Chapter 9: The Night Maisie Was Born
Graham stared at the message until the screen blurred.
*Bring the little girl to Vermont, or I will tell Graham what really happened the night she was born.*
The sender's name remained at the top.
*Estelle Mercer.*
His grandmother.
A woman he had spent his entire life believing was dead.
Naomi stood beside him, holding Maisie's hand.
“What does it say?”” she asked.
Graham turned the phone toward her.
Naomi read it once.
Then again.
Her fingers tightened around Maisie’s.
“She wants you to know.””
Graham looked at her.
“You know what happened.””
Naomi didn't answer.
“Don't do that.””
“Do what?””
“Look at me like you're already saying goodbye.””
Naomi's eyes filled.
“I've been trying to protect you.””
“From the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought knowing would destroy everything.””
Graham looked down at Maisie.
His daughter was quietly coloring at the desk, unaware that the adults around her were standing on the edge of a cliff.
“You keep saying that,” he whispered.
“But everything is already destroyed.””
Naomi closed her eyes.
“No.””
She squeezed his hand.
“Not everything.””
They left for Vermont before dawn.
Richard insisted on coming.
Daniel stayed behind to contact a lawyer and preserve the files they had found.
Vanessa was still missing.
And Eleanor refused to come.
“I can't face her,” she'd said.
Graham hadn't asked which woman she meant.
The drive was long and silent.
Maisie slept in the back seat with her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.
Naomi sat beside Graham in the passenger seat.
For the first two hours, neither spoke.
Finally, Graham said,
“Were you ever with Daniel?””
Naomi stared through the windshield.
“No.””
“Never?””
“Never.””
“Then why did you let my family believe it?””
“Because they weren't interested in the truth.””
“That isn't an answer.””
Naomi looked at him.
“The day Maisie was born, Daniel saved her life.””
Graham's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“I remember the emergency.””
“You remember what they wanted you to remember.””
“What happened?””
Naomi took a slow breath.
“Maisie stopped breathing.””
Graham's jaw clenched.
“She was only a few hours old.””
“She had a dangerous reaction after birth. Her oxygen dropped. The doctors rushed her away.””
“I remember.””
“You were outside the neonatal unit.””
He glanced at her.
“I was there.””
“Yes.””
“But you weren't.””
Her voice broke.
“No.””
“I was unconscious.””
Graham's stomach turned.
“You never told me.””
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
“Because when I woke up, your mother was standing beside my bed.””
“What did she say?””
Naomi looked down.
“She said Maisie belonged to the Mercer family.””
Graham shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“She said you were under too much pressure. She said your father was furious. She said if I fought them, they'd use the complications during birth against me.””
Graham's face hardened.
“They threatened you?””
Naomi nodded.
“She told me they could prove I was unstable.””
“You weren't.””
“I know.””
“But I didn't know what they had.””
She swallowed.
“And while I was still weak, they took Maisie.””
Graham's voice cracked.
“Who?””
“Estelle.””
He felt the temperature in the car drop.
“My grandmother.””
“Yes.””
“She took our daughter?””
“For six hours.””
He stared at the road.
“What?””
“She said she was taking Maisie for additional testing.””
“You believed her?””
“I was recovering from an emergency delivery.””
Naomi's eyes filled.
“I couldn't even stand without help.””
Graham swallowed.
“What happened during those six hours?””
“She took Maisie to another hospital.””
“Why?””
“To run a DNA test.””
“Without us?””
“Yes.””
“Between me and Maisie?””
“No.””
Graham looked at her.
Naomi whispered,
“Between Maisie and someone else.””
The car remained silent.
“Daniel.””
Naomi nodded.
“Why?””
“Because Estelle had already decided you weren't Maisie's father.””
Graham's breathing became shallow.
“But the test…”
“It wasn't because she thought Daniel was the father.””
He frowned.
“Then why?””
“Because Estelle needed a reason to separate us.””
“That's insane.””
Naomi looked toward the sleeping child in the back seat.
“She wanted Maisie to inherit everything.””
Graham stared at her.
“But I'm her grandson.””
“You were.””
He looked at her sharply.
Naomi's voice dropped.
“Estelle believed you were weak because you loved people outside the family.””
Graham almost laughed.
“She thought you were weak because you loved me?””
“She thought love made you disloyal.””
He said nothing.
Naomi continued.
“She wanted the Mercer heir to be raised under Mercer control.””
“And you stood in the way.””
“Yes.””
“So what happened?””
“The DNA sample from the other man didn't match.””
Graham's shoulders relaxed for one second.
Then Naomi added,
“That man wasn't Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“Who was it?””
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“I only saw the paperwork years later.””
She reached into her bag.
“I kept this.””
Graham glanced at the document she handed him.
It was an old hospital report.
At the bottom was a name.
*Samuel Vale.*
Graham frowned.
“Who is Samuel Vale?””
Naomi shook her head.
“I don't know.””
He looked at the date.
The day Maisie was born.
“Why would Estelle test Maisie against him?””
“She never told me.””
“And Daniel?””
“Daniel found out.””
“That was why he knew so much.””
“Yes.””
“And that's why your parents paid him.””
Naomi nodded.
“He threatened to expose what Estelle had done.””
Graham stared ahead.
“Then why did he disappear?””
“Because Estelle gave him a choice.””
“What choice?””
“Take the money and leave, or watch his family suffer.””
Graham's jaw tightened.
“She used his brother.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa?””
Naomi closed her eyes.
“Vanessa found out about the records.””
“When?””
“Before she met you.””
Graham looked at her.
“How?””
“Her father worked with one of Estelle's companies.””
A terrible thought struck him.
“So Vanessa knew the family before she knew me.””
“Yes.””
“And she deliberately entered my life?””
Naomi didn't answer.
That was enough.
By late afternoon, they reached the Vermont house.
It stood alone at the end of a long private road surrounded by dark pine trees.
The windows were lit.
Someone was home.
Graham parked.
Richard got out first.
“Stay in the car,” he said.
Graham shook his head.
“No.””
He opened the back door.
“Maisie stays with us.””
Naomi immediately took her daughter into her arms.
They approached the house together.
Before Graham could knock, the door opened.
An elderly woman stood inside.
Silver hair.
Straight posture.
Sharp blue eyes.
She looked directly at Graham.
For a moment, his childhood memories rearranged themselves.
He had seen those eyes in old photographs.
His mother had always said Estelle had died before he was old enough to remember her.
That had been a lie.
“You're taller,” Estelle said.
Graham's voice was cold.
“Where is Vanessa?””
“Gone.””
“Where?””
“She betrayed me.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“You tried to take my daughter.””
Estelle looked at Maisie.
“No.””
She smiled faintly.
“I tried to bring my great-granddaughter home.””
“She has a home.””
“With you?””
“With her mother.””
Estelle's eyes hardened.
“A mother who allowed her daughter to live in fear?””
Graham stepped between them.
“Don't speak about Naomi like that.””
Estelle smiled.
“So you finally learned to protect her.””
Graham felt something twist inside him.
“What happened the night Maisie was born?””
Estelle looked at Richard.
Then at Naomi.
Then back at Graham.
“I can show you.””
She stepped aside.
“Come in.””
The house smelled of old books and wood smoke.
Estelle led them into a study.
On the wall hung dozens of Mercer family portraits.
Generations of people staring down from gilded frames.
At the center was one photograph Graham had never seen.
His grandmother stood beside a younger woman.
Vanessa.
Graham stopped.
“When was this taken?””
“Three years before your wedding.””
He looked at Estelle.
“She knew you.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Her father asked me for help.””
“With what?””
“His company was failing.””
Estelle sat down.
“Vanessa needed a way into your family.””
Graham stared at the photograph.
“She knew about me?””
“Of course.””
“Before she met me?””
“Yes.””
Naomi whispered,
“I told you.””
Estelle looked at her.
“You didn't tell him everything.””
Graham turned.
“What didn't she tell me?””
Estelle smiled.
“Ask her about the envelope.””
Naomi's face changed.
“What envelope?””
“The one she received after Maisie was born.””
Graham looked at Naomi.
“What envelope?””
Naomi shook her head.
“I don't remember.””
Estelle's smile disappeared.
“You do.””
She opened a drawer and removed a yellowed envelope.
Then she placed it on the table.
Graham stared at it.
His name was written across the front.
In Naomi's handwriting.
“What is this?”” he asked.
Naomi's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought it was gone.””
Graham picked it up.
“What's inside?””
Before Naomi could answer, Estelle said,
“The truth about Maisie's father.””
Graham slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a hospital birth certificate.
He unfolded it.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then froze.
Under *Father's Name*, there was a blank space.
Not Graham Mercer.
Not Daniel Carter.
Blank.
Graham looked up.
“I don't understand.””
Naomi's voice trembled.
“Because I wasn't allowed to put your name there.””
“Who stopped you?””
She looked at Estelle.
“Your grandmother.””
Graham turned toward the old woman.
“Why?””
Estelle's face became strangely calm.
“Because the man you believed was your father was not your biological father.””
Graham stared.
“What?””
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
“Mother, that's enough.””
Estelle ignored him.
“Your father has known for thirty years.””
Graham turned to Richard.
“Known what?””
Richard couldn't speak.
Estelle answered for him.
“Your father isn't your biological father.””
The room went silent.
Graham looked at Maisie.
Then Naomi.
Then the birth certificate.
His entire family history seemed to crack open at once.
Estelle leaned back.
“And now you understand why I had Maisie tested.””
Graham's voice was barely audible.
“Tested against whom?””
Estelle smiled.
“Against the man who is actually your father.””
She slid one final photograph across the table.
Graham looked down.
And the face staring back at him was a man he had seen his entire life.
A man he had never known was related to him.
Richard whispered,
“Graham…”
But Graham was already staring at the date printed beneath the photograph.
It had been taken the same week he was born.
And suddenly, one terrible possibility became impossible to ignore.
May you like
Maisie's bloodline had never been what the Mercer family claimed it was.
And someone had known the truth for decades.
