Chapter 7: The Door That Should Have Stayed Locked

Graham stared at Vanessa.

For one impossible second, his mind refused to connect what he was seeing with what he had just heard.

Naomi’s voice was still echoing from the phone.

Someone took our daughter.

And Vanessa stood twenty feet away in an empty hospital corridor as if she had been waiting for him.

“Where is Maisie?”” Graham asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

“Where is my daughter?””

Her face went pale.

“I don't know.””

Graham ended the call.

He stepped toward her.

“You were outside that door.””

“I just got here.””

“Why?””

“I needed to find you.””

“You knew I was here?””

She froze.

Graham saw it.

The hesitation.

The calculation.

The same tiny pause he had noticed in the ballroom before everything had fallen apart.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“You knew I was coming to St. Mary’s.””

“I guessed.””

“How?””

“I saw the message.””

“What message?””

“The one Daniel sent you.””

Graham turned toward Daniel.

Daniel had gone completely still.

“You gave her my number?””

“No.””

Daniel’s answer was immediate.

“I didn't.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Then how did you know?””

She didn't answer.

Graham's phone rang again.

Naomi.

He answered.

“Naomi, stay on the line.””

“I found her shoes.””

His stomach dropped.

“Where?””

“In the hallway.””

“Is the door locked?””

“No.””

“Don't touch anything.””

“I already did.””

“Naomi—”

“I know.””

Her breathing was ragged.

Then he heard something in the background.

A sound.

Metal scraping against metal.

“What's that?””

“I don't know.””

“Naomi, where exactly are you?””

“In the basement.””

Graham stiffened.

“The basement?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you there?””

“There’s a storage room under the stairs. Maisie's toy box is inside.””

Graham looked at Daniel.

“Go.””

Daniel didn't hesitate.

He ran toward the elevator.

Graham grabbed Vanessa's wrist.

She jerked away.

“Don't touch me.””

“Then don't give me a reason.””

“I haven't done anything.””

“Not yet?””

Her face hardened.

“You already decided I'm guilty.””

“No.””

He stared at her.

“I've decided you stopped deserving the benefit of the doubt.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“Graham…”

“Where is she?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you here?””

“I told you.””

“You're lying.””

A few feet away, Daniel stopped.

He turned.

“Graham.””

“What?””

“The elevator's not working.””

Graham glanced at the indicator.

The display was dark.

Daniel pressed the button again.

Nothing.

“Stairs,” Graham said.

They ran.

Vanessa remained frozen for half a second before following.

“Graham!””

He didn't turn around.

The stairwell echoed with their footsteps.

As they reached the lower level, Naomi appeared at the far end of the corridor.

She was barefoot.

Her hair was loose.

Her face was streaked with tears.

The moment she saw Graham, she ran toward him.

“Maisie is gone.””

He caught her shoulders.

“When did you last see her?””

“She was sleeping.””

“Who was with her?””

“No one.””

“Did you hear anything?””

“A door.””

“What door?””

“The basement door.””

Graham looked toward the storage area.

“You said her shoes were there.””

Naomi nodded.

“They were beside the stairs.””

Daniel walked past them.

“Show me.””

Naomi pointed.

The basement storage room door was slightly open.

Graham's pulse accelerated.

He reached for the handle.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

“Why?””

“There’s something wrong.””

“What?””

Daniel crouched.

He pointed at the floor.

Tiny wet footprints.

Children's footprints.

They led into the room.

But none came out.

Naomi covered her mouth.

“Maisie.””

Graham pushed the door open.

The room was dark.

Shelves lined the walls.

Old furniture was stacked against one corner.

Maisie's bright red toy box sat open on the floor.

Inside was a folded blanket.

Nothing else.

“Maisie!””

His voice bounced against the concrete walls.

No answer.

Naomi rushed inside.

“She was here.””

Graham grabbed his phone and turned on the flashlight.

The beam swept across the room.

There.

Behind a stack of boxes.

A small pink hair clip.

Maisie's.

Naomi dropped to her knees.

“No.””

Graham crouched beside her.

“She left this.””

Daniel examined the floor.

“There's another set of footprints.””

Graham looked.

Adult shoes.

Deep tread.

Leading toward the back wall.

“Where do they go?””

Daniel moved the boxes.

Behind them was an old steel door.

Graham's heart slammed against his ribs.

He pulled the handle.

Locked.

“Find something.””

Daniel searched the shelves.

Vanessa stood at the doorway.

Her face was unreadable.

Naomi turned toward her.

“You.””

Vanessa flinched.

“You knew about this room.””

“No.””

“You've been here before.””

“No.””

“Then why aren't you surprised?””

Vanessa looked at Maisie's hair clip.

“I am.””

Naomi stepped toward her.

“You're lying.””

“Naomi—”

“You've been trying to take her from me.””

“That's not true.””

“You told Graham I was neglecting her.””

“I never said that.””

“You sent those reports.””

“I didn't.””

“You gave Daniel information.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“He told you that?””

Daniel stood up.

“I can prove it.””

He pulled the flash drive from his pocket.

Vanessa's eyes changed.

“Give me that.””

Daniel backed away.

“No.””

“What is on it?””

“Everything.””

Vanessa lunged.

Daniel moved aside.

The flash drive fell.

Graham caught it.

Vanessa stared at him.

“Graham, please.””

“What did you put on there?””

“Nothing.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You expect him to believe that after tonight?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You promised.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“I promised nothing.””

Graham heard the word.

“Promised what?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Please.””

“What did you promise him?””

Daniel answered.

“She promised to protect my brother.””

Graham looked at Vanessa.

“From what?””

“She knew his treatment was being paid for through a Mercer account.””

Graham's face changed.

“My family?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother arranged it.””

Vanessa whispered,

“I didn't hurt anyone.””

Graham stared at her.

“You made me think Naomi was a bad mother.””

“I wanted you to listen to me.””

“You made reports.””

“I panicked.””

“You followed my daughter.””

“I never touched her.””

“You brought Daniel into her life.””

“I was trying to help.””

Naomi laughed, devastated.

“Help?””

She pointed at the locked door.

“She's missing.””

Vanessa looked toward it.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.

“I didn't take her.””

Graham heard something.

A faint sound.

Three taps.

Everyone stopped.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Naomi whispered,

“Maisie?””

Silence.

Then another three taps.

Graham dropped to his knees.

“She's behind there.””

Daniel examined the steel door.

“There has to be another entrance.””

They searched the walls.

Nothing.

Then Graham noticed a ventilation grate near the ceiling.

“Could she have gotten through that?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Too small.””

Another sound.

A tiny sob.

Naomi pressed both hands over her mouth.

“Maisie!””

This time, a muffled voice answered.

“Mommy?””

Naomi nearly collapsed.

“I'm here!””

Graham looked at Daniel.

“Open it.””

Daniel found an old emergency key box mounted beside the pipes.

The glass was already broken.

Inside was a key.

He grabbed it.

The lock turned.

The steel door groaned open.

Beyond it was a narrow corridor.

And at the far end sat Maisie.

She was curled beneath a blanket.

Naomi screamed her name and ran.

Graham followed.

Maisie reached for them.

“Mommy!””

Naomi pulled her into her arms.

“Oh, baby.””

Graham knelt beside them.

“Are you hurt?””

Maisie shook her head.

“Who brought you here?””

The little girl pointed down the corridor.

“That lady.””

Graham looked up.

Vanessa stood frozen in the doorway.

“No,” she whispered.

Maisie looked directly at her.

“Not her.””

Everyone stopped.

Maisie pointed farther down the corridor.

“The other lady.””

Graham's blood ran cold.

“What other lady?””

“She said you were sleeping.””

Naomi clutched Maisie tighter.

“What did she look like, sweetheart?””

Maisie thought carefully.

“She had Grandma's perfume.””

Eleanor.

Graham stood abruptly.

“My mother?””

Daniel's expression went pale.

“No.””

“What?””

Daniel stared at the corridor.

“She couldn't have.””

“Why?””

“Because this corridor doesn't lead outside.””

Graham looked at him.

“Then where does it lead?””

Daniel pointed toward a second door at the end.

“A private elevator.””

Graham ran.

The elevator doors were open.

Empty.

On the floor lay a woman's scarf.

Graham recognized it instantly.

His mother's.

His phone rang.

He answered.

“Mom?””

Eleanor's voice was trembling.

“Graham, listen to me.””

“Where are you?””

“I need you to come home.””

“My daughter was just found in a locked room.””

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered,

“You found her?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

“Then you know.””

“Know what?””

Eleanor's voice broke.

“That Vanessa wasn't trying to take Maisie for herself.””

Graham stared into the empty elevator.

“Then who was she taking her for?””

May you like

His mother answered with five words.

“The woman who raised me.””
