Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Betrayal
I read the message again.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
*Ryan: If this works, Emma will finally lose everything.*
The words blurred.
Not because I was crying.
Because I wasn’t.
That was the frightening part.
I had spent the entire night feeling everything.
Anger.
Pain.
Disappointment.
Shock.
But now?
Now I felt empty.
A strange, quiet emptiness that came when your heart finally ran out of room for another betrayal.
I looked at Ryan.
The man who had warned me.
The man who told me I deserved the truth.
The man who had looked across the dinner table that night with tired eyes and made me think he was the only honest person in the room.
“Explain.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Ryan swallowed.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I held up the phone.
“Explain.””
Megan looked between us.
For the first time all night, she looked confused.
“You sent that?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
“Ryan.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at him.
“What?””
Ryan looked at him.
“I can explain.””
Daniel laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Ryan looked away.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“It’s the same excuse everyone has used tonight.””
I looked at Ryan.
“How long?””
He sighed.
“Not what you think.””
I almost smiled.
“Of course.””
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to start with that sentence.””
He lowered his head.
“How long were you involved?””
Ryan was silent.
Then:
“About six weeks.””
My stomach tightened.
Six weeks.
Everything had a timeline.
Every lie had a date.
Every betrayal had a beginning.
“What were you involved in?””
Ryan looked at Megan.
She looked away.
That told me enough.
“Tell me.””
Ryan took a deep breath.
“Megan came to me first.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed help.””
“With what?””
He hesitated.
“Getting your attention.””
I stared at him.
“My attention?””
“Yes.””
“She sat on my husband’s lap to get my attention?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“She wanted to prove something.””
“What?””
“That you would never believe anything bad about people you loved.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“She wanted to test how much you trusted everyone.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain the email.””
“No.””
“Then explain the email.””
Ryan went quiet.
Megan whispered:
“Ryan.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked nervous.
Not angry.
Nervous.
“You said you wouldn’t tell them.””
My heart stopped.
“You promised?””
Ryan looked ashamed.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Ryan rubbed his face.
“I helped her.””
“With what?””
“Getting access.””
My stomach dropped.
“Access to what?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Your email.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt my hands go cold.
“You helped her hack my email?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I gave her information.””
“What information?””
“The security questions.””
I stared at him.
“You knew those?””
He looked down.
“Megan knew them.””
I turned toward Megan.
Of course.
She knew.
My birthday.
My first pet.
My mother’s maiden name.
All the harmless details friends collect over years.
All the things I never imagined could become weapons.
“How?””
Ryan answered quietly.
“She said she needed proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That you didn’t love Daniel anymore.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“So she created evidence.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ryan’s face broke.
“Because I was angry.””
“At me?””
“No.””
“At Megan.””
That didn’t make sense.
“You were angry at your wife, so you helped her destroy my marriage?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I didn’t understand how far she would go.””
“You knew enough to help.””
“Yes.””
“And enough to hide it.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“How did you suddenly become the person warning me?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
I already knew.
Because guilt had finally become heavier than loyalty.
Daniel looked at him.
“You let us think you were helping.””
“I was trying to.””
“You were covering yourself.””
Ryan looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty didn’t make it better.
It just made it cleaner.
Megan suddenly spoke.
“Ryan, stop acting like you’re innocent.””
Everyone looked at her.
She laughed bitterly.
“You helped me.””
Ryan stared at her.
“And you ruined everything.””
“No.””
“You told me it would be harmless.””
“I never told you to send that email.””
“But you helped me get in.””
“I was trying to scare Emma into paying attention.””
I froze.
“What?””
Megan looked at me.
“I didn’t want to destroy your marriage.””
“Then what did you want?””
Her eyes filled.
“I wanted you to see what it felt like.””
“What?””
“To not feel chosen.””
I stared at her.
“Chosen?””
She laughed quietly.
“You always were.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice grew louder.
“Everyone chose you.””
“Megan.””
“No, Emma. They did.””
She pointed toward me.
“You were the pretty one.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The successful one.””
“That’s not true.””
“You had the relationship everyone wanted.””
“I worked for my life.””
“So did I.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did I always feel like I was behind?””
The room went quiet.
Because for the first time, Megan wasn’t pretending.
She wasn’t manipulating.
She was just wounded.
But being wounded didn’t erase what she did.
“I was your friend.””
“I know.””
“I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“And you used that.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
And somehow that hurt the most.
Because she finally admitted it.
No excuse.
No joke.
No explanation.
Just the truth.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from my brother, Alex.
*Emma, I need to tell you something about the email.*
I opened it.
A second message followed.
*I found out who originally created the fake address.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Daniel noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I read the next message.
*It wasn’t Megan’s idea.*
My heartbeat changed.
I looked at the screen.
*The email account was created six weeks before Megan ever mentioned Daniel.*
Six weeks.
Before.
I looked at Ryan.
Then Megan.
“Who created the email account?””
Nobody spoke.
I called Alex.
He answered immediately.
“Emma?””
“Tell me.””
A pause.
“You’re with them?””
“Yes.””
“Put it on speaker.””
I did.
Alex’s voice filled the room.
“I traced the account.””
“How?””
“Someone sent me the information.””
“Who?””
“Someone who regretted helping.””
My eyes moved to Ryan.
He looked away.
“Who created it?””
Alex took a breath.
“Emma…”
“Who?””
The silence was unbearable.
Then he said:
“It wasn’t Megan.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at Megan.
Her face went pale.
“What?””
Alex continued.
“The account was created from a device registered to someone else.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Daniel.””
The room disappeared.
I stared at my husband.
“No.””
Daniel stepped back.
“Emma, no.””
Alex continued.
“The account was created from Daniel’s old laptop.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
“I didn’t do that.””
“Then explain.””
“I can’t.””
Those words.
Those four words.
They destroyed something inside me.
Because after everything…
After every lie…
After every secret…
I needed him to have an answer.
But he didn’t.
Ryan looked at him.
“Daniel…”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Megan stared at him.
“You said you would never let her know.””
My blood froze.
I turned slowly.
“What did you say?””
Megan covered her mouth.
Too late.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emma.””
My voice became a whisper.
“What did she mean?””
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel sat down.
Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.
And he finally said the words I never expected to hear.
“I didn’t create the email to hurt you.””
I stared at him.
“Then why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was trying to find out if you were planning to leave me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He looked broken.
“I found something on your computer.””
I shook my head.
“What?””
“A draft.””
“A draft of what?””
He whispered:
“A letter saying you weren’t sure you wanted to stay married.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly…
There was another side to the story.
And the person I thought had betrayed me…
Had been afraid I betrayed him first.
Daniel looked at me.
“I thought you were leaving me.””
And then he said the sentence that changed everything:
“But the draft wasn’t written by you.””
I froze.
“What?””
His voice broke.
“Someone else had created it.””
I looked at Megan.
Then Ryan.
Then Daniel.
Because the truth wasn’t that one person had lied to me.
The truth was much worse.
May you like
Someone had been manufacturing a war between us.
And we had all been fighting inside it.
