Chapter 7: The Door She Had No Right to Open
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
I stared at the notification on my phone.
*Motion detected: Front door opened.*
Then underneath:
*User: Megan Hart.*
My first thought wasn’t anger.
It was disbelief.
A person’s name can look strange when it appears somewhere it doesn’t belong.
Megan.
My best friend.
The woman who had spent holidays at my house.
The woman who knew where I kept the spare towels, which mug Daniel liked, and which floorboard creaked near the hallway.
The woman who once had a key because I trusted her.
But that key had been taken back.
Eight months ago.
After she accidentally left my door unlocked during a weekend trip.
I remembered laughing about it.
“Maybe you shouldn’t have my emergency key anymore,” I had joked.
She had smiled.
“Wow. Kicking me out of your house already?””
I had laughed.
I hadn’t known then that she would find another way inside.
I called Daniel immediately.
He answered after one ring.
“Emma?””
“Is Megan at the house?””
Silence.
Just one second.
But enough.
My heart sank.
“Daniel.””
“I can explain.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“Why is Megan in our house?””
“Emma, listen—”
“No.””
I stood from the bench.
“No more listening after the fact.””
“Please.””
“Why is she there?””
Daniel exhaled.
“She came to talk.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“She came to talk?””
“Yes.””
“At our house?””
“Yes.””
“While I’m gone?””
His silence answered.
I started walking back.
Fast.
“Emma.””
“Why didn’t you call me?””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“I don’t know.””
“Exactly.””
“Emma, please don’t assume the worst.””
I stopped walking.
“Daniel.””
My voice dropped.
“You are still saying that.””
“What?””
“Every time something happens, you tell me not to assume the worst.””
I swallowed.
“But every time I find out the truth, it’s worse than what I imagined.””
He didn’t respond.
“Is she still there?””
“Yes.””
“Are you alone with her?””
Another pause.
“No.””
My steps slowed.
“Who’s there?””
“Ryan.””
I froze.
“Ryan is there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I called him.””
I stared at the empty sidewalk.
“You called Ryan?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew you would think something happened.””
I closed my eyes.
“Something already happened.””
“No, Emma—”
“Put Ryan on the phone.””
A pause.
Then Ryan answered.
“Emma.””
His voice sounded tired.
“What is going on?””
He sighed.
“Megan went there.””
“I know. My security app told me.””
A pause.
“She used the old key.””
I stopped.
“She still had the key?””
Ryan was quiet.
“I thought you knew.””
My chest tightened.
“Knew what?””
“That she never gave it back.””
I felt numb.
“She told me she lost it.””
“Emma…”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another small lie.
Another thing I had ignored because I trusted her.
“What is she doing there?””
Ryan lowered his voice.
“She’s trying to control the situation.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means she knows you found out.””
I started walking faster.
“I’m coming home.””
“Emma.””
“What?””
“Be careful.””
I almost stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan hesitated.
“It means Megan is not the same person you thought she was.””
I looked ahead.
The streetlights blurred.
“I already know that.””
“No.””
His voice was serious.
“You know she hurt you.””
A pause.
“You don’t know how far she’ll go to avoid losing.””
The call ended.
By the time I reached the house, my hands were shaking.
The front door was unlocked.
I stared at it.
A door I had walked through thousands of times.
A door that suddenly felt unfamiliar.
I pushed it open.
The first thing I heard was Megan’s voice.
“I never wanted this.””
I stepped inside.
The living room went silent.
Daniel was standing near the couch.
Ryan stood beside him.
And Megan sat calmly in my favorite chair.
Like she belonged there.
Like she had always belonged there.
She looked at me.
Then smiled sadly.
“Emma.””
I hated how normal she sounded.
Like we were two friends meeting for coffee.
Not two people standing after a friendship had burned down.
“What are you doing here?””
She stood slowly.
“I wanted to talk.””
“You broke into my house.””
“I had a key.””
“That I took back.””
Her expression flickered.
Only slightly.
“You never asked for it.””
I stared at her.
“Are you serious?””
“I thought you trusted me.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I trusted the person I thought you were.””
That landed.
For a moment, Megan looked hurt.
Then the mask returned.
“You always know exactly what to say.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did she come here to apologize?””
Nobody answered.
I laughed softly.
“Of course not.””
Megan crossed her arms.
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“You’re hurt.””
“Yes.””
“But you’re not seeing the whole picture.””
I looked at her.
“Then show me.””
She took a breath.
“Daniel was unhappy.””
Daniel immediately said, “Megan.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You need to stop pretending.””
Then she looked back at me.
“He never told you how lonely he felt.””
I stared at my husband.
“Is that true?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not like she’s saying.””
Megan smiled.
“See?””
She pointed between us.
“This is what she does.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
“She makes everyone feel guilty for having feelings.””
I looked at Ryan.
He looked disgusted.
“Megan.””
She ignored him.
“You think because you’re the wife, you’re automatically right.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I think because I’m the wife, I deserved honesty.””
Silence.
Daniel looked down.
Megan noticed.
And smiled.
“There.””
She pointed at him.
“You see?””
I looked at her.
“See what?””
“He doesn’t even defend himself.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Because there’s no point arguing with you.””
Her face hardened.
“That’s exactly what I mean.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Megan, stop.””
She turned toward him.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
“I do.””
“You betrayed me.””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You’re worried about betrayal?””
The room went quiet.
Megan looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan took his phone out.
“I think Emma deserves to know why you were really at her house.””
Megan’s face changed.
For the first time.
Real fear.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
“Ryan.””
He held up the phone.
“I found the messages.””
My heart pounded.
“What messages?””
Megan looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Ryan looked at me.
“The ones where she planned this.””
I frowned.
“Planned what?””
Ryan unlocked his phone.
“She didn’t just start flirting with Daniel.””
He turned the screen toward me.
“She started creating opportunities.””
I looked.
The messages were between Megan and someone named *Lena*.
A friend I barely knew.
The first message read:
*Megan: I need to know if he’s actually unhappy.*
Another:
*Lena: Are you sure you want to go this far?*
Then:
*Megan: I’m not stealing him. I just need Emma to finally lose something.*
My hands went cold.
I kept scrolling.
*Lena: What if she finds out?*
*Megan: She won’t. She never questions people who love her.*
I stopped.
That sentence hurt the most.
Because it was true.
I had trusted her.
That was my mistake.
Megan looked at me.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“You’re acting like I’m a monster.””
I stared at her.
“You planned to hurt me.””
“I was angry.””
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“I felt invisible.””
“So you wanted me to feel invisible too?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a second, I saw the old Megan.
The woman who cried at my wedding.
The woman who knew my secrets.
Then I remembered.
Monsters don’t always look like monsters.
Sometimes they look like people who know exactly how to make you trust them.
Megan whispered:
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I finally do.””
She looked away.
Then suddenly, she smiled.
A small, unsettling smile.
And I knew she wasn’t finished.
“Emma.””
“What?””
“You think this is the worst thing I did?””
My blood ran cold.
“What else is there?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I told you I wanted to prove your life wasn’t perfect.””
The room became silent.
“I didn’t just collect information.””
I felt my heart race.
“What did you do?””
Megan’s smile disappeared.
And she said:
“I made sure Daniel would start doubting you before you ever doubted him.””
Daniel froze.
I turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
He looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
Megan whispered:
“Ask him about the email.””
My heart dropped.
“What email?””
Daniel went completely still.
And that was when I knew.
There was another secret.
Another piece of my marriage I had never been allowed to see.
I looked at my husband.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t answer.
“Who sent you an email?””
His face turned pale.
And slowly, he reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his phone.
Opened his inbox.
Then whispered:
“Emma…”
I stared at him.
“What?””
His voice broke.
“The email was from you.””
I froze.
“From me?””
He nodded.
“But I never sent it.””
And then he showed me the screen.
The sender.
My name.
May you like
My email address.
And a message that I had never written.
