Chapter 9: The Secret Beneath the Greenhouse
The hospital corridor smelled of disinfectant and fresh coffee.
Daniel sat outside the emergency treatment room with blood on his shirt.
Not his blood.
Victor's.
Amelia paced back and forth.
Marcus sat silently in a wheelchair, his injured arm bandaged.
Laura had been taken to another room for observation.
Ethan was safely back in the maternity ward.
For the first time since the morning, the entire family was under police protection.
But Daniel couldn't relax.
He kept hearing Victor's final words.
She's beneath the Whitmore estate.
At first, he had thought Victor meant his mother was buried beneath the property.
But Amelia had insisted there was another possibility.
A hidden room.
A shelter.
A place where Margaret might have been kept alive.
Daniel stood.
"How long until the doctor comes out?""
Marcus looked at his watch.
"He's been inside for forty minutes.""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I need answers.""
Amelia stopped pacing.
"Victor might have them.""
Daniel looked at her.
"If he survives.""
She nodded.
Neither spoke.
Then the emergency room doors opened.
A doctor stepped out.
"Mr. Whitmore?""
Daniel approached immediately.
"How is he?""
"The bullet passed through his upper shoulder. He lost a considerable amount of blood, but he's stable.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Can I see him?""
"Not yet. We need to monitor him.""
"Please. He's my brother.""
The doctor looked at him for a moment.
Then nodded.
"Five minutes. Keep the conversation calm.""
Daniel entered the room.
Victor lay beneath a white blanket.
His face was pale.
A monitor beeped beside him.
When he saw Daniel, he looked away.
"Go home.""
Daniel pulled a chair beside the bed.
"No.""
"I don't want your pity.""
"Good. Because I didn't bring any.""
Victor gave a weak laugh.
"Still the businessman.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Why did you do it?""
Victor stared at the ceiling.
"Which part?""
"All of it.""
Victor closed his eyes.
"Richard told me my mother abandoned me. He told me she had chosen you and Amelia.""
"That wasn't true.""
"I know that now.""
Daniel remained silent.
Victor turned his head.
"Do you know what it's like to grow up thinking your own mother didn't want you?""
Daniel swallowed.
"No.""
"I spent years believing I was unwanted. Every time I saw another child with their parents, I wondered what was wrong with me.""
Victor's voice cracked.
"When Richard found me, he told me the Whitmores had stolen my life. He showed me documents. Letters. Photographs.""
"Why didn't you question him?""
"Because I wanted to believe him.""
Daniel looked at his brother.
"Then why did you stay close to me?""
Victor gave a bitter smile.
"At first, I wanted to understand you. I wanted to see what kind of man my brother had become.""
"And later?""
"Later, I hated you.""
Daniel didn't move.
Victor continued.
"You had everything. The mansion. The business.
The family name. Even the woman I had spent my life searching for was apparently somewhere nearby, waiting for you.""
Daniel shook his head.
"None of that was my choice.""
"I know.""
Victor turned his face away.
"I know that now.""
Daniel leaned back.
"Where is my mother?""
Victor swallowed.
"Under the greenhouse.""
"Explain.""
"There's a passage beneath the old greenhouse. Your grandfather built it during the Cold War. It connects to a shelter under the estate.""
Daniel stood.
"Is she there?""
Victor nodded.
"Richard kept her there for years.""
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
"Why?""
"Because she knew about the original trust. And because she refused to sign the final transfer.""
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""
Victor gave a weak smile.
"Because I was still hoping Richard would give me what he promised.""
"What?""
"Control of the company. A place in the family. The right to use my real name.""
Daniel stared at him.
"You could have had a family without stealing my son.""
Victor closed his eyes.
"I know.""
For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.
Then he asked the question that had been haunting him.
"Did you know about Ethan before he was born?""
Victor nodded.
"Richard showed me the medical reports.""
Daniel frowned.
"What medical reports?""
"Your father's old genetic records. He wanted me to know that the baby might carry the family's mixed ancestry.""
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"So this was planned?""
"Richard believed the baby's birth would trigger a legal dispute over the trust. He wanted to control the child before you could register him as an heir.""
Daniel stared at the floor.
"Did you ever intend to hurt Ethan?""
Victor looked directly at him.
"No.""
"Then why take him?""
"Because Richard said he would only be held until you signed the documents.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"No.""
Victor swallowed.
"I don't expect you to forgive me.""
Daniel stood.
"Good.""
He turned toward the door.
Then Victor spoke again.
"Daniel.""
He stopped.
"There's something else.""
Daniel looked back.
Victor struggled to raise his head.
"Richard wasn't the only person involved in your mother's disappearance.""
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"Who else?""
Victor looked toward the hospital ceiling.
"Your father.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Robert?""
Victor nodded.
"Your father helped build the shelter. He knew Margaret was there. He visited her.""
Daniel felt sick.
"How often?""
"Once a year.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father had spent years pretending to mourn a woman he knew was alive.
He had allowed his son to grow up believing his mother was dead.
And all the while, she had been hidden beneath the family estate.
"Why didn't he release her?""
Victor whispered:
"Because she knew he had signed the original trust documents using a false identity.""
Daniel looked up.
"What?""
Victor explained that Robert had been using a different legal identity to move family assets through overseas companies.
Margaret had discovered the scheme and threatened to expose him.
Richard had helped Robert hide her.
But when Robert died, Richard inherited control of the operation.
Daniel shook his head.
"My father wasn't just hiding a secret. He was running a criminal operation.""
Victor nodded.
"That's why he left the documents with Marcus.""
Daniel frowned.
"Marcus?""
Victor nodded.
"Your father wanted someone outside the family to preserve the evidence.""
Daniel remembered the old brass key.
The hidden archive.
The letters.
Everything was connected.
He left the hospital room and found Amelia waiting.
"He's alive," Daniel told her.
She exhaled.
"Thank God.""
"But he admitted Mom is beneath the greenhouse.""
Amelia covered her mouth.
"Then she's alive?""
"We don't know.""
Marcus slowly stood.
"I know how to get inside.""
Daniel turned.
"Then we're going.""
Marcus shook his head.
"We need police support. If Richard knows we've discovered the shelter, he may have moved her.""
Daniel immediately called the detective handling the case.
Within twenty minutes, a team of officers was assembled.
They drove toward the Whitmore estate under police escort.
The night was falling when they arrived.
Rain began tapping against the SUV windows.
Daniel stepped out.
The greenhouse stood behind the mansion.
Its glass panels were cracked, and vines covered the metal frame.
He remembered playing there as a child.
His mother used to take him inside and show him how to care for roses.
He had forgotten how much he loved that place.
Marcus walked toward the far corner.
"Here.""
He moved an old wooden shelf.
Beneath it was a metal panel.
Amelia knelt beside him.
"Is this it?""
Marcus nodded.
He inserted the brass key.
A heavy click sounded.
The panel opened.
Cold air rose from the darkness.
A narrow staircase descended beneath the greenhouse.
Daniel turned on his flashlight.
"Stay behind me.""
The officers moved first.
They descended slowly.
At the bottom was a long concrete corridor.
The walls were lined with electrical cables and old storage cabinets.
Then Daniel saw something.
A small wooden chair.
A blanket.
A half-empty glass of water.
Someone had been living there.
"Mom?""
His voice echoed.
No answer.
They continued.
At the end of the corridor was a metal door.
Marcus tried the handle.
Locked.
An officer forced it open.
The room beyond was small but clean.
There was a bed.
A table.
A medicine cabinet.
And photographs covering one wall.
Daniel approached them.
They showed Margaret at different ages.
Margaret holding newborn Daniel.
Margaret holding baby Amelia.
Margaret standing beside Victor.
There were also photographs of Daniel as a child.
His first day at school.
His graduation.
His wedding.
And one recent photograph.
Daniel holding Ethan outside the hospital nursery.
His mother had been watching his entire life.
He felt his knees weaken.
"Mom?""
A faint sound came from behind a second door.
Amelia rushed forward.
"Mom!""
The officers opened it.
Inside was a small room.
An elderly woman lay on a narrow bed.
Her hair was completely white.
Her face was thin.
But her eyes...
Daniel knew those eyes.
"Mom?""
The woman slowly turned.
For several seconds, she stared at him.
Then tears began running down her cheeks.
"My Daniel.""
He fell beside the bed.
"Mom!""
She lifted a trembling hand and touched his face.
"My beautiful boy.""
Amelia dropped to her knees beside them.
"Mom, I'm here.""
Margaret looked at her daughter.
Then she began sobbing.
"My babies. Both of you.""
Daniel held her hand.
"Why didn't you come home?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Richard?""
"Of what he would do to you.""
Daniel looked around the room.
"Did he keep you here?""
Margaret nodded.
"He told me I could leave if I signed the documents.""
"What documents?""
"The transfer of the trust. And a statement saying I had voluntarily abandoned my children.""
Daniel felt anger rise in his chest.
"Did you sign?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Never.""
Amelia kissed her mother's hand.
"You're coming home now.""
Margaret looked at her.
Then at Daniel.
And suddenly her expression changed.
She grabbed his wrist.
"Daniel, listen to me.""
"What is it?""
"Richard isn't the one who has been controlling everything.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
Margaret's voice became urgent.
"There's someone else.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Margaret, who?""
She looked directly at him.
Then she whispered a name.
"Robert.""
Daniel froze.
"Mom, my father is dead.""
Margaret began shaking her head.
"Not the Robert you think.""
She pointed toward the photographs.
"Your father died eight years ago. But the man who signed the documents after his death...""
Her voice broke.
"That man was his twin brother.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Robert didn't have a twin.""
Margaret took a breath.
"Yes, he did.""
She gripped Daniel's hand tighter.
"His name was Thomas Whitmore.""
And before anyone could ask another question, the lights in the underground shelter went out.
A heavy metal door slammed shut behind them.
Then a voice came through the darkness.
"Welcome home, Daniel.""
It was Richard.
But a second voice followed.
May you like
One that sounded exactly like his dead father.
"Hello, son.""
