Chapter 8: The Last Promise of a Mother

When the lights returned, Daniel was lying on the concrete floor.

His ears were ringing.

The smell of gunpowder filled the basement.

"AMELIA!""

He pushed himself up.

Amelia was beside the table, holding her arm.

Marcus was on one knee.

Victor was gone.

And Ethan was no longer in the man's arms.

Daniel scrambled toward the far side of the room.

Then he heard it.

A tiny cry.

He turned.

The newborn was lying safely inside a padded basket beside the basement stairs.

Daniel scooped him up.

"My boy. My beautiful boy.""

He pressed Ethan against his chest.

The baby cried louder.

Daniel rocked him gently.

"You're safe. Daddy's here.""

Marcus struggled to stand.

Blood was running down his left arm.

"Victor escaped through the service tunnel.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Forget Victor! What happened to you?""

"It's nothing.""

"You're bleeding!""

Marcus gave a weak smile.

"I've had worse.""

Amelia stood slowly.

"Where is Victor going?""

Marcus pointed toward the basement's rear exit.

"There's an old road leading to the lake.""

Daniel handed Ethan carefully to Amelia.

"Stay with him.""

Then he turned toward Marcus.

"You're going to tell me everything. But first, we're getting out of here.""

They left the residence through the side entrance.

Daniel's security director arrived minutes later with two officers.

He immediately arranged medical assistance for Marcus and secured the property.

Daniel insisted that Ethan be taken directly back to the hospital.

But before leaving, he noticed something on the basement floor.

A small leather wallet.

It had fallen from Victor's jacket during the struggle.

Daniel picked it up.

Inside was a photograph of Richard Whitmore standing beside a woman.

The woman looked familiar.

He examined the picture more closely.

It was Margaret.

His mother.

She was much younger, wearing the same silver pendant Amelia had given Laura.

But there was something strange about the photograph.

Margaret was holding a newspaper dated only three months earlier.

Daniel's hands began trembling.

His mother had been alive recently.

He turned the photograph over.

A handwritten message appeared.

October 14. The second attempt failed. Move her before the children discover the truth.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Second attempt?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Your mother escaped once before.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Tell me everything.""

Marcus sat on the back seat of the SUV while the security officers treated his arm.

"Twenty-seven years ago, after Margaret disappeared, Robert told everyone she had died. But I knew she was alive.""

"How?""

"Because I received a letter from her.""

Marcus reached into his pocket and removed a small, folded envelope.

It had been worn from years of handling.

Daniel opened it.

The letter was short.

Marcus, I am safe for now. Please protect Daniel and Amelia. Richard knows where I am, and Robert has agreed to help him keep me away. I don't know how much longer I can run.

Daniel looked up.

"My father helped Richard?""

Marcus nodded.

"At first, Robert believed he was protecting the company. Later, he realized what Richard had done.""

"Then why didn't he bring her home?""

"Because Richard had something on him.""

"What?""

Marcus looked toward Amelia.

"Your father's involvement in a financial scheme that could have sent him to prison.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Everything was connected.

The trust.

The inheritance.

His mother's disappearance.

His father's silence.

And now his newborn son.

"Where did you get this letter?""

"Margaret sent it to me through a nurse at the private facility.""

"Did you answer?""

"I tried. But the letters stopped.""

Daniel looked down.

"Why did you never tell me?""

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I promised your mother I would keep you safe.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You keep saying that. But what about the truth? What about my right to know my own mother?""

Marcus lowered his head.

"I failed you.""

The words were simple.

But they carried decades of regret.

Daniel looked toward Amelia.

She was holding Ethan carefully.

The newborn had finally stopped crying.

Amelia gently touched his cheek.

"He looks peaceful.""

Daniel approached her.

"Thank you for coming after us.""

She smiled sadly.

"I wasn't going to let another child in this family grow up without knowing where he came from.""

Daniel looked at her.

Then, without thinking, he embraced her.

Amelia stiffened for a moment.

Then she wrapped her arms around him.

For the first time in their lives, the brother and sister held each other.

Neither spoke.

They didn't need to.

But the moment was interrupted by Daniel's phone.

An unknown number.

He answered.

"Who is this?""

A woman's voice whispered.

"Daniel?""

His heart stopped.

"Mom?""

"Yes, sweetheart.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"Where are you? We know you're alive!""

Margaret began crying.

"I've waited so long to hear your voice.""

"Tell me where you are. I'm coming.""

"No. You must listen first.""

Daniel looked at Amelia.

She had heard the voice too.

"Mom, we're together. Amelia is here.""

There was a long silence.

Then Margaret sobbed.

"My babies.""

Amelia took the phone.

"Mom?""

"My darling girl.""

Amelia covered her mouth.

"Why didn't you come back?""

"I tried.""

"You let me grow up believing you didn't want me!""

"I never stopped wanting you.""

"Then why?""

Margaret's voice broke.

"Because Richard threatened to kill you both if I returned.""

Daniel took the phone again.

"Where are you now?""

"I'm in a small care facility in Maine. I've been here for years.""

"Who put you there?""

"Robert.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Why?""

"He believed Richard would find me if I lived anywhere else. He said he was protecting me.""

"Was he?""

Margaret hesitated.

"At first, perhaps. But later, I discovered that Robert was using my disappearance to control the inheritance.""

Daniel felt sick.

"Mom, what inheritance?""

"The Whitmore family trust.""

He looked at Amelia.

"Why does Ethan's birth matter?""

Margaret went silent.

Then she spoke slowly.

"Because your father changed the trust after you were born. He made a promise to your grandfather that the first child born to the next generation would inherit control of the original estate.""

Daniel frowned.

"But there are two children. Me and Amelia.""

"Exactly.""

"Then why does Richard want Ethan?""

"Because he believes Ethan's birth will activate the trust and allow him to claim control through you.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That makes no sense. I'm the child's father.""

"Daniel, there's something you don't know about the trust.""

"What?""

Margaret took a shaky breath.

"The original document names both my children as equal beneficiaries. But there's a separate clause. If either of my children has a child before the trust is formally restored, Richard can challenge the entire inheritance.""

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"How?""

"By claiming the family lineage was concealed.""

Daniel frowned.

"But I'm Robert's legal son.""

"Yes. But Richard has been collecting documents for years. He wants to prove that the family records were falsified.""

Daniel looked at Amelia.

"Why would that matter?""

Margaret's voice became urgent.

"Because Richard doesn't just want the money. He wants to erase every person who can challenge his control.""

Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message had arrived.

It was from the hospital.

*URGENT: MRS. WHITMORE HAS REQUESTED THAT YOU RETURN IMMEDIATELY.*

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Mom, I have to go. Someone may be threatening Laura.""

Margaret suddenly raised her voice.

"Daniel, wait!""

"What?""

"Before you go, I need you to ask Marcus one question.""

Daniel turned toward the chauffeur.

"What question?""

Margaret whispered:

"Ask him what happened to the first child I gave birth to.""

Daniel froze.

His eyes slowly moved toward Marcus.

The chauffeur's face had gone completely white.

"First child?"" Daniel repeated.

Margaret began crying.

"Daniel, you and Amelia were not my only children.""

The phone disconnected.

Daniel stood motionless.

He looked at Marcus.

"How many children did my mother have?""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Then he whispered:

"Three.""

Daniel felt the world collapse around him.

"Who was the third?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Amelia stepped forward.

"Marcus, tell us.""

The older man looked at her.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Your mother gave birth to another baby before you were born.""

Daniel stared.

"Where is that child?""

Marcus's voice trembled.

"He's been living under a different name.""

Daniel grabbed his arm.

"WHO?""

Marcus finally answered.

"Victor Hayes.""

The chauffeur who had just helped rescue Ethan.

The man who had spent ten years protecting Daniel's family.

May you like

The man who had kidnapped his son.

He was also Daniel's biological brother.
