Chapter 4: The Screenshot That Changed Everything
The screenshot arrived before I could prepare myself.
My phone vibrated once.
A tiny sound.
Almost nothing.
But somehow it felt louder than every argument I had heard that night.
I stared at the notification.
*Alex sent an image.*
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
Daniel was standing across the room, watching me.
“Emma.””
I ignored him.
My thumb pressed against the screen.
The image opened.
And there she was.
Megan.
Not in a photo.
Not in person.
But in words.
A conversation.
A message thread.
Her name sat at the top.
My hands started shaking as I read.
*Megan: She acts like she has everything figured out, but she doesn’t.*
I swallowed.
The next message appeared below.
*Megan: People only see what Emma wants them to see.*
My eyes moved lower.
*Alex: What are you talking about?*
Then Megan’s reply.
*Megan: Her marriage.*
My breathing slowed.
Not because I was calm.
Because my body was trying to understand something my heart already knew.
I kept reading.
*Megan: She thinks Daniel is completely happy. She has no idea what he’s missing.*
My stomach turned.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I looked at him.
Then back at the screen.
I couldn’t answer.
Because if I said it out loud, it became real.
I continued.
*Alex: Missing what?*
The next message from Megan was shorter.
Sharper.
*Megan: Someone who actually understands him.*
I closed my eyes.
A memory flashed through my mind.
Megan sitting in my kitchen two months earlier.
Drinking coffee.
Laughing.
Asking me if Daniel and I were “still in that honeymoon phase.””
I remembered thinking it was a strange question.
Now I knew it wasn’t.
She wasn’t curious.
She was collecting information.
I scrolled further.
*Alex: Megan, this is weird. You’re married. Emma is your best friend.*
Then:
*Megan: Don’t act innocent. You know what it’s like when someone feels invisible.*
My heart pounded.
Invisible.
That word.
It was always the word people used when they wanted permission to hurt someone.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you ever make Megan feel like she had a chance?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“No.””
“Think carefully.””
“I never did anything.””
“I didn’t ask if you cheated.””
His jaw tightened.
“Then what are you asking?””
“I’m asking if you made her believe she mattered to you in a way she shouldn’t.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I was nice to her.””
“Nice?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel.””
I held up the phone.
“Do you know what people confuse kindness with when they want something?””
He didn’t answer.
“An invitation.””
His face fell.
“I never invited anything.””
“Maybe not intentionally.””
The silence between us was heavy.
My phone rang.
Alex.
I answered.
“Why did you send this to me?””
His voice was quiet.
“Because you needed to see it.””
“You had this?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Since yesterday.””
I stared at the floor.
“Yesterday.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After dinner.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I called you three times.””
I checked my phone.
There were missed calls.
Three from Alex.
I hadn’t noticed.
Everything had been chaos.
“I thought you were upset about something else.””
“I was.””
My voice cracked.
“Apparently everyone was.””
“Emma.””
“No.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“I’m tired of everyone deciding when I can handle the truth.””
Alex went quiet.
“I’m sorry.””
That word again.
Sorry.
Everyone was sorry after they had already made their choice.
“Did you reply to her?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you say?””
“I told her she was wrong.””
“And?””
“And I told her she needed to stop talking about your marriage.””
“Did she?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“No?””
“She got angry.””
“What did she say?””
Alex hesitated.
“Emma…”
“What did she say?””
“She said you always get what you want.””
I stared ahead.
“What?””
“She said you had the perfect husband, the perfect house, the perfect life.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“And?””
“She said some people spend their whole lives watching others get lucky.””
I felt a chill.
Because that sounded exactly like Megan.
Not the words.
The resentment behind them.
The quiet bitterness she had hidden beneath jokes and compliments.
“Alex.””
“Yes?””
“Did she ever say she wanted Daniel?””
Silence.
A long one.
Then:
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
Even Daniel looked like he stopped breathing.
“When?””
“A few days ago.””
“How?””
“She didn’t say it directly.””
“What did she say?””
Alex sighed.
“She said, ‘If I had met Daniel before Emma, things would be different.’”
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The thought Megan had been hiding.
Not a joke.
Not a mistake.
A fantasy.
I ended the call.
For a while, nobody spoke.
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.
I stayed standing.
Two strangers in a room that used to feel like home.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“Stop.””
His face tightened.
“What?””
“Stop saying that like it fixes anything.””
“I don’t know what else to say.””
“Maybe the truth.””
“I’ve been telling you the truth.””
I laughed softly.
“No, Daniel.””
I walked closer.
“You’ve been telling me pieces of the truth after someone else forces you to.””
He looked down.
That hurt because he knew I was right.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That you’d think I wanted it.””
I stared at him.
“And did you?””
“No.””
“Then why were you scared?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the answer wasn’t simple.
Maybe he wasn’t scared of losing me because of what happened.
Maybe he was scared because he knew how it looked.
I sat down.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
He took a deep breath.
“Megan started acting different about three months ago.””
“Different how?””
“She started asking about us.””
“What kind of questions?””
“If we fought.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“If we were happy.””
“Anything else?””
He looked away.
“She asked if you ever worried I would leave.””
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
“Why would she ask that?””
“I don’t know.””
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“Because she wanted to know if there was an opening.””
The honesty hurt.
But I needed it.
“Did she ever tell you she had feelings for you?””
“No.””
“Did she ever say she was unhappy with Ryan?””
“Yes.””
“How often?””
“Sometimes.””
“And what did you do?””
“I told her she should talk to Ryan.””
“Anything else?””
“No.””
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
“And you couldn’t.””
“No.””
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“I should have told you the first time.””
“Yes.””
“I know.””
I looked away.
The painful part was that Daniel wasn’t a villain.
He wasn’t some stranger who had destroyed my life.
He was my husband.
The person I had trusted.
And somehow that made it hurt more.
My phone buzzed.
This time, I didn’t want to look.
But I did.
A new message.
From Megan.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*We need to talk before Emma hears the rest.*
My blood ran cold.
Before I heard the rest?
I looked at Daniel.
“What rest?””
He frowned.
“What?””
I turned the phone toward him.
He read the message.
And for the first time all night…
Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His voice was quiet.
“Emma, I think you need to be careful.””
“Careful?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He stared at the message.
Then whispered:
“Because Megan wouldn’t send that unless she knew something we don’t.””
I looked back at the screen.
Another notification appeared.
A second message.
This one from Megan.
*Ask Daniel about the night of your anniversary.*
My heart stopped.
Because our anniversary wasn’t a secret.
But what happened that night was.
May you like
And Daniel’s face told me one terrifying thing.
He remembered exactly what she was talking about.
