Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Plan

“The woman who raised me.””

Graham repeated the words slowly.

His mother didn't answer.

He could hear only her breathing on the other end of the phone.

“Mom,” he said, “who are you talking about?””

Eleanor swallowed.

“My mother.””

Graham stared at the empty elevator.

“Your mother died years ago.””

“No.””

His skin prickled.

“She didn't.””

“What?””

“I told everyone she was dead.””

Naomi stepped closer.

Graham looked at her.

“She’s alive?””

“She has been for years.””

“Why would you pretend she was dead?””

“Because she wanted me to.””

Graham’s voice sharpened.

“Where is she?””

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Your grandmother owns a house in Vermont.””

Graham's mind struggled to catch up.

“Grandmother?””

“You've never met her.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn't want you to.””

Naomi's face had gone pale.

She looked at Maisie, who was still wrapped in the blanket.

“Graham,” she whispered, “we need to leave.””

He nodded.

But before he could move, Eleanor said something that stopped him.

“Your grandmother knows about the room.””

Graham stared into the phone.

“What room?””

“The one under St. Mary's.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

Graham looked at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“Not about this.””

“Then what did you know?””

“I knew your family had secrets.””

“That's not an answer.””

Naomi looked at Maisie.

“I knew they were afraid of someone.””

“Who?””

“Your grandmother.””

They left through the hospital's emergency entrance.

Daniel drove because Graham's hands were still shaking.

Naomi sat in the back with Maisie.

The little girl had fallen asleep against her mother's chest.

Every few minutes, Naomi looked down to make sure she was breathing.

Graham sat beside her.

No one spoke.

Finally, Daniel broke the silence.

“Eleanor never told you about the house?””

“No.””

“She wouldn't.””

“What is it?””

Daniel kept his eyes on the road.

“Your grandmother has spent her whole life controlling that family.””

Graham looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because I met her.””

“When?””

“After Maisie was born.””

Graham's face tightened.

“You were there?””

Daniel nodded.

“She asked me to do something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Take Maisie.””

Naomi looked up sharply.

Graham turned.

“You tried to kidnap my daughter?””

“No.””

Daniel's voice was immediate.

“I refused.””

“Then why would she ask?””

“Because she believed Maisie belonged with the Mercer family.””

Naomi's arms tightened around her daughter.

“She said Naomi was unfit.””

Graham closed his eyes.

That sentence sounded horribly familiar.

He remembered the reports.

The complaints.

The accusations.

The little things that had slowly made him question Naomi.

A missed appointment.

A school form.

A bruise.

A photo.

All of it suddenly looked different.

“How much of it was fabricated?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Most of it.””

Graham looked at Naomi.

“I believed some of it.””

“I know.””

“I’m sorry.””

She looked away.

“Sorry doesn't erase what it did to her.””

He glanced at Maisie.

“No.””

“It doesn't.””

The car fell silent again.

Then Graham asked,

“Why did my grandmother want Maisie?””

Daniel's answer came slowly.

“Because she thinks the Mercer name is dying.””

Graham frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She wanted an heir.””

“But I'm her grandson.””

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked at him in the mirror.

“She believes your family loses its power if the bloodline leaves the estate.””

Graham stared.

“So this is about money?””

“Power.””

Daniel's answer was blunt.

“Your grandmother built everything around the family name. Businesses. Properties.

Political connections. Charities. She sees people as pieces on a board.””

Naomi whispered,

“And Maisie?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Was the most important piece.””

The Mercer estate was almost empty when they returned.

Richard met them at the front door.

The moment he saw Maisie in Naomi's arms, his expression crumpled.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

He reached for her.

Naomi stepped back.

Richard stopped.

“I just want to know she's safe.””

“She is.””

He nodded.

Then he looked at Graham.

“Did you speak to your mother?””

“Yes.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“What did she tell you?””

“That her mother is alive.””

Richard's expression changed.

“So you know.””

“I know enough.””

“Graham…”

“Did you know she wanted Maisie taken?””

Richard didn't answer.

Graham stepped closer.

“Dad.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Naomi's face hardened.

Graham stared at his father.

“You knew.””

“I knew she wanted custody.””

“You knew she planned to take my daughter?””

“I knew your grandmother believed it was necessary.””

“Necessary?””

Richard looked exhausted.

“She convinced herself she was preserving the family.””

Graham laughed bitterly.

“She kidnapped a four-year-old to preserve a family?””

“She never called it kidnapping.””

“What did she call it?””

“Rescue.””

Naomi shook her head.

“My God.””

Richard looked at her.

“She believed you were destroying Maisie's future.””

Naomi's voice trembled.

“By loving her?””

Richard didn't respond.

Graham turned away.

“What did Vanessa promise her?””

Richard looked startled.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Vanessa was involved?””

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“No.””

Graham turned back.

“You knew enough to let it happen.””

Richard's eyes dropped.

“She promised the family your daughter would eventually live with us.””

Naomi stared at him.

“Eventually?””

Richard nodded.

“She thought that once Graham believed you were neglecting Maisie, he would take custody.””

“And Vanessa would become the perfect stepmother.””

Richard said nothing.

Naomi let out a broken laugh.

“That woman never wanted my daughter.””

“No,” Richard whispered.

“She wanted the position your daughter would give her.””

Graham looked toward the staircase.

“Where is Vanessa?””

Richard's expression changed.

“Gone.””

“When?””

“Where?””

“She left after your mother called.””

Graham's phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was trembling.

“I didn't know she'd take it this far.””

“Where are you?””

“I left.””

“Tell me where.””

“I can't.””

“Vanessa, this is not a game.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

There was silence.

Then she whispered,

“She knows where you're going.””

Graham's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

“Your grandmother.””

“How?””

“She has people everywhere.””

“Vanessa.””

“I’m sorry.””

“Where are you?””

She began crying.

“I think she knows about Daniel.””

Graham looked at Daniel.

“What about him?””

“She knows he lied.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said,

“She knows everything.””

The call ended.

They found the file in Graham's father's office.

It was hidden behind a false panel in the bookcase.

Richard opened it with a key from his desk.

Inside was a thick collection of documents.

Bank statements.

Hospital records.

Photographs.

Custody papers.

Names.

Dates.

Graham turned pages with increasing disbelief.

One document stopped him.

A legal agreement prepared four years ago.

It named *Naomi Mercer* as the child's primary custodian.

And underneath her name was another line.

*Temporary guardianship to be transferred upon documented parental unfitness.*

Graham stared at it.

“This was prepared before the wedding.””

Richard nodded.

“Before you married Vanessa.””

“So this was planned from the beginning.””

“Yes.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“Who signed it?””

Richard looked away.

“Your grandmother.””

Graham turned another page.

There were payments to a private investigator.

To a school consultant.

To a former nanny.

To someone listed only as *M. Hayes*.

Naomi's face went pale.

“Who's M. Hayes?””

Richard didn't answer.

“Who?””

“My mother’s personal assistant.””

“What did she do?””

“She kept records on you.””

“On me?””

“On Naomi.””

Naomi stopped breathing.

Graham looked at the next page.

Photographs of their apartment.

Maisie at the playground.

Naomi dropping her off at preschool.

Naomi buying groceries.

Every ordinary moment of their lives had been photographed.

“She watched us.””

Richard nodded.

“For how long?””

“Almost four years.””

Naomi's eyes filled with tears.

“All this time…”

Graham took her hand.

It was the first time he'd touched her without anger between them.

She looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Maisie appeared in the doorway.

“Mommy?””

Naomi immediately crouched.

“I'm here.””

Maisie held up a drawing.

“I made this for you.””

Naomi smiled through her tears.

“Thank you, baby.””

Graham looked down.

The drawing showed a house.

Three people stood outside.

Maisie.

Naomi.

And Graham.

Above them was a yellow sun.

But there was something written in red beside the house.

Graham leaned closer.

“What does that say?””

Maisie looked at it.

“Grandma told me to write it.””

Naomi's smile disappeared.

“What did Grandma tell you?””

Maisie pointed.

“It says…”

She sounded out the words carefully.

“*Come home.*”

Nobody moved.

Graham's phone buzzed.

A new message.

Not from Vanessa.

Not from his mother.

Not from an unknown number.

The sender's name appeared clearly.

*Estelle Mercer.*

May you like

One sentence.

*Bring the little girl to Vermont, or I will tell Graham what really happened the night she was born.*
