Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Messages

“Who else?””

My voice barely came out.

I already knew I was afraid of the answer.

Not because I thought Megan had made one mistake.

Not because I thought my best friend was capable of crossing one line.

But because every answer I had received that night had opened another door behind it.

And every door led somewhere darker.

Ryan was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Ryan,” I said.

“Who else?””

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Emma, don't listen to him.””

I turned slowly.

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because Ryan is angry.””

“And you’re not?””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

I pressed the phone closer to my ear.

“Ryan.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Your brother.””

The world stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

I stared at Daniel.

Then at the phone.

“What?””

Ryan exhaled.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

My fingers went numb.

“What did you say?””

“Megan has been messaging your brother, too.””

I laughed.

A strange, broken sound that didn’t even feel like it came from me.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

And that was worse.

I saw it.

He knew exactly who Ryan was talking about.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel, look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

“You knew?””

His silence was the loudest thing in the room.

I stepped backward.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

“Emma—”

“How long?””

He ran a hand over his face.

“I heard about it.””

“From who?””

Another pause.

“Megan.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Megan told you she was talking to my brother?””

“No.””

“Then what did she tell you?””

Daniel looked miserable.

“She mentioned him.””

“What does that mean?””

“She said he was funny.””

I stared at him.

“Funny.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She said you were lucky to have a brother who cared about you.””

I waited.

“That’s it?””

Daniel looked down.

“No.””

The room felt smaller.

“What else?””

“She said he understood her.””

I felt something cold move through me.

My brother, Alex.

The person who had walked me home after my first heartbreak.

The person who gave a speech at my wedding about how happy he was that I had found someone who loved me.

The person who always called Daniel his brother.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Ryan spoke softly through the phone.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

“Ryan, how do you know?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Because I saw the messages.””

My throat tightened.

“Where?””

“On Megan’s tablet.””

“Why were you looking at her tablet?””

He hesitated.

“Because I already suspected something.””

I looked toward the window.

Everyone had been suspicious.

Everyone had been watching.

Everyone had been seeing pieces of my life fall apart.

Except me.

“How long has this been happening?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“Guess.””

Ryan sighed.

“About two months.””

Two months.

I closed my eyes.

Two months of Megan smiling at me.

Two months of her coming over for coffee.

Two months of her hugging me and asking how my marriage was going.

Two months of her knowing exactly where my weak spots were.

My phone shook slightly in my hand.

“Did Alex know?””

Ryan was quiet.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I only saw her messages to him. I didn’t see his replies.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you?””

He looked confused.

“Did I what?””

“See the messages?””

“No.””

“Then why did you look like you knew?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t know about Alex.””

“You reacted.””

“Because Ryan said your brother.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You reacted before Ryan explained.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

I watched him struggle.

And suddenly I realized something terrifying.

Daniel wasn’t shocked that Megan had been messaging my brother.

He was shocked that I found out.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

“Nothing.””

The word came too fast.

I shook my head.

“You’re still doing it.””

“Doing what?””

“Protecting yourself.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

I ended the call with Ryan.

Not because I was done.

Because I couldn’t handle one more voice telling me another piece of my life was a lie.

The bedroom became silent.

Daniel stood across from me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I am.””

“But you keep leaving out details.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

I laughed softly.

“You need to understand something.””

He waited.

“When someone says they hid something to protect you, what they usually mean is they wanted to avoid dealing with your reaction.””

“That’s not fair.””

“It’s true.””

He sat down heavily.

“I messed up.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“But I swear there was never anything between me and Megan.””

I looked at him.

“Do you know what hurts?””

His eyes lifted.

“I believe you.””

He looked surprised.

“I believe nothing happened.””

“Then why—”

“Because something almost happened.””

He went quiet.

I walked toward the dresser.

“Megan didn’t just sit on your lap tonight.””

“I know.””

“She tested something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She wanted to see what she could get away with.””

His face changed.

“And I let her.””

The honesty in his voice almost hurt more.

Because finally, after hours of excuses, he admitted it.

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“Yes, you did.””

My phone buzzed.

Both of us looked at it.

This time, it was Alex.

My brother.

My heart jumped.

I answered immediately.

“Alex?””

“Emma?””

His voice sounded confused.

“What’s wrong?””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me.

“I need to ask you something.””

A pause.

“Okay.””

“Has Megan been messaging you?””

Silence.

Not a confused silence.

A guilty one.

My heart sank.

“Alex.””

“Emma…”

“Answer me.””

He sighed.

“Who told you?””

I closed my eyes.

That was all I needed.

“Alex.””

“Emma, it’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone always said that.

It’s not what you think.

The universal sentence people used right before explaining exactly why you were right.

“Then tell me what it is.””

“I didn’t encourage it.””

“Did she message you?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

“Alex.””

“A few weeks.””

I gripped the edge of the dresser.

“A few weeks?””

“Emma, listen.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You listen.””

Daniel moved closer.

I held up my hand.

“No.””

I needed to hear this.

“How many people knew?””

Alex went quiet.

“What?””

“How many people knew Megan was doing this?””

“Emma—”

“Answer me.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Ryan knew.””

“Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you.””

Another silence.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Megan had betrayed me.

I already knew that.

Not because Daniel had hidden things.

I already knew that too.

But because everyone I loved had decided I was the only person who didn’t deserve the truth.

“Why?””

Alex’s voice softened.

“Because we were trying to figure out what she wanted.””

I froze.

“What she wanted?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

“Emma…”

“No. Tell me.””

Alex hesitated.

Then he said:

“She wasn’t just flirting.””

My stomach twisted.

“What was she doing?””

“She was asking questions.””

“What questions?””

“About your marriage.””

I gripped my phone tighter.

“What kind of questions?””

Alex’s voice dropped.

“Questions about whether you and Daniel were happy.””

A cold chill ran through me.

“And?””

“And whether you still loved him.””

I closed my eyes.

The room spun.

My best friend hadn’t accidentally crossed a line.

She had been measuring the distance between me and my husband.

“She asked you that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Alex didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because she told me she thought you didn’t deserve him.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Alex continued.

“And Emma?””

“What?””

“There’s something else you need to know.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“What?””

“I found something on Megan’s tablet.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“A message she sent yesterday.””

I waited.

“She wasn’t talking about Daniel.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who?””

Alex’s answer came quietly.

“She was talking about you.””

May you like

And before I could ask what he meant, my phone lit up with a screenshot.

A screenshot that would change everything I thought I knew about my best friend.
