.””
I gripped the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan exhaled.
“She wrote down exactly how she wanted you to react.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she wanted everyone to think you were unstable.””
The room went quiet.
Then Ryan said the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“She wasn’t planning to steal your husband.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was planning to make you lose him.””
