Chapter 5: The Plan Hidden in Plain Sight

I read the sentence three times.

Not because I didn’t understand it.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

*Once Daniel believes Claire is the reason he’s unhappy, he’ll finally see who has been standing beside him all along.*

The words looked different every time.

The first time, I felt shock.

The second time, I felt anger.

The third time, I felt something much colder.

Clarity.

For months, I had been wondering if I was imagining things.

If I was being too sensitive.

If I had overreacted at the restaurant.

But this wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t a joke.

This was a plan.

I looked at Olivia.

“Where did you get this?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Megan left her laptop in my car.””

“Why?””

“After dinner, she asked me to drive her because she said she was too upset to go home.””

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Even after everything, she had found a way to make herself the victim.

“She was upset?””

Olivia looked ashamed.

“I know how that sounds.””

“No.””

I folded the paper carefully.

“I want to know exactly what happened.””

Olivia stepped inside.

Daniel closed the door behind her.

Nobody spoke for a few seconds.

The house felt different.

Like a place where secrets had been hiding in the walls.

“Megan called me from the parking lot,” Olivia said.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She wanted me to come outside.””

I frowned.

“What did she say?””

Olivia looked at Daniel.

“She said you had embarrassed her.””

I nodded slowly.

“Of course she did.””

“She told me you were insecure and that you were ruining the friendship.””

I looked at the email again.

“And you believed her?””

Olivia looked down.

“At first.””

The honesty surprised me.

But I appreciated it.

“Why?””

“Because Megan is good at making things sound reasonable.””

She paused.

“She didn’t say, ‘I sat on Claire’s husband’s lap and she got upset.’”

Olivia shook her head.

“She said, ‘Claire attacked me because she’s threatened by my friendship with Daniel.’”

My stomach turned.

That was exactly what Megan wanted everyone to think.

Not that she had crossed a line.

That I was the problem for noticing.

“What happened after she left your car?”” I asked.

Olivia hesitated.

“She forgot her laptop.””

“And?””

“I opened it because I wanted to find her address.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You read her email?””

Olivia looked guilty.

“I know I shouldn’t have.””

Normally, I would have agreed.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, privacy felt like a strange word coming from people who had spent months hiding things from me.

“What did you find?””

Olivia looked at the page.

“This.””

She pointed.

“She had several drafts.””

“Drafts?””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

Olivia’s face tightened.

“About you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What kind of drafts?””

She pulled out her phone.

“I took pictures because I didn’t know what else to do.””

She showed us.

There were multiple documents.

One was titled:

*Conversation Ideas.*

Another:

*Things Claire Doesn’t Understand About Daniel.*

And another:

*How To Make Him See The Truth.*

I felt sick.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“She wrote this?””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

He took the phone.

His expression changed as he scrolled.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he read one line aloud.

“‘Don’t attack Claire directly. She’ll become defensive. Make Daniel feel like he has to protect you.’”

The room went silent.

I sat down.

The worst part wasn’t that Megan wanted Daniel.

The worst part was how carefully she had studied us.

She knew exactly what buttons to push.

She knew exactly how to make him feel needed.

She knew exactly how to make me look unreasonable.

“She was manipulating both of us,” Olivia whispered.

I looked at her.

“Why are you showing me this now?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I should have said something sooner.””

I didn’t respond.

She looked at Daniel.

“I saw things.””

Daniel frowned.

“What things?””

“Megan touching your arm.””

His face changed.

“At dinner?””

“No.””

Olivia shook her head.

“Before.””

“When?””

“Different times.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Different times?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t notice.””

Olivia gave a sad smile.

“That’s the problem.””

She sat down.

“Daniel, you’re a good person. That’s why this worked.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“What do you mean?””

“She knew you wouldn’t assume the worst.””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

Daniel wasn’t the kind of person who looked for betrayal.

He looked for excuses.

He gave people the benefit of the doubt.

Sometimes too much.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Megan.

I almost didn’t open it.

But I did.

*I heard Olivia is involved now.*

My heart dropped.

How did she know?

Another message came.

*You’re turning everyone against me.*

Then another.

*You really want to destroy twelve years of friendship over one misunderstanding?*

I stared at the screen.

One misunderstanding.

That phrase.

She kept using it.

Like repeating it enough times would make it true.

I typed a response.

Then deleted it.

Typed again.

Deleted again.

Finally, I locked my phone.

I wasn’t going to argue with someone who had already written a script.

Daniel sat beside me.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have stopped talking to her after the first time she crossed a line.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I know sorry doesn’t fix this.””

“No.””

My voice softened.

“It doesn’t.””

He nodded.

May you like

“I don’t expect you to forgive me immediately.””
