Chapter 3: What Was Hidden in Maisie’s Room

Graham sat in his car for nearly ten minutes before he drove home.

Vanessa’s final words kept circling in his head.

Something Naomi hid from you.

He had heard the same accusation in a dozen different forms since the wedding, but this felt different.

Because this time, Vanessa had sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Rain slid across the windshield as he pulled into the Mercer driveway. The house looked exactly as it always had—white stone, tall windows, perfectly trimmed hedges.

But Graham no longer felt at home there.

He shut off the engine.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

*Come upstairs. Please don’t ask your parents about this yet.*

Graham stared at the screen.

Then he went inside.

The house was quiet.

His parents were still out, just as Vanessa had said.

He found her in Maisie’s old room.

The door was half open.

Vanessa stood beside the little bed, her arms folded tightly across her chest.

Graham stopped in the doorway.

“Why are you in here?””

She looked at him.

“I told you I found something.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Look under the mattress.””

Graham’s expression hardened.

“Vanessa, stop making this sound like a crime scene.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell me what you found.””

“I want you to see it yourself.””

He walked into the room.

Maisie had not slept there in weeks, but traces of her still remained everywhere. A stuffed rabbit sat against the pillow. A pink blanket was neatly folded at the foot of the bed. A crayon drawing of three stick figures was taped above the desk.

Graham picked it up.

A tall man.

A little girl.

A woman.

The three of them were holding hands.

He smiled despite himself.

“Who drew this?””

“Maisie.””

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

Graham looked at Vanessa.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Her expression changed.

“Because she drew Naomi with you.””

He stared at the picture.

“So?””

“So where am I?””

Graham said nothing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She erased me.””

“That’s a child’s drawing.””

“She knows exactly who I am.””

“She’s four.””

Vanessa let out a slow breath.

“Fine.””

She lifted the mattress.

There was an envelope taped beneath it.

Graham’s stomach dropped.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

He pulled it free.

His name was written across the front.

*Graham.*

Nothing else.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You opened it?””

She shook her head.

“I wanted you to.””

Graham broke the seal.

Inside was a single photograph.

He stared at it.

Then stared again.

It was a picture of Maisie standing in front of a hospital building.

She was wearing a yellow coat.

Beside her stood Naomi.

And beside Naomi was a man Graham had never seen before.

His face was partially turned away from the camera.

Graham’s heart began pounding.

“Who is that?””

“I don’t know.””

“Where was this taken?””

“Look at the back.””

He flipped the photograph over.

There was handwriting.

*September 17. Tell him before he finds out from someone else.*

Graham frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

“I think Naomi knows something about Maisie that you don’t.””

Graham turned on her.

“What exactly are you accusing her of?””

“I’m not accusing her of anything.””

“You brought me here. You showed me this.””

“I said I think she’s hiding something.””

“That’s not the same thing?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I think she’s terrified you’ll discover it.””

Graham looked back at the photograph.

The hospital.

The date.

The stranger.

Something about it felt wrong.

But before he could say anything, the front door opened downstairs.

His mother’s voice echoed through the hall.

“Graham?””

Vanessa immediately stepped away from him.

Eleanor appeared at the top of the stairs.

She took one look at them standing inside Maisie’s room.

Then at the photograph in Graham’s hand.

Her face went pale.

“What are you doing with that?””

Graham turned.

“You know this picture?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

“Mom?””

Her eyes moved to Vanessa.

“Where did you get it?””

Vanessa said softly, “I found it here.””

Eleanor walked into the room.

“Give it to me.””

Graham didn’t move.

“Why?””

“Because I said so.””

His father, Richard, appeared behind her.

“What’s going on?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Richard…”

He stepped forward.

Then he saw the photograph.

His expression changed immediately.

Graham noticed.

“You both know something.””

“No,” Richard said.

It was too fast.

Graham stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Watch your tone.””

“You recognized this picture.””

“I recognized the hospital.””

“Why?””

Neither parent answered.

Vanessa looked between them.

“What hospital is it?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“St. Mary’s.””

Graham’s heart stopped for a beat.

St. Mary’s.

That was where Maisie had been born.

He looked at the photograph again.

The date was three days before Maisie’s fourth birthday.

“What happened there?””

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

“Nothing you need to concern yourself with.””

“That is my daughter.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Your mother and I agreed years ago that this matter was private.””

Graham looked from his father to his mother.

“Private?””

His voice rose.

“Private from me?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Graham, you need to trust us.””

He laughed once, bitterly.

“Everyone keeps asking me to trust them.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You.””

Then at Naomi in his mind.

“Her.””

Then his parents.

“And now both of you.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Eleanor finally whispered,

“You were never supposed to see that photograph.””

Graham froze.

“Why?””

She glanced at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“Because it was taken during a difficult time.””

“What difficult time?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why not?””

“Because Naomi asked us not to.””

Graham’s face went blank.

“Naomi asked you?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

Eleanor immediately regretted the words.

Richard closed his eyes.

Graham looked at both of them.

“So this is real.””

“No one said that,” Richard replied.

“You just did.””

“I said Naomi asked us not to discuss it.””

“Why would she ask you to hide something about my daughter?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She shook her head.

“I’m sorry.””

Graham walked out.

“Graham,” Vanessa called.

He kept moving.

She followed him down the stairs.

“Where are you going?””

“To Naomi’s.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“You can’t just go there.””

He pulled free.

“Why?””

“Because she’ll manipulate you.””

Graham turned sharply.

“You don’t get to tell me what she’ll do.””

“She’s been lying to you!””

“So have you.””

Vanessa went still.

He regretted saying it the moment the words left his mouth.

But he couldn’t take them back.

She looked wounded.

“I’m your wife.””

Graham stared at her.

“That’s supposed to mean I stop asking questions?””

Vanessa said nothing.

He opened the front door.

Behind him, Eleanor spoke quietly.

“Graham.””

He stopped.

“Your daughter was at that hospital because of Naomi.””

He turned around slowly.

“What happened to Maisie?””

Eleanor’s lips trembled.

“We don’t know.””

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“Naomi said she had everything under control.””

Graham’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what was the man doing there?””

Eleanor looked at Richard.

Neither spoke.

That silence was enough.

Graham walked out into the rain.

Naomi opened the apartment door after the second knock.

She looked surprised to see him.

“Graham?””

He walked inside without waiting.

“Who is he?””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

He held up the photograph.

“Who is this man?””

For a moment, all the color drained from her face.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

She looked at the photograph.

Then at him.

“Who gave you this?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters to me.””

“Who is he?””

Naomi closed the door.

“Graham, you need to leave.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Maisie’s sleeping.””

His eyes softened instantly.

He lowered his voice.

“Please.””

Naomi stared at him.

The anger in her face slowly disappeared.

What replaced it frightened him more.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You really found it.””

“Yes.””

“Then they told you.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I knew this would happen.””

Graham stepped closer.

“What happened at St. Mary’s?””

Naomi swallowed.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because Maisie has already heard too much.””

He looked at the hallway.

“Is she in danger?””

Naomi said nothing.

“Naomi.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

Graham exhaled.

“Then tell me the truth.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

“When I could prove it.””

“Prove what?””

She looked at him for several seconds.

Then she whispered,

“That the man in that photograph is the reason Vanessa has been lying to you.””

Graham’s entire body went still.

“What does Vanessa have to do with him?””

Before Naomi could answer, a sharp sound came from the hallway.

A child’s voice.

“Mommy?””

They both turned.

Maisie stood there, rubbing her eyes.

She looked at Graham.

Then at the photograph in his hand.

Her little face changed.

She walked closer.

“Daddy…”

Graham crouched down.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

Maisie pointed at the photograph.

“I know him.””

Graham felt the room disappear around him.

“You know this man?””

Maisie nodded.

May you like

Then she whispered five words that made Naomi cover her mouth in horror.

“He came to see me yesterday.””
