Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The phone kept ringing.

Megan’s name glowed across my screen like a warning.

For a few seconds, neither Daniel nor I moved.

The sound filled the kitchen.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, I answered.

I didn’t say hello.

Neither did she.

“Claire,” Megan said softly.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

Not anger.

Not yelling.

Softness.

The same gentle voice she used when she wanted people to believe she was the reasonable one.

“Where did you get the picture?”” I asked.

There was a pause.

A tiny pause.

But it was enough.

Because Megan was never caught off guard.

She always had something ready to say.

“Daniel showed you, didn’t he?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

Another pause.

“Then someone else did.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Megan.””

“What?””

“Stop playing games.””

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“Games?””

“Yes.””

“You’re really going to accuse me of playing games after everything tonight?””

I closed my eyes.

This was how she worked.

She didn’t answer questions.

She changed the subject.

She moved the focus.

She made you defend yourself.

“What happened in that picture?””

“You mean the picture of two friends outside a hospital?””

I froze.

She knew exactly which picture it was.

“Why were you standing so close to him?””

“Because he was upset.””

“Why?””

“Because your husband was having a difficult time.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

That hurt.

Because even if nothing happened, there was still a secret.

There was still a part of my marriage I hadn’t been allowed to see.

“Megan, why do you have that picture?””

Her voice became colder.

“Because I was there when your husband needed someone.””

My stomach twisted.

“And I wasn’t?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was worse than anything.

“You know what’s funny?”” Megan continued.

“What?””

“You keep acting like I’m the problem.””

I laughed quietly.

“I saw you sitting on my husband’s lap.””

“And I apologized.””

“No, you didn’t.””

“I explained.””

“You blamed me.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Make yourself the victim.””

The irony was almost impossible to process.

I walked away from Daniel and toward the living room.

“You’re the one who crossed a boundary.””

“I sat on a chair.””

“You sat on my husband.””

“Because we were laughing.””

“Because you wanted a reaction.””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Megan said:

“You know what Daniel told me once?””

I stopped.

“What?””

“He said you were impossible to talk to when you were upset.””

My chest tightened.

I looked back at Daniel.

His expression changed.

“Megan,” he said quietly.

She heard him.

“You’re there?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Her tone changed immediately.

“You should hear this too.””

Daniel walked closer.

“Megan, stop.””

But she continued.

“I spent months helping you when Claire was busy.””

My face burned.

“Busy?””

“You were dealing with your mother. I understood that. But Daniel was alone.””

I stared at the wall.

There it was.

The story she had created.

A story where she was the hero.

Where I was the wife who failed.

Where she was the woman who stepped in.

“I was at the hospital,” I said.

“And he was struggling.””

“He was my husband.””

“And I was his friend.””

“No.””

My voice became firmer.

“You were trying to become something else.””

There was silence.

Then Megan whispered:

“Be careful.””

The warning in her voice made me uneasy.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

A pause.

“It’s advice.””

I almost laughed.

“From you?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“Ask Daniel what he said when I told him I loved him.””

The room went completely still.

I turned toward him.

Daniel’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Megan.””

“Tell her.””

He didn’t respond.

“Tell your wife.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What is she talking about?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Not again.””

He stopped.

“I need the truth.””

Megan was silent on the phone.

Waiting.

Almost enjoying it.

Daniel looked devastated.

“She said it.””

“What?””

“She told me she loved me.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I sat down.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Again.

That same answer.

I covered my mouth.

Because I didn’t trust myself to speak.

On the phone, Megan said:

“See?””

I looked at the screen.

“What?””

“You’re angry at the wrong person.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You confessed your feelings to my husband.””

“And he rejected me.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Like she had been waiting to say it.

“Then why are you doing this?””

“Because I’m tired.””

“Tired of what?””

“Tired of pretending I don’t know what everyone knows.””

I stood up.

“What does everyone know?””

“That you and Daniel aren’t as happy as you pretend.””

My hands started shaking.

“Megan, you don’t know anything about my marriage.””

“I know more than you think.””

The call ended.

Just like that.

No goodbye.

No apology.

No explanation.

I stood there staring at my phone.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me everything.””

He nodded slowly.

“I should have.””

“Yes.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of hurting you.””

I laughed.

The sound came out broken.

“You thought hiding it would hurt less?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I thought if I ignored it, it would disappear.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But beneath the anger was something worse.

Disappointment.

Because Megan had betrayed me.

But Daniel had given her space to do it.

“What happened when she said she loved you?””

Daniel sat down.

“She came over.””

I froze.

“She came here?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

I stared at him.

“In our house?””

“She said she needed to talk.””

“And you let her in?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she was your best friend.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

That was why he trusted her.

That was why I trusted her.

She used the safest door into our lives.

“She sat right there,” Daniel said, pointing toward the couch.

I looked.

“She told me she had feelings for me.””

“What did you say?””

“I told her she was confused.””

“And?””

“I told her I loved my wife.””

A small part of me wanted to believe that.

Wanted to hold onto it.

But then I remembered the secrets.

The calls.

The hospital picture.

The lap.

The months of hidden conversations.

“What happened after?””

“She got angry.””

“Angry?””

“She said I was pretending.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“She said you didn’t appreciate me.””

My jaw tightened.

“She said I was lucky she was there.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I told her to leave.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she think she still had a chance?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because there was another piece.

There was always another piece.

Before I could ask again, there was a knock at the door.

Both of us froze.

It was almost midnight.

Nobody came over at midnight.

Daniel walked toward the entrance.

“Who is it?””

A voice answered from the other side.

A woman’s voice.

Not Megan.

“Claire?””

I recognized it immediately.

I opened the door before Daniel could stop me.

Standing there was Olivia.

Her eyes were red.

She held something in her hand.

A small envelope.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at the envelope.

“What is that?””

Olivia swallowed.

“I found it in my car.””

“Why do you have something for me?””

She looked terrified.

“Because Megan asked me to destroy it.””

My blood went cold.

“What is it?””

Olivia handed it to me.

“I don’t know everything inside.””

I opened the envelope slowly.

Inside was a printed message.

An email.

From Megan.

To someone whose name I didn’t recognize.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*I know Claire trusts me, which is why this will work.*

I looked at Olivia.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“That’s the part I was afraid to tell you.””

I looked back down at the page.

The next sentence waited underneath.

*Once Daniel believes Claire is the reason he’s unhappy, he’ll finally see who has been standing beside him all along.*
