Chapter 5: The Anniversary She Remembered

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

The message stayed open on my screen.

*Ask Daniel about the night of your anniversary.*

Those words felt heavier than everything else Megan had done.

Because she wasn’t just trying to hurt me.

She was reminding me of something.

Something she knew.

Something Daniel knew.

Something I didn’t.

I looked at my husband.

“Why did you react like that?””

Daniel’s eyes stayed fixed on the phone.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Don’t say my name like that. Answer the question.””

He swallowed.

“It’s complicated.””

I almost smiled.

Of course.

Everything was always complicated when the truth was inconvenient.

“Three months ago, my best friend started messaging you. She questioned our marriage. She told my brother she thought you deserved someone who understood you.

Tonight she sat on your lap in front of everyone. Now she’s telling me to ask you about our anniversary.””

I stepped closer.

“And your response is that it’s complicated?””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

I stared at him.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

“Because it isn’t.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He looked at his hands.

The same hands that had held mine on our wedding day.

The same hands that had held me when my father passed away.

The same hands I had trusted.

“Daniel.””

He took a breath.

“Our anniversary was difficult.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You remember.””

“Yes.””

“I mean… you remember what happened.””

My heart tightened.

“I remember you canceled dinner.””

His eyes lifted.

“And?””

“And you said you had an emergency at work.””

Silence.

A terrible, uncomfortable silence.

I felt my stomach drop.

“You didn’t.””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“You weren’t at work?””

“No.””

“Where were you?””

He didn’t answer.

I stood there waiting.

And waiting.

Finally, he whispered:

“With Megan.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

My brain rejected them.

Like a computer refusing a command.

“With Megan?””

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You were with Megan on our anniversary?””

“Yes.””

The room spun.

I sat down because my legs suddenly didn’t feel strong enough to hold me.

“When?””

“Before dinner.””

“Before the dinner you canceled?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She called me.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“She called you.””

“Yes.””

“On our anniversary.””

“Yes.””

“And you went.””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

I didn’t even know what emotion I was feeling anymore.

Anger.

Betrayal.

Confusion.

Something worse than all of them.

Disappointment.

“Why?””

He looked miserable.

“She was upset.””

I blinked.

“She was upset.””

“Yes.””

“And that mattered enough for you to leave me waiting at a restaurant?””

“No.””

“But you did.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

He ran his hand through his hair.

“She told me she was having problems with Ryan.””

I stared at him.

“So you went to comfort her?””

“Yes.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“On our anniversary?””

He nodded.

Every answer was making it worse.

“You didn’t think that was wrong?””

“I do now.””

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, you were married then too.””

“I know.””

I stood.

“No, I don’t think you do.””

He looked at me.

“You keep talking about what happened like you suddenly understand it because I’m hurt.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then when did you understand?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

Tonight.

After she was caught.

After everyone saw.

After the damage was impossible to hide.

I walked toward the window.

“Did anything happen?””

“No.””

“Did she try?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

My chest tightened.

“Did she try?””

“She was emotional.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked down.

“She said things.””

“What things?””

Daniel was silent.

“Tell me.””

“She said she felt like nobody noticed her.””

I shook my head.

“Of course.””

“Emma.””

“No, seriously.””

I turned around.

“She always does that. She makes herself the person who needs saving.””

Daniel didn’t disagree.

That hurt too.

“What did she say about me?””

His eyes moved away.

“Daniel.””

“She said…”

He stopped.

“What?””

“She said you didn’t look at me the way you used to.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She said she noticed things.””

My voice became quieter.

“What things?””

“She said you seemed happier around her.””

I stared at him.

“And what did you say?””

“I told her she was wrong.””

“Then why didn’t you leave?””

He looked ashamed.

“I should have.””

“Yes.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say you know. Not yet.””

He looked hurt.

But I continued.

“You went to meet my best friend alone on our anniversary because she was sad. You listened while she talked about our marriage. You let her believe she had a place in your life that wasn’t hers.””

“I never wanted that.””

“But you allowed it.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost made me angrier.

Because now he finally understood.

My phone buzzed again.

I looked down.

Another message from Megan.

This time, no apology.

No explanation.

Just:

*Ask him what happened after I left.*

My heart stopped.

I showed Daniel.

His face changed instantly.

“What happened after she left?””

“Emma.””

“What happened?””

He stood.

“Please.””

“Please what?””

“Don’t do this through text.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked toward the door.

“Can we talk tomorrow?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“Not tomorrow. Not after you’ve had time to decide what version of the truth you want to give me.””

His face fell.

“That’s not fair.””

“Neither was being the only person in my marriage who didn’t know what was happening.””

He looked away.

I watched him.

And then I saw something.

A tiny reaction.

A memory.

A fear.

“Something happened.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Emma.””

“Something happened after she left.””

He stayed silent.

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

He whispered:

“She kissed me.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Not because I thought nothing had happened.

Because some part of me had still been hoping.

Hoping I was wrong.

Hoping I was just hurt and suspicious.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She kissed me.””

“When?””

“After we talked.””

“And?””

“I moved away.””

“Immediately?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Did you tell me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would think I wanted it.””

I laughed.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were afraid because you knew you crossed a line.””

“I didn’t kiss her back.””

“That’s not the only way to cross one.””

He looked down.

I wiped my face.

“Did Megan know you were going to keep it from me?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How?””

“She told me not to tell you.””

My heart sank.

“What did she say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She said you would misunderstand.””

I stared at him.

“She kissed my husband and then convinced him to hide it from me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“That’s the part you still don’t understand.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“She wasn’t afraid I would misunderstand.””

I held up Megan’s message.

“She was afraid I would understand.””

Daniel didn’t speak.

Because he knew.

She didn’t want to protect our marriage.

She wanted to protect her access to it.

I grabbed my phone.

“I’m calling her.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Emma.””

“No.””

“Wait.””

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because she’s going to lie.””

I looked at him.

“Then let her.””

I pressed Megan’s name.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then she answered.

Her voice was soft.

Almost gentle.

“Emma.””

I felt a chill.

Because she didn’t sound surprised.

She sounded prepared.

“You knew I would find out.””

A pause.

Then:

“I knew Daniel would tell you eventually.””

I looked at my husband.

“Eventually?””

Megan sighed.

“Emma, please don’t make this uglier than it already is.””

My grip tightened.

“You kissed my husband.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

Daniel looked away.

I closed my eyes.

“And you still came to dinner tonight?””

Another pause.

“I wanted to talk to you.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You wanted to see what I knew.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

I looked at the floor.

“Tell me something.””

“What?””

“Did you ever actually want to save my friendship?””

Megan didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt more than any insult.

Finally, she said:

“I loved you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No, you loved being the person I trusted.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why?””

Silence.

Then Megan said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because you had everything I wanted.””

I froze.

“What?””

Her voice changed.

The softness disappeared.

“You had Daniel.””

The words came slowly.

Like she had been waiting years to say them.

“You had the life I should have had.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“Megan…”

“You don’t understand what it’s like watching someone get everything without appreciating it.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked horrified.

Because now he was hearing what I had heard.

The truth.

Not the joke.

Not the excuse.

The truth.

Megan wanted my life.

And then she said the one thing that made me realize this was never just about Daniel.

“I didn’t want to take your husband, Emma.””

A pause.

“I wanted to prove you weren’t as perfect as everyone thought.””

My blood went cold.

“Why?””

Her answer came instantly.

“Because if I couldn’t have your life…”

Silence.

Then:

“I wanted to watch it fall apart.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding my phone.

Unable to speak.

Until a new message appeared.

Not from Megan.

From Ryan.

One sentence.

*Emma, there’s something else you need to know about the night she kissed Daniel.*

May you like

And underneath it was a photo.

A photo that showed Megan wasn’t telling the whole truth.
