Chapter 6: The Uncle Who Controlled the Truth

Richard Whitmore stood in the doorway as though he still owned the mansion.

He was seventy-one years old, with silver hair, a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, and a gold walking stick in his right hand.

His face carried the same sharp features as Daniel's father.

But unlike Robert, Richard had never possessed a warm smile.

He looked at Daniel.

Then Amelia.

Then Marcus.

"Well," he said calmly, "it seems the entire family has decided to gather.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You told everyone you were dead.""

Richard smiled faintly.

"People believe what they're told.""

"You threatened my wife and child.""

"That's a serious accusation.""

"I have the recording.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

His eyes moved toward the cassette recorder.

For the first time, Daniel saw something resembling fear.

"Where did you get that?""

"From my sister.""

Richard looked at Amelia.

"Margaret's daughter.""

Amelia stood straight.

"Don't call her your sister. You helped destroy her life.""

Richard tapped his walking stick against the floor.

"Careful, young woman. You're repeating accusations you don't understand.""

"I understand enough.""

"No. You understand what Marcus has told you.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Leave her alone, Richard.""

Richard turned.

"Still playing the hero, Marcus? After all these years?""

Marcus clenched his fists.

"Your fight was with Margaret. You had no right to involve the children.""

Richard laughed.

"My fight was with the family. And you were foolish enough to think you belonged in it.""

Daniel moved between them.

"Enough.""

He pointed toward the documents.

"I want to know what happened to my mother.""

Richard looked at him for several seconds.

Then he sighed.

"Your mother was an emotional woman. She made terrible decisions.""

"Did you kill her?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Watch your mouth.""

"Did you kill her?""

"Your mother left because she couldn't accept the consequences of her own actions.""

Daniel took another step.

"Then why did she record that message?""

Richard glanced at the cassette recorder.

"Because Margaret enjoyed drama.""

Amelia suddenly spoke.

"She was afraid of you.""

Richard turned toward her.

"Your mother was afraid of losing her comfortable life. That is not the same thing.""

Amelia's voice trembled with anger.

"You took me away from her.""

"She gave you away.""

"That's a lie!""

Richard struck his walking stick against the floor.

"Your mother signed the documents herself!""

He pulled a folded paper from his jacket and threw it onto the table.

Daniel picked it up.

It was a legal guardianship agreement bearing Margaret's signature.

Amelia stared at it.

"I've never seen that.""

Richard smiled.

"Of course you haven't.""

Daniel examined the document.

Something was wrong.

The signature looked too neat.

His mother had always written her name with a distinctive upward stroke at the end.

This signature didn't have it.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the family archive.""

"Who witnessed it?""

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

"Can you verify this?""

Marcus examined the paper.

His expression changed.

"This isn't Margaret's handwriting.""

Richard laughed.

"Of course you'd say that.""

Marcus pointed to the date.

"Look carefully. Margaret was hospitalized on this date. She couldn't have signed this document.""

Richard's smile faded.

Daniel looked at the document again.

The date was October 15.

The day after his mother disappeared.

"How do you know she was hospitalized?"" Daniel asked.

Marcus looked at Richard.

"Because I drove her there.""

Richard tightened his grip on the walking stick.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Where?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Saint Catherine's private medical facility.""

Richard immediately interrupted.

"That hospital closed years ago.""

"Yes," Marcus replied.

"But the records were transferred to another facility.""

Daniel looked at his uncle.

"Then we'll get them.""

Richard shook his head.

"You're wasting your time.""

"Why?""

"Because those records no longer exist.""

Amelia took a small step forward.

"Actually, they do.""

She opened her handbag and removed a printed email.

"Three weeks ago, I contacted the hospital's records department. They confirmed that the original admission register was transferred to a storage facility.""

Richard stared at her.

"How did you find that?""

"Your mother taught me to keep asking questions.""

Daniel felt a surge of admiration for the woman standing beside him.

She had spent decades searching for answers without the money, influence, or protection he had taken for granted.

He looked at Richard.

"You're going to explain everything.""

Richard slowly sat down.

"Very well.""

For a moment, he appeared almost tired.

"Your mother discovered that Robert had been using the family trust to cover business losses. She threatened to expose him. I tried to negotiate with her.""

"By threatening her?""

"By reminding her what was at stake.""

"What was at stake?""

"The company. The family's reputation. Your future.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"My future? You erased my sister and destroyed my mother's life to protect a business?""

Richard looked at him coldly.

"One day, you'll understand that a family empire cannot survive on sentiment.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't want to hear another word about the empire.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Then perhaps you should hear about your father.""

Daniel went still.

"What about him?""

"Robert knew Margaret was planning to expose the financial records. He also knew Marcus was helping her.""

Marcus interrupted.

"That's not true.""

Richard looked at him.

"Really? Then explain why you were driving Margaret away from the estate that night.""

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

"Is that true?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"I was helping her escape.""

Richard smiled.

"And what happened afterward?""

Marcus looked down.

"I took her to the hospital.""

"Then?""

"I was told she had been transferred.""

"By whom?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Richard leaned back.

"By Robert.""

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"You're saying my father helped hide my mother?""

"Your father wanted her out of the picture. He wanted to protect you and the company.""

"Did he know she was alive?""

Richard looked at him.

For the first time, he didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Yes.""

Daniel stepped backward.

The revelation hurt more than he expected.

His father had known.

For years.

And he had allowed Daniel to believe his mother was dead.

"Why?""

Richard's expression became almost amused.

"Because Margaret made a deal.""

"What deal?""

"She agreed to disappear if Robert protected both children.""

Amelia stood.

"That's not true.""

Richard looked at her.

"Isn't it?""

"No. She would never have agreed to leave Daniel.""

Richard opened his briefcase.

Inside was a second folder.

He removed a document and placed it on the table.

It was a signed agreement between Robert Whitmore and an unidentified woman.

The document promised financial support in exchange for permanent separation from the Whitmore family.

Daniel scanned the signature.

Margaret Whitmore.

But something else caught his attention.

The woman had signed using a different surname.

Margaret Collins.

Daniel frowned.

"Why did she use that name?""

Richard shrugged.

"Perhaps she wanted a fresh start.""

Amelia picked up the document.

Then she noticed the date.

"Daniel.""

He looked at her.

"This was signed six months after she disappeared.""

Richard nodded.

"Exactly.""

Amelia's hands began trembling.

"Then she was alive.""

Richard said nothing.

Daniel turned toward him.

"Where is she?""

Richard closed his briefcase.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I have no reason to lie.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You've spent decades hiding things from this family. You expect me to believe you suddenly have nothing to hide?""

Richard's expression became cold.

"Be careful, Daniel. Your father left you a company worth hundreds of millions. Don't throw it away because of a woman who abandoned you.""

Daniel stared at him.

"My mother didn't abandon me.""

Richard shrugged.

"Believe whatever helps you sleep.""

Amelia suddenly placed the silver pendant on the table.

"Then explain this.""

Richard looked down.

His expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get that?""

"From my mother.""

Richard reached for it.

Daniel quickly moved the pendant away.

"Don't touch it.""

Amelia turned the pendant over.

There was a tiny seam along the edge.

She pressed it.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a miniature photograph.

It showed Margaret holding two babies.

Daniel recognized himself immediately.

The second baby was Amelia.

But beneath the photograph was something else.

A tiny folded piece of paper.

Amelia carefully unfolded it.

There was a handwritten address.

And a sentence.

If my children ever find this, tell them I never stopped waiting.

Daniel read the address.

His eyes widened.

It wasn't an address in Chicago.

It was a small coastal town in Maine.

He looked at Amelia.

"Have you ever been there?""

She shook her head.

Richard suddenly stood.

"Give me that paper.""

Daniel stepped backward.

"No.""

Richard raised his walking stick.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Actually, I think I finally do.""

Richard reached into his briefcase and removed a phone.

He pressed a number.

"Cancel the arrangement," he said quietly.

"They found the address.""

Daniel heard the words.

"Who are you calling?""

Richard ended the call.

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

"Someone who has been keeping your mother hidden for twenty-seven years.""

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"She's alive?""

Richard's face revealed nothing.

But his next words were devastating.

"She was alive yesterday.""

Amelia gasped.

Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.

Daniel stared at his uncle.

"What do you mean, yesterday?""

Richard slowly adjusted his jacket.

"I mean that if you want to see your mother again, you should leave this mansion immediately.""

"Where is she?""

Richard walked toward the door.

Then he stopped.

Without turning around, he delivered the final blow.

"Because the people who took her twenty-seven years ago have just discovered that you know where to look.""

The door closed behind him.

Daniel immediately called his security director.

"Find my mother. I want every available person searching that address.""

But before he could finish giving instructions, Amelia's phone rang.

She answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's weak voice came through the speaker.

"Amelia?""

Amelia froze.

"Who is this?""

The woman began crying.

"My darling... it's Mom.""

Amelia dropped into the nearest chair.

Daniel grabbed the phone.

"Mom?""

There was a long silence.

Then the woman whispered:

"Daniel?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Mom, where are you?""

Her voice trembled.

"Listen to me carefully. You must not trust Richard.""

"We know. We're coming to find you.""

"No, sweetheart. You don't understand.""

A sudden noise interrupted her.

Someone was approaching.

Margaret began speaking faster.

"Daniel, there's something else. About the baby. About Ethan.""

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

"What about my son?""

His mother whispered four words.

And Daniel felt the entire room begin to spin.

*"He isn't the only target.""*

The call disconnected.

Amelia screamed her mother's name.

Marcus immediately rushed toward the door.

Daniel stood motionless, holding the phone.

Then a message appeared on his screen.

It contained a photograph of Laura's hospital room.

Taken only minutes earlier.

Ethan's empty bassinet was visible beside the bed.

And beneath the photograph were six words:

*WE HAVE YOUR SON. DON'T CALL POLICE.*

Daniel's face went completely white.

"NO!""

He ran toward the entrance.

But Marcus caught his arm.

"Daniel! Wait!""

Daniel turned, his eyes burning with rage.

"LET GO OF ME!""

Marcus pointed toward the photograph.

"Look at the timestamp!""

Daniel looked.

The image had been taken three hours earlier.

Before the hospital had moved Laura and Ethan to the private security floor.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he noticed something in the background.

A hospital employee standing beside the bassinet.

The employee was wearing a surgical mask.

But the wrist was visible.

A distinctive silver watch.

Marcus recognized it.

He had seen that watch on Richard Whitmore's personal security chief.

Marcus slowly lowered his head.

"Sir...""

Daniel turned.

"What?""

Marcus's voice broke.

May you like

"I know who took your son.""

*And the person responsible was someone Daniel had trusted with his family's safety for nearly ten years.*
