Chapter 5: The Price of Silence
Graham read the message three times.
*Ask your mother why Daniel Carter was paid to disappear.*
His thumb hovered over the screen.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“What does this mean?””
Vanessa stared at him.
She didn't answer.
That silence was worse than any confession.
“Vanessa.””
She walked toward the kitchen.
“I need some water.””
Graham followed.
“No. You're going to answer me.””
She stopped at the counter.
Her hand trembled as she reached for a glass.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“You knew Daniel.””
“I told you that.””
“You knew enough to tell him where my daughter lives.””
“That isn't what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
Vanessa turned around.
For the first time since Graham had known her, she looked genuinely cornered.
“He contacted me.””
“When?””
“Before the wedding.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“He said he had information about Maisie.””
Graham's voice dropped.
“What information?””
“I didn't believe him.””
“But you kept talking to him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Because I was desperate.””
“For what?””
She swallowed.
“For you to love me the way you loved her.””
Graham went still.
“That has nothing to do with Maisie.””
“It has everything to do with her.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don't get to say that.””
“I was always second, Graham.””
“You were my wife.””
“I was the woman you chose after you lost everything with Naomi.””
“That isn't true.””
“Isn't it?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Every time Maisie walked into a room, I watched you change.””
Graham said nothing.
“She didn't have to say anything,” Vanessa continued.
“She didn't even have to touch you. You'd look at her, and suddenly you weren't my husband anymore. You were her father.””
“You're blaming a four-year-old child because you were insecure?””
Vanessa flinched.
“I didn't blame her.””
“You called her a problem.””
“I was angry.””
“You slapped her mother in front of her.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know.””
Graham stared at her.
The woman standing in front of him wasn't the confident bride from the ballroom.
She looked exhausted.
But he couldn't tell whether the exhaustion was real.
Or another performance.
“You said Daniel had information about Maisie.””
Vanessa nodded.
“What information?””
She looked toward the living room.
“Not here.””
“Why?””
“Because your mother is going to deny everything.””
Graham's expression hardened.
“My mother?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day you'd ask.””
Graham took it.
The envelope was old.
The edges were worn.
His name wasn't written on it.
Instead, there was only one word.
*Daniel.*
He opened it.
A photocopy fell onto the counter.
It was a bank transfer receipt.
Graham's eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The sender was a Mercer family account.
The amount was twenty-five thousand dollars.
The recipient was *Daniel Carter*.
The date was four years ago.
Three days after Maisie was born.
Graham looked up.
“Why did my family pay him?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“I swear I don't.””
“Then why do you have this?””
“Daniel gave it to me.””
“Why?””
“He wanted more money.””
Graham stared at her.
“You were being blackmailed?””
Vanessa's silence answered him.
She sat down.
“I met Daniel six months before the wedding.””
Graham remained standing.
“What did he want?””
“At first, nothing.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“He wanted to talk.””
“About Maisie?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“He said your mother had made him disappear after the birth.””
Graham's heart pounded.
“Disappear?””
“He said she threatened him.””
“With what?””
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“He wouldn't tell me everything.””
“Then what did he tell you?””
Vanessa looked up.
“That Maisie's medical records were changed.””
Graham froze.
“What records?””
“The ones Naomi showed you.””
His mind flashed back to the paperwork.
The altered emergency contact.
The DNA request.
His mother's name.
He stepped back.
“Who changed them?””
“Your mother.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Did Daniel know?””
“Yes.””
“Did Naomi know?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't think so.””
Graham turned away.
The room seemed too small.
Too bright.
Every explanation he had built around his life was beginning to fracture.
Then another thought struck him.
“What did Daniel want from you?””
Vanessa's eyes lowered.
“Money.””
“How much?””
She hesitated.
“Fifty thousand.””
Graham gave a humorless laugh.
“So you paid him?””
“No.””
“But the transfer says—”
“That was your mother.””
He stared at her.
“Then why were you involved?””
“Because Daniel thought I could get it from you.””
“You never asked me.””
“He knew you wouldn't give it to him.””
“So what did you do?””
Vanessa stood.
“I listened.””
“To what?””
Her expression became unreadable.
“To the story he told me about Naomi.””
Graham's voice was cold.
“And what story was that?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He said Naomi knew Daniel before Maisie was born.””
Graham shook his head.
“That isn't possible.””
“I thought so too.””
“Then why believe him?””
“Because he had photographs.””
Graham's stomach dropped.
“Of Naomi?””
“Yes.””
“With him?””
Vanessa nodded.
“How many?””
“Dozens.””
“Where are they?””
“I don't have them.””
“Who does?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Your mother.””
Graham didn't remember leaving the house.
He only remembered driving.
His father's number came up twice.
He ignored it.
His mother's number came up once.
He ignored that too.
By the time he reached the old Mercer estate, his hands were shaking.
The housekeeper let him in without asking questions.
His mother was in the study.
She was sitting at the desk, sorting through papers.
She looked up.
The moment she saw his face, she knew.
“What happened?””
Graham placed the photograph on the desk.
Then the bank transfer.
Then the message from the unknown number.
“Tell me the truth.””
Eleanor stared at the papers.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get these?””
“That doesn't matter.””
“Graham—”
“Why did you pay Daniel Carter twenty-five thousand dollars?””
Silence.
His mother sat back.
“Who told you?””
“Answer me.””
She closed her eyes.
“It wasn't what you think.””
“That sentence always means exactly what I think.””
“Your father and I were trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She looked at him.
“From a scandal that could have destroyed your life.””
“What scandal?””
“We believed Daniel was exploiting Naomi.””
Graham's expression changed.
“How?””
“He was involved with her before you met her.””
“No.””
“He claimed they knew each other.””
“You said there were photographs.””
“Yes.””
“Of Naomi and Daniel?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Where are they?””
“I destroyed them.””
Graham stared.
“Why?””
“Because they were going to be used against you.””
“Used how?””
“Daniel threatened to expose Naomi.””
Graham's voice shook.
“Expose her for what?””
Eleanor hesitated.
Then whispered,
“For being married to another man.””
The room went silent.
Graham felt something inside him drop.
“Naomi was married?””
“No.””
His mother looked down.
“Not Naomi.””
Graham frowned.
“I don't understand.””
“Daniel claimed Naomi had been involved with someone else.””
“That's what you believed?””
“We didn't know what to believe.””
“Then why pay him?””
“Because he wouldn't go away.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you were about to become a father.””
His mother stood.
“You were happy, Graham. For the first time in years, you were happy.””
“So you lied to me.””
“We protected you.””
“You took twenty-five thousand dollars out of a family account and paid a man to disappear.””
“We had no choice.””
“You always have a choice.””
Eleanor's eyes filled.
“No. We didn't.””
Graham stepped closer.
“What aren't you telling me?””
She said nothing.
“Mom.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, I could destroy your relationship with your daughter.””
Graham's face went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor looked toward the study door.
Then back at him.
“Ask Naomi what happened the night Maisie was born.””
Graham's breathing stopped.
“You said you didn't know.””
“I said what I had to say.””
“Why?””
“Because there was one thing Daniel knew that you didn't.””
“What?””
Eleanor's lips trembled.
“He wasn't trying to prove Maisie wasn't your daughter.””
Graham stared at her.
“Then what was he trying to prove?””
Before she could answer, the study door opened.
Richard stood there.
He looked at his wife.
Then at Graham.
And said quietly,
May you like
“Because Daniel is Maisie's biological father.””
Graham's world went silent.
