Chapter 6: The Father Behind the Door
Graham stared at his father as though the words had been spoken in another language.
“Say that again.””
Richard didn’t move.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Richard…”
“You heard me,” Richard said.
Graham’s hands curled into fists.
“No. I heard a sentence that makes no sense.””
“It makes perfect sense.””
“My daughter is four years old.””
“I know.””
“She is mine.””
Richard looked at him.
“That is what we all wanted to believe.””
Graham stepped backward.
The chair behind him struck the wall.
“You all?””
Richard’s silence was answer enough.
“You all thought Maisie wasn't mine?””
“No,” Eleanor said quickly.
“Not all of us.””
“Then who?””
Richard looked at his wife.
Eleanor couldn't meet Graham's eyes.
“Your mother suspected.””
Graham laughed once, but there was nothing amused about it.
“Suspected what?””
“That Naomi had been with Daniel.””
“Were they?””
“I don't know.””
Graham shook his head.
“You keep saying you don't know. But somehow everyone else knew enough to ruin my life.””
Richard's voice hardened.
“We were trying to protect you.””
“Stop saying that.””
“Graham—”
“You didn't protect me.””
He pointed toward the photograph on the desk.
“You paid a man to disappear.””
“We paid him because he threatened your family.””
“You altered medical records.””
Richard didn't answer.
“You hid a DNA request.””
Still nothing.
“You let me believe my daughter was mine while you secretly questioned whether she was.””
Eleanor finally spoke.
“We had reasons.””
“What reasons?””
She swallowed.
“Because Daniel said Naomi had been in contact with him during her pregnancy.””
Graham froze.
“What kind of contact?””
“Messages. Meetings.””
“And you believed him?””
“We saw some of them.””
“Where?””
“On Naomi's old phone.””
Graham's eyes narrowed.
“Who had her phone?””
Eleanor looked at Richard.
Richard said, “We did.””
The words landed like a blow.
“You went through her phone?””
“She wasn't going to tell us the truth.””
“You had no right.””
“We thought we were saving you from making a mistake.””
Graham slammed his palm against the desk.
“She was pregnant with my child!””
“That's what we hoped,” Richard said quietly.
The room went dead silent.
Graham looked at him.
“Hoped?””
Richard nodded once.
“But after Maisie was born, Daniel appeared again.””
“What did he want?””
“Money.””
“How much?””
“More than we were willing to give.””
Graham stared at the transfer receipt.
“And the twenty-five thousand?””
“Was the first payment.””
“First?””
“Yes.””
“How many payments?””
Richard said nothing.
Graham turned toward his mother.
“How many?””
Eleanor's voice was barely audible.
“Three.””
Graham felt sick.
“Seventy-five thousand dollars.””
She nodded.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel promised to leave.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
Graham laughed bitterly.
“Of course he didn't.””
Richard walked to the window.
“He kept threatening to tell you that Maisie was his.””
“And was she?””
Richard turned.
“We don't know.””
Graham stopped breathing.
“What?””
“We never got a definitive answer.””
“You never got a DNA test?””
“We attempted one.””
“What happened?””
Richard looked at Eleanor.
She whispered,
“Naomi refused.””
Graham stared at her.
“Why?””
“She said she would never allow your family to question her daughter like she was evidence.””
“That sounds like Naomi.””
Richard frowned.
“You're still defending her.””
“No.””
Graham looked toward the door.
“I'm trying to understand why she would refuse.””
Eleanor's eyes filled.
“Because she already knew the answer.””
Graham turned around.
“What answer?””
“She knew Daniel wasn't Maisie's father.””
His chest tightened.
“Then why did she refuse?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Because the test wasn't really about Daniel.””
Graham frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard finally spoke.
“The sample we had wasn't Daniel's.””
Graham stared.
“Whose was it?””
Richard didn't answer.
“Whose?””
“Yours.””
Graham looked confused.
“You already had my DNA.””
“We did.””
“So what was the point?””
“To compare it against Maisie's.””
“And?””
Richard's eyes moved away.
“The result said there was an inconsistency.””
Graham felt his knees weaken.
“What kind of inconsistency?””
“We couldn't explain it.””
“Explain it.””
“We didn't trust the laboratory.””
Graham stared at them.
“You spent seventy-five thousand dollars, invaded Naomi's privacy, changed hospital records, and then decided the lab was wrong?””
“It was a preliminary test.””
“And you never told me.””
“We were afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you'd leave Naomi.””
Graham stared at his father.
“You wanted me to leave her?””
“We wanted you to be certain.””
“You didn't want certainty.””
His voice rose.
“You wanted control.””
Neither parent answered.
Then Graham's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
**You were never supposed to hear this from them. Come alone. St.
Mary's. 10 p.m.**
Graham looked at the screen.
Then at his parents.
“Who knows I'm here?””
“No one,” Richard said.
Graham looked at the message again.
Someone had been watching.
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
“I'm going to St. Mary's.””
Eleanor grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked down at her hand.
“Let go.””
“Graham, please.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent that message knows things that could destroy you.””
“Maybe the truth should.””
He pulled his arm free.
Richard's voice followed him.
“Graham.””
He stopped.
“If you see Daniel, don't believe everything he says.””
Graham turned slightly.
“That's the problem.””
His voice was cold.
“I don't know who to believe anymore.””
At 9:47 that night, Graham parked two blocks from St. Mary's.
The hospital looked almost exactly as he remembered it.
Same emergency entrance.
Same rows of windows.
Same faint antiseptic smell that seemed to cling to the air even outside.
He sat in his car until his phone showed 9:59.
Then he walked inside.
A security guard glanced at him but said nothing.
He followed the signs toward the old maternity wing.
The hallway was nearly empty.
At the end stood a man in a dark coat.
Graham recognized him immediately from the photograph.
Daniel Carter.
The man looked older than the picture.
Tired.
His face carried a scar near his left eyebrow.
He didn't smile.
“You came.””
Graham stopped several feet away.
“Are you Maisie's father?””
Daniel's expression changed.
“That's what they told you?””
“Answer me.””
“No.””
The answer came so quickly that Graham blinked.
“No,” Daniel repeated.
“I'm not.””
“Then why were you involved?””
“Because I was her doctor.””
“You came to see my daughter.””
“I came to check on her.””
“Without my permission.””
“Because I knew what Vanessa was planning.””
Graham's eyes narrowed.
“What did Vanessa plan?””
Daniel looked down the empty corridor.
“You need to ask yourself why she wanted you to believe Maisie wasn't yours.””
“I already know what happened.””
“No, you don't.””
Daniel took something from his coat.
A flash drive.
He held it out.
“Everything is on here.””
Graham didn't take it.
“What is it?””
“Hospital records.””
“You said they were altered.””
“They were.””
“By my mother?””
“Partly.””
“Who else?””
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
“Vanessa.””
Graham felt a chill.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Four months before the wedding.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It will.””
Daniel held out the drive again.
“Take it.””
Graham finally did.
Then he asked the question that had haunted him all day.
“Why did my parents pay you?””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Because your mother asked me to lie.””
“What lie?””
“That I'd slept with Naomi.””
Graham's eyes widened.
“You didn't?””
“No.””
“Then why did you agree?””
“Because I needed money for my brother's surgery.””
Graham stared at him.
“Your brother?””
“Kidney failure.””
Daniel looked away.
“Your mother knew I was desperate.””
“So she paid you to accuse Naomi.””
“Yes.””
“And you disappeared.””
“I left town.””
“For how long?””
“Three years.””
“Why come back?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because I found out Vanessa had contacted me again.””
“What did she want?””
“She wanted the same thing your mother wanted.””
Graham's voice became barely audible.
“Make me doubt Naomi.””
Daniel nodded.
“Only Vanessa wanted more.””
“What?””
“She wanted Naomi to lose Maisie.””
The words hit Graham like a physical blow.
“What are you talking about?””
“She asked me to provide evidence that Naomi was neglecting her.””
Graham stared.
“She wanted you to help her take my daughter?””
“She wanted your family to believe Naomi was dangerous.””
“That’s insane.””
“I thought so too.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“Because Vanessa threatened me.””
“With what?””
“She knew about my brother.””
Graham's face went pale.
“She threatened his treatment?””
“Yes.””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“She said if I didn't cooperate, she'd make sure no hospital in the city would take him.””
Graham felt a wave of anger.
“Did you?””
“I gave her information.””
“What information?””
“Your daughter's schedule. The names of her teachers. Where Naomi took her after school.””
Graham stared at him.
“You helped her stalk my family.””
“I did.””
Daniel didn't defend himself.
“I was ashamed.””
Graham looked at the flash drive.
“And what's on this?””
“Proof that Vanessa forged records and staged incidents.””
“What incidents?””
“The ones that were supposed to make you believe Naomi was neglecting Maisie.””
Graham's mind flashed back to every strange accusation.
Maisie arriving late to school.
A forgotten lunch.
A missed pediatric appointment.
Bruises that had never quite made sense.
The anonymous complaints.
He had believed some of them.
God help him, he had believed some of them.
Daniel stepped closer.
“There is one more thing.””
Graham looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel's expression changed.
“This whole plan started long before your wedding.””
“How long?””
“Before Vanessa ever met you.””
Graham's heart pounded.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She knew about Naomi.””
“How?””
“She had been watching her.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said,
“Because Vanessa didn't meet you by accident.””
Graham stopped.
The corridor seemed to tilt beneath him.
“What did you just say?””
“She already knew your family.””
“How?””
Daniel looked toward the maternity wing.
“Ask your mother who Vanessa was visiting at St. Mary's before she ever met you.””
Graham's phone suddenly rang.
Naomi.
He answered immediately.
“Naomi?””
Her voice was trembling.
“Graham, where are you?””
“St. Mary's.””
There was a long silence.
Then Naomi whispered,
“You have to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because Maisie is with me.””
Graham frowned.
“What?””
“I came downstairs to get her some water.””
Naomi's breathing became frantic.
“She was in her room ten minutes ago.””
Graham's blood ran cold.
“Where is she now?””
“I can't find her.””
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face had gone white.
Then Naomi screamed through the phone,
“Graham, someone took our daughter.””
May you like
And in the hospital hallway behind Graham, a door slowly opened.
Vanessa stepped out.
