Chapter 2: The Words I Was Never Supposed to Hear

“She said she wanted to know what it felt like to be the woman beside him.””

Jenna’s voice was barely above a whisper.

But I heard every word.

The cold night air suddenly felt heavier.

I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh.

To tell me she was exaggerating.

To say she had misunderstood.

Because the alternative was too painful.

“What exactly did she say?”” I asked.

Jenna looked uncomfortable.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I need to know.””

She glanced at Daniel, then back at me.

“I was sitting two seats away from Megan. When you went to the restroom, she leaned toward Daniel.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“What did Daniel do?””

“He looked uncomfortable,” Jenna said quickly.

“He actually told her to stop joking around.””

That gave me a tiny moment of relief.

A tiny piece of hope.

“And then?””

Jenna looked down.

“Megan smiled and said, ‘You always say that, but you never mean it.’”

My stomach twisted.

“She said that?””

Jenna nodded.

“She told him that everyone could see how much easier things were when you weren’t around.””

I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

Not because I believed it.

Because I couldn’t understand how someone who once knew every detail of my life could say something so cruel.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I didn’t agree with her.””

I turned toward him.

“Did you tell her to stop?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell her she was crossing a line?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation answered the question before his mouth did.

“Not clearly enough.””

I looked away.

The streetlights blurred slightly.

For years, I had trusted Daniel completely.

Not because I thought temptation didn’t exist.

Not because I believed my marriage was magically protected from problems.

But because I believed we would always choose each other.

That was what marriage was supposed to mean.

Choosing each other.

Again and again.

Even when someone else made it easy not to.

The restaurant door opened behind us.

Ryan stepped outside.

For a second, nobody spoke.

He looked at me with tired eyes.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just tired.

“Claire,” he said quietly.

I wiped my face before he could see the tears forming.

“What?””

Ryan looked toward the window where Megan was standing inside.

“She’s going to say I’m attacking her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He gave a small, humorless laugh.

“That’s what she does.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Ryan, what are you talking about?””

Ryan looked at him.

“You really don’t know?””

The question made the silence between us uncomfortable.

I felt my heart start beating faster.

“Know what?”” I asked.

Ryan looked down.

For a moment, he seemed embarrassed.

Then he said:

“Megan has always wanted what other people have.””

The words sounded harsh.

Almost unfair.

But the pain in his voice made me listen.

“She wanted my job when I got promoted,” he continued.

“She wanted my sister’s house when they bought it. She wanted Olivia’s engagement ring when Olivia got engaged.””

He shook his head.

“I thought it was just jealousy. I thought it was harmless.””

“And Daniel?”” I asked.

Ryan looked at him.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan sighed.

“She has been talking about him for months.””

Daniel went pale.

“What?””

Ryan looked at him.

“She told me she thought you were wasted on Claire.””

My chest tightened.

Daniel looked like he had been slapped.

“She said that?””

Ryan nodded.

“Several times.””

I looked at the restaurant window.

Megan was still inside.

She was sitting at the table, scrolling through her phone.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

Like she hadn’t just detonated a bomb in my marriage.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked Ryan.

His expression changed.

Guilt.

“I should have.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because every time I tried to confront her, she convinced me I was imagining things.””

He looked away.

“She’s good at making people question themselves.””

I knew exactly what he meant.

Because I was starting to realize she had been doing it to me for years.

The memories came rushing back.

Little moments I had ignored.

The comments I thought were jokes.

The strange compliments.

The times she compared herself to me.

At my wedding, when she hugged me and whispered, “You’re so lucky.””

I thought she meant lucky to be loved.

Maybe she meant lucky to have what she wanted.

A few minutes later, we all went back inside.

Not because everything was okay.

Because we needed answers.

Megan looked up when she saw us return.

Immediately, her expression changed.

“Oh, good,” she said.

“The meeting about how terrible I am can continue.””

Nobody responded.

That seemed to bother her.

She looked at me.

“Claire, seriously. Are you done?””

I stared at her.

“Done with what?””

“With accusing me.””

“I didn’t accuse you of anything.””

She laughed.

“You made a scene because I sat on Daniel’s lap.””

I looked around the table.

“You did more than sit on his lap.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“See? This is exactly what I mean.””

“What?””

“You’re insecure.””

The word hung in the air.

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

Megan always knew where to attack.

She knew my weak spots.

She knew I had spent years trying not to be the jealous wife.

She knew exactly what accusation would make me question myself.

“I’m insecure because I didn’t like seeing my best friend sitting on my husband?””

“Yes.””

She said it immediately.

No hesitation.

“That’s not normal.””

Ryan stared at her.

“Megan.””

She turned.

“What?””

He looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Just disappointed.

“Stop.””

For the first time that night, Megan seemed surprised.

“Excuse me?””

“You know what you’re doing.””

Her face hardened.

“Wow.””

She grabbed her glass.

“So now everyone is against me?””

Olivia finally spoke.

“Megan, nobody is saying that.””

“Yes, they are.””

She pointed around the table.

“You’re all judging me because Claire decided to be dramatic.””

I looked at Daniel.

He hadn’t said much since we came back inside.

That scared me more than anything.

Because I knew him.

Daniel was not a man who stayed silent when something was unfair.

But tonight, he looked lost.

Like he was finally seeing a person he had ignored for too long.

Megan noticed his silence.

And she used it.

“Daniel?””

Everyone looked at him.

She smiled.

“Tell them.””

He looked at her.

“Tell them what?””

“That we were joking.””

The entire table went silent.

Daniel took a breath.

“We were not joking in a way that was okay.””

Megan’s smile disappeared.

For the first time all night, she looked caught off guard.

“You’re seriously doing this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I’m finally being honest.””

I watched her face change.

The confidence disappeared.

The playful attitude disappeared.

Something colder appeared underneath.

“You’re choosing her?””

Daniel looked confused.

“She’s my wife.””

Megan laughed quietly.

“Right.””

That one word carried something I couldn’t explain.

Like she had been waiting for him to say something else.

Like she expected a different answer.

She stood up.

“I can’t believe this.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Megan, sit down.””

She ignored him.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

“You have no idea what you’re ruining.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

She picked up her purse.

Then she leaned closer.

Just enough so only I could hear.

“You really think tonight was about a joke?””

My heartbeat stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

She smiled.

A small smile.

The same one she gave me when I caught her on Daniel’s lap.

Then she whispered:

“You should ask your husband why he never told you about the night I almost became his emergency contact.””

I froze.

Megan walked away.

And as the restaurant door closed behind her, I turned slowly toward Daniel.

“What did she mean?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because Daniel had answers.

I could see it in his face.

And whatever happened that night…

May you like

Whatever he had hidden from me…

Was something Megan knew she could use.
