Chapter 7: The Woman Who Wrote My Breakdown

Ryan sent me the address.

I stared at the message for almost a minute.

Not because I didn’t want to go.

Because a part of me was terrified of what I would find.

There is a strange kind of fear that comes when someone has been part of your life for so long.

A stranger hurting you is painful.

But someone who knows your favorite coffee order, your childhood stories, your biggest insecurities, and the exact words that can break your heart?

That kind of betrayal feels personal.

Megan didn’t just know me.

She studied me.

Daniel noticed the look on my face.

“What did Ryan say?””

I locked my phone.

“He found something.””

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Evidence.””

His expression tightened.

“Where?””

“Megan’s apartment.””

He stood immediately.

“I’m coming with you.””

I hesitated.

Not because I didn’t want him there.

Because I wasn’t sure what I would feel when we saw more proof.

Part of me still wanted the story to end.

I wanted there to be one final misunderstanding.

One explanation.

One thing that would make everything less ugly.

But deep down, I knew better.

“Okay,” I said.

Twenty minutes later, we were standing outside Megan’s apartment building.

Ryan was waiting near the entrance.

I barely recognized him.

The confident, joking man who used to make everyone laugh at dinner was gone.

He looked exhausted.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for years.

“Claire.””

He nodded at me.

“Thank you for coming.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What did you find?””

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“Before I show you, I need you both to understand something.””

“What?””

“Megan doesn’t see herself as the bad person.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make what she did okay.””

“I know.””

Ryan looked down.

“But it explains why she’s dangerous.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Ryan met his eyes.

“I’m not insulting her.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m telling you what I learned after eight years of marriage.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan unlocked the apartment door.

The place looked normal.

That was the worst part.

A warm apartment.

Pictures on the walls.

Plants by the windows.

A stack of books on the coffee table.

A person’s life.

Nothing about the room looked like the home of someone who had been secretly planning to destroy another person’s marriage.

But then Ryan walked toward a cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside was a small black box.

My heart sank.

“The box.””

Ryan nodded.

“I found it after she left last night.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You went through her things?””

“I know.””

Ryan swallowed.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“After what we’ve seen, I understand.””

Ryan opened the box.

Inside were folders.

Dozens of them.

Each labeled with names.

My hands went cold.

“How many?””

Ryan shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

He picked up one.

“This one is Olivia.””

Another.

“Jenna.””

Another.

A different name.

“People from college.””

I stared.

“What are these?””

Ryan opened Olivia’s folder.

Inside were screenshots.

Messages.

Notes.

Observations.

I felt sick.

“She collected information?””

Ryan nodded.

“She called it understanding people.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“This is not normal.””

“No,” Ryan said.

“It isn’t.””

Then he picked up another folder.

And I saw my name.

*CLAIRE.*

The room became silent.

I reached for it.

Ryan hesitated.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes.””

I took it.

The folder was heavier than it should have been.

Inside were pages.

Handwritten notes.

Printed conversations.

Old photos.

My entire friendship with Megan reduced to a collection of information.

I flipped through the pages.

The first note was dated two years earlier.

*Claire’s biggest fear: being abandoned.*

I stopped.

Another:

*Claire needs reassurance. She will question herself before questioning others.*

My throat tightened.

Another:

*When hurt, Claire becomes emotional. People listen less when she cries.*

I looked up.

“She wrote this?””

Ryan nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

I kept reading.

It wasn’t just observations.

It was strategy.

*Do not attack Claire directly. She will defend herself.*

*Make her feel like she is overreacting.*

*Use the word jealous. It makes her doubt herself.*

My hands started shaking.

Because those weren’t guesses.

Those were exactly the things she had done.

Daniel took the papers from me.

His face changed as he read.

“She planned this.””

“Yes,” Ryan whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

Because there was one painful truth.

Megan knew how to hurt me.

But Daniel had still given her the opportunity.

I turned the page.

Then I saw something that made me stop.

A timeline.

Dates.

Events.

The first one was from months ago.

*Step one: Increase emotional dependence.*

My breathing became shallow.

The next line:

*Step two: Create distance between Claire and Daniel.*

Then:

*Step three: Wait for the right moment.*

I looked at Ryan.

“What is the right moment?””

His face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

I turned the page.

And there it was.

*Birthday dinner.*

The date.

The restaurant.

The exact night.

My fingers went numb.

“She planned the dinner?””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

“Then how?””

“She didn’t plan the dinner.””

He pointed to the page.

“She planned what she would do during it.””

I read the notes.

*Public action creates emotional reaction.*

*Claire will confront.*

*Daniel will feel pressured.*

*Friends will choose sides.*

I couldn’t believe it.

She had predicted everything.

Except one thing.

She underestimated me.

She underestimated how quickly the truth would come out.

A sound came from the hallway.

All of us froze.

Ryan looked toward the door.

“Did you lock it?””

“Yes.””

Footsteps stopped outside.

Then the handle moved.

Someone was trying to open the door.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Who is it?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A familiar one.

“Megan.””

Ryan looked shocked.

“What is she doing here?””

Nobody answered.

The door opened slowly.

Megan stood there.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t angry.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

Her eyes moved around the room.

Then landed on the folder in my hands.

For the first time since this began, I saw something real on her face.

Fear.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“You went through my things.””

I stared at her.

“You planned this.””

She smiled slightly.

“Did Ryan tell you that?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Megan ignored him.

“Claire, you have no idea what you’re looking at.””

I held up the folder.

“I know exactly what I’m looking at.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You think you do.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes moved to him.

And something changed.

“You’re asking me why?””

“Yes.””

She laughed softly.

“After everything, you still don’t understand?””

“No.””

Her smile faded.

“Because I spent years watching everyone get the things they didn’t deserve.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“People like you.””

The words were quiet.

Almost sad.

“You always had someone choosing you.””

My heart tightened.

“Megan…”

“No.””

She stepped inside.

“You had Daniel.””

A pause.

“You had the perfect wedding.””

Another.

“You had the life everyone wanted.””

I stared at her.

“And you thought you deserved it?””

Her expression hardened.

“I thought I deserved a chance.””

The room went silent.

Daniel shook his head.

“Megan, this isn’t a chance.””

“Then what is it?””

“A betrayal.””

For a moment, she looked hurt.

Then she looked at me.

“You know what the worst part is?””

I said nothing.

She smiled.

“You still think this is about Daniel.””

A chill ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

She took a step closer.

“It was never just about him.””

I gripped the folder.

“Then what was it about?””

Megan looked at the pages.

Then at me.

“I wanted you to finally understand what it feels like…”

She paused.

“To lose everything.””

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*You need to leave now. Megan isn’t the only person who knows the truth.*

I looked up.

But Megan was already smiling.

May you like

Because somehow…

She knew I had received it.
