Chapter 8: The Email I Never Sent

I stared at the screen.

My name.

My email address.

My words.

Except they weren’t my words.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process what I was seeing.

The mind has a strange way of protecting itself.

When something is too impossible, it tries to find a simpler explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A technical problem.

Anything.

Anything except the truth.

“Show me.””

Daniel handed me the phone.

His fingers were shaking.

I read the email again.

*From: Emma Parker Subject: We need to talk*

*Daniel,*

*I don’t know how to say this anymore, so I’m just going to be honest.*

*I’m not happy. I haven’t been happy for a long time.*

*I feel trapped in this marriage, and I don’t know if I still feel the same way about you.*

*Maybe we both need to admit that we’re holding onto something that isn’t there anymore.*

*I think we should take some time apart.*

*Emma*

My stomach turned.

Because there was one sentence that hurt more than all the others.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it sounded like me.

It sounded like the version of me Megan wanted Daniel to believe existed.

The version who was distant.

The version who didn’t care.

The version who would leave first.

I looked up.

“I didn’t write this.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

The answer surprised me.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because at first, I thought maybe you wrote it when you were angry.””

My chest tightened.

“You thought I sent this?””

“Not completely.””

“But enough.””

He didn’t answer.

I looked around the room.

Megan was standing near the window.

Quiet.

Watching.

“You.””

Her eyes lifted.

“What?””

“You did this.””

She didn’t respond.

That silence was louder than a confession.

Ryan looked at her.

“Megan.””

She crossed her arms.

“You have no proof.””

I laughed.

“No proof?””

I held up the phone.

“You literally told us you wanted to make Daniel doubt me.””

“That doesn’t mean I sent anything.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked away.

“Explain what?””

“The email.””

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You expect me to believe someone hacked my email, copied my writing style, and sent my husband a message about ending our marriage?””

She stayed silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Megan.””

His voice sounded different.

Not confused.

Not guilty.

Angry.

“Did you send it?””

For the first time that night, Megan looked hurt.

“Daniel.””

“Did you?””

“I was trying to help you.””

The words landed like a slap.

I looked at her.

“Help him?””

“Yes.””

“You tried to destroy his marriage.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I tried to make him see the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That he was unhappy.””

Daniel stared at her.

“I never told you that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

Her voice softened.

“I saw it.””

Ryan let out a bitter laugh.

“You saw what you wanted to see.””

Megan ignored him.

“Daniel was always pretending.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were.””

That stopped her.

“You were pretending to be my friend.””

The room went quiet.

I watched Megan’s face change.

A tiny crack.

A moment where the confidence disappeared.

Then she looked at me.

“You really think you’re innocent in all this?””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You think none of this happened because of you?””

There it was.

The shift.

The thing people do when they know they’ve been caught.

They don’t defend themselves.

They attack.

“You’re blaming me?””

“I’m saying you stopped seeing him.””

Daniel immediately said, “Megan, stop.””

But she continued.

“You got comfortable.””

“No.””

“You stopped trying.””

“No.””

“You assumed he would always be there.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Not because I believed her.

Because she knew exactly where to aim.

She knew every insecurity I had.

Every fear I had confessed over twelve years.

And she was using them like weapons.

“You knew that because I trusted you.””

Megan looked away.

For a moment, she looked ashamed.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone heard it.

She looked down.

A message appeared.

She quickly locked the screen.

Too quickly.

Ryan noticed.

“Who is that?””

“No one.””

I almost laughed.

That phrase.

Again.

“No one.””

Megan looked at me.

“Emma, this conversation is over.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“It’s not.””

She grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Ryan stepped in front of the door.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“Move.””

“No.””

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not.””

He held up his phone.

“I’m asking you to stay because there are questions you need to answer.””

She looked nervous.

Good.

For once, she wasn’t controlling the room.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You’ve controlled every conversation tonight.””

He looked at Daniel.

“You controlled what he knew.””

Then at me.

“You controlled what she knew.””

Finally, at Megan.

“You don’t get to control this one.””

She looked furious.

“You’re making me the villain.””

Ryan’s expression didn’t change.

“You did that yourself.””

The silence after that was brutal.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where did you get the email?””

He sat down.

“It was three weeks ago.””

My chest tightened.

Three weeks.

Around the same time he started acting different.

“What happened?””

“I woke up one morning and saw it.””

“From my email?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed it?””

“No.””

“Then what did you do?””

He looked ashamed.

“I asked you.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“When?””

“Over breakfast.””

I searched my memory.

Three weeks ago.

A Tuesday morning.

Daniel had been quiet.

He had asked:

“Are you happy?””

I remembered.

I thought he was asking because we had been stressed.

I thought he wanted reassurance.

I remembered laughing.

“Of course I am.””

And he had just nodded.

“You never showed me the email.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That if you really felt that way, I’d force you to admit it.””

My heart hurt.

“Daniel.””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“So you just carried it?””

“Yes.””

“For three weeks?””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

Three weeks of him wondering if I wanted to leave.

Three weeks of me wondering if he did.

Three weeks where a fake message sat between us.

Exactly where Megan wanted it.

I turned toward her.

“You didn’t want Daniel to cheat.””

Megan didn’t move.

“You wanted him to think I was already gone.””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“You wanted him emotionally separated from me before you ever made a move.””

Her face tightened.

“You’re making everything sound planned.””

“Because it was.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I was hurt.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I felt invisible.””

“And you decided to make me invisible.””

Her eyes filled.

For a second, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered the empty chair.

The restaurant.

The way she smiled when she saw me.

“I want to know something.””

Megan looked at me.

“What?””

“Did you ever love me?””

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Not defensiveness.

Pain.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“Then why did you do this?””

She whispered:

“Because I hated that loving you always made me feel less.””

I stared at her.

“That wasn’t my fault.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say that after everything.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The same words.

But from her mouth, they meant nothing.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photo.

My heart stopped.

It was a screenshot of a message thread.

Not between Megan and Daniel.

Not between Megan and Alex.

Between Megan and someone else.

At the top of the screen was a name.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been at our anniversary dinner.

Someone who had been sitting across the table watching everything happen.

Ryan.

I looked at him.

His face went pale.

“Emma…”

I held up the phone.

“Why is Megan texting your husband?””

Megan turned toward me.

“What?””

I looked at Ryan.

Then at the screen.

The message was simple.

*Megan: I need you to do one more thing for me.*

Ryan stepped backward.

“I can explain.””

My heart sank.

Because after everything I had uncovered…

I thought there were no more surprises left.

I was wrong.

Ryan wasn’t just the person who warned me.

He was part of the story.

May you like

And the next message on the screen was from him.

*Ryan: If this works, Emma will finally lose everything.*
