Chapter 3: The Secret Between Them

The drive home was silent.

Not peaceful silence.

Not the kind where two people are comfortable enough to sit together without speaking.

This was the kind of silence that filled every corner of the car and made it impossible to breathe.

Daniel drove with both hands locked tightly around the steering wheel.

I sat in the passenger seat staring out the window, watching the city lights blur past us.

Every few seconds, I wanted to ask.

Every few seconds, I stopped myself.

Because I was afraid of the answer.

Finally, when we were only a few blocks from home, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“What happened?””

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t say my name like that. Don’t try to soften it.””

He swallowed.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt more than if he had lied.

“When were you planning on telling me, Daniel?””

“I don’t know.””

The honesty almost made me angry.

“You don’t know?””

He pulled into our driveway and turned off the engine.

The house was dark.

The same house where we had built our life.

The same house where I had believed there were no secrets.

“I should have told you months ago,” he said quietly.

I looked at him.

“Then tell me now.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a few seconds, he looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not exactly.

More like someone who had been carrying a heavy box for too long and finally realized he couldn’t carry it anymore.

“It happened last year.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened last year?””

He looked down.

“Your mom had surgery.””

I froze.

The memory came back instantly.

The weeks of fear.

The hospital visits.

The nights I barely slept because I was terrified something would happen to her.

Daniel had been incredible during that time.

He cooked.

He drove me to appointments.

He sat beside me in hospital waiting rooms.

“I don’t understand.””

“Megan helped me.””

The words landed strangely.

“Helped you?””

Daniel nodded.

“During the worst week, when you were staying at the hospital overnight, I had a problem at work. A major one.””

I remembered.

He had told me his company was going through a crisis.

But he said it was handled.

“I was overwhelmed,” he continued.

“I wasn’t sleeping. I was barely eating. I was trying to support you and keep everything together.””

“And Megan?””

“She noticed.””

I stared at him.

“Of course she did.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire…”

“No. Keep going.””

He sighed.

“She started checking in.””

My chest tightened.

“Checking in how?””

“Texts. Calls.””

“How often?””

He hesitated.

“Every day.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Every day?””

“Yes.””

“And you never thought to mention that?””

“I didn’t think it was important.””

I looked at him.

“Your wife was sleeping on a hospital chair next to her mother’s bed, and my best friend was calling you every day?””

He looked away.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“It sounds exactly like what it was.””

Daniel shook his head.

“It wasn’t an affair.””

“I didn’t say it was.””

“But you’re thinking it.””

I looked at him.

“I’m thinking I trusted both of you.””

The words seemed to hurt him.

Good.

Because I was hurting.

He leaned back against the seat.

“One night, after I had a terrible day, Megan called.””

“What happened?””

“She asked if I was okay.””

I waited.

“She said I sounded different.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Different?””

“She said I sounded like someone who was tired of being forgotten.””

I felt a cold feeling spread through me.

Because I knew that sentence.

Not because Daniel had said it.

Because Megan loved using words that sounded caring while hiding something underneath.

“What did you say?””

“I told her that wasn’t true.””

“And?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She said, ‘You don’t have to defend her every time.’”

I looked away.

A horrible picture was forming.

“She was planting something.””

“I know that now.””

“Did you know then?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I got out of the car.

Daniel followed me into the house.

The silence inside felt worse than the restaurant.

Our wedding photo sat on the shelf near the entrance.

Me in my dress.

Daniel in his suit.

Megan standing beside me as my maid of honor.

A memory that once felt beautiful now felt confusing.

I picked up the photo frame.

“She was there.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

“She stood next to me when I promised to love you forever.””

My voice shook.

“She smiled in every picture.””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“I’m sorry.””

I put it down.

“I need the whole truth.””

“You have it.””

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“I don’t.””

He stayed quiet.

“Megan said something about becoming your emergency contact.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“You know what she means.””

He sat down on the couch.

“After your mom’s surgery, there was one night when I had a panic attack.””

I blinked.

“You never told me that.””

“I didn’t want to worry you.””

I stared at him.

“You told Megan?””

“She called.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angry.

“You don’t know why my best friend was the person you called when you were falling apart?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t call her. She called me.””

“And you answered.””

“Yes.””

“And talked to her.””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

He was quiet.

“Daniel.””

“Almost an hour.””

I felt my throat tighten.

An hour.

While I was sitting in a hospital room.

While I was terrified.

While I thought my husband and I were facing everything together.

“What happened after that?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“The next morning, she said something strange.””

“What?””

“She said, ‘If Claire wasn’t ready for all of this, you’d have someone who understands you better.’”

My heart sank.

“And what did you say?””

“I told her that was inappropriate.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Because he knew there was no good reason.

I walked to the kitchen and poured myself water.

My hands were shaking.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From Megan.

I almost didn’t open it.

Almost.

But curiosity won.

*You’re probably hearing a very edited version of what happened.*

Another message appeared.

*Ask Daniel what he said to me that night.*

My heartbeat changed.

I looked at Daniel.

He had seen my expression.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

His face went pale.

“What did you say to her?””

“I didn’t say anything.””

“Megan says you did.””

“She’s manipulating you.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel stood up.

“I told her I appreciated her being there.””

I waited.

“And?””

He looked away.

“I told her she was a good friend.””

I stared.

“That’s it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

His silence answered.

I walked closer.

“What did she think you meant?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She thought I was giving her permission to be closer.””

The room went quiet.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“She told me later that night that she knew our marriage wouldn’t last forever.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she said she had been waiting for the right moment.””

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Megan.

It was a photo.

From an unknown number.

My hands went cold as I opened it.

It was a picture of Daniel.

And Megan.

Together.

Not at the restaurant.

Not from that night.

An old picture.

They were standing outside a hospital.

Close.

Too close.

Underneath the photo was one sentence:

*You deserve to know what happened after this picture was taken.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked like he already knew who sent it.

“Who is this?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

May you like

And my heart stopped.

It was Megan.
