Chapter 3: The Woman Who Was Erased From the Family
Daniel couldn't move.
He looked at the photograph again.
The young woman standing outside his family's mansion had the same dark complexion and curly hair as the newborn sleeping in Laura's arms.
Her eyes were different from his.
But her smile...
He had seen that smile before.
In his mother's old photographs.
In pictures of himself as a child.
And now, in the face of his son.
"Amelia Reed," Daniel whispered.
Marcus nodded.
"That's her.""
"She's my sister?""
"Yes.""
Daniel turned toward Laura.
"You said you met her before we got married.""
Laura nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she asked me not to.""
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
"Everyone in my life seems to know something about me except me!""
He walked toward the window.
Outside, Chicago was waking up beneath a gray November sky.
Cars moved through the hospital parking lot. People hurried along the sidewalk, carrying coffee and talking on their phones.
The world looked exactly the same.
But Daniel's life had changed completely.
He turned around.
"Marcus, I want to hear everything. Start from the beginning.""
Marcus placed his cap on the chair.
"Your mother became pregnant with me when she was twenty-four. We weren't married, but we planned to build a life together.""
He paused.
"Then her father discovered the relationship.""
Daniel listened silently.
"Your grandfather was a powerful man. He controlled the family money, the businesses, and nearly every decision Margaret made. He wanted her to marry Robert Whitmore because Robert came from another wealthy family.""
"And you?""
"I was a young man without money or influence.""
Marcus gave a sad smile.
"Your grandfather told me I would never be good enough for his daughter. He offered me money to disappear.""
"Did you take it?""
"No.""
Daniel watched him carefully.
"Then what happened?""
"Your mother became pregnant. When the family discovered it, everything changed.""
Marcus explained that Margaret had secretly given birth to Daniel in a private clinic outside the city.
Robert knew the truth.
But instead of exposing the scandal, he agreed to raise the child as his own.
There was one condition.
Marcus would remain silent and stay away from Margaret.
For several years, he obeyed.
But when Margaret gave birth to a second child, the arrangement became impossible.
"Amelia was born two years after you," Marcus continued.
"Your mother refused to give her away. She wanted to raise both children.""
Daniel frowned.
"Then why wasn't Amelia raised with me?""
"Because your grandfather intervened again.""
Marcus explained that Robert's family had already begun building a public image around the Whitmore heir.
A second child with a different father would create questions.
Questions about Margaret's marriage.
Questions about the inheritance.
Questions about Daniel's birth.
And Robert was terrified of losing the business empire he had spent his life protecting.
"So they took her?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus nodded.
"Your grandfather arranged for Amelia to be raised by distant relatives. Your mother was allowed to visit her secretly, but she was forbidden from bringing her home.""
Daniel looked sick.
"And my father accepted that?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Robert fought your grandfather at first. But when the old man threatened to remove him from the company, Robert gave in.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"How could my mother live with that?""
"She didn't live well, sir.""
Marcus's voice cracked.
"She wrote letters to Amelia every birthday. She sent money whenever she could. She kept every photograph.""
Daniel sat down again.
"Where are those letters?""
Marcus looked toward the door.
"At the estate.""
"Then we're going there.""
"Not yet.""
Daniel frowned.
"Excuse me?""
Marcus hesitated.
"There's something else.""
Daniel almost laughed.
"Of course there is.""
Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a small key.
"This belonged to your mother.""
Daniel examined it.
It was an old brass key attached to a silver tag engraved with the number 214.
"What's it for?""
"Your father's private archive.""
Daniel looked up.
"I thought you said the study had been emptied.""
"Not the study. A storage room beneath it.""
"What's inside?""
Marcus swallowed.
"Everything your father wanted hidden.""
Laura suddenly spoke.
"Daniel, I think you should know something about Amelia.""
He turned toward her.
"What?""
"When she came to the house, she wasn't looking for money.""
"Then what did she want?""
Laura glanced at the baby.
"She wanted to meet you.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she was afraid.""
"Of me?""
"No. Of what your father had done.""
Laura explained that Amelia had arrived at the mansion on a rainy evening six months before their wedding.
She had been carrying a small leather bag and an old photograph of Margaret.
Laura had answered the door.
At first, she thought the young woman was selling something.
But Amelia had asked one question.
"Is Daniel home?""
Laura had been suspicious.
"Who are you?""
Amelia had shown her the photograph.
"I'm his sister.""
Laura had been stunned.
Amelia told her everything she knew.
She explained that she had spent most of her childhood moving between relatives, never understanding why her mother visited her secretly.
When she was eighteen, one of those relatives finally told her that Margaret Whitmore was her biological mother.
Amelia had tried to contact Daniel several times.
Every letter had been returned.
Every phone call had gone unanswered.
Eventually, she discovered that someone had instructed the family's staff never to let her near the mansion.
"She told me your father had offered her money to stay away," Laura said.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"How much?""
"Two hundred thousand dollars.""
"Did she take it?""
Laura shook her head.
"She tore up the check in front of him.""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"Did you know?""
Marcus nodded.
"I was there.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid.""
Daniel stood.
"Afraid of what?""
Marcus looked directly at him.
"That you would lose everything.""
Daniel shook his head.
"My sister was kept away from me for nearly forty years, and you thought telling me would be worse than that?""
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"I know I made mistakes, sir.""
"Stop calling me sir!""
Daniel's voice broke.
"I'm your son, apparently. Isn't that what you've been trying to tell me?""
Marcus looked at him.
For the first time in twenty years, he didn't know what to say.
Then Ethan began crying.
Laura immediately rocked the baby.
"Shh, sweetheart. It's okay.""
Daniel watched her.
He noticed how carefully she held the child, how her fingers protected his tiny head.
Whatever secrets surrounded the baby, one thing was clear.
Laura loved him.
Daniel approached the bed.
"Laura, I need you to tell me something honestly.""
She looked up.
"What?""
"When you first saw Ethan, were you surprised by his appearance?""
Laura hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did you know he might look different?""
"I knew there was a possibility.""
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Laura took a deep breath.
"Your father contacted me before he died.""
Daniel froze.
"My father?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Two months before our wedding.""
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
The chauffeur seemed equally surprised.
Laura continued.
"Your father invited me to the estate. He told me that our family carried a complicated genetic history. He said there were records showing that some of the Whitmore descendants had African ancestry.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"He said he wanted you to discover it when you were ready.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That doesn't make any sense.""
Laura wiped her eyes.
"He also warned me that if we ever had children, I shouldn't assume their appearance would resemble yours.""
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"So you knew there was a possibility?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you tell me when I started asking questions about the baby?""
"Because I was afraid you would react exactly like this.""
Daniel stepped away.
"That's not an answer.""
Laura reached for his hand.
"Daniel, I never cheated on you.""
He looked at her.
"Then why did you hide all of this?""
"Because I promised your father.""
Daniel pulled his hand away.
"You promised a dead man to lie to your husband?""
Laura began sobbing.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Mrs. Whitmore, protecting someone and hiding the truth are not always the same thing.""
Laura looked at him.
"I know.""
For a moment, the only sound in the room was Ethan's soft breathing.
Then Daniel picked up the medical report from his father's envelope.
He had barely glanced at it earlier.
Now he unfolded it completely.
At the top was the name of a genetic research clinic.
Below it were several pages of laboratory findings.
He recognized the date.
It was from six months before his wedding.
His eyes moved down the document.
Then he stopped.
"Marcus?""
"Yes?""
"Why does this report mention Amelia?""
Marcus stepped closer.
Daniel pointed to a line near the bottom.
It read:
Subject: Amelia Reed. Biological relationship to Daniel Whitmore confirmed through comparative genetic testing.
Daniel's face went pale.
He continued reading.
A second line caught his attention.
The results establish a shared biological father.
Daniel looked up.
"Shared father?""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"That means...""
Marcus finished the sentence.
"Amelia and you are full biological siblings.""
Daniel looked toward the photograph.
Then toward the baby.
Something was beginning to make sense.
But the final page of the report contained another entry.
A handwritten note in Robert Whitmore's familiar script.
The second child must never discover what happened to her mother.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What happened to my mother?""
Marcus didn't answer.
"Marcus!""
The older man looked toward the door.
His expression had changed.
He appeared frightened.
"Sir, I think we should leave this hospital.""
"Why?""
"Because someone has been watching the family.""
Daniel stared at him.
"What are you talking about?""
Marcus walked to the window and carefully moved the curtain aside.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
A man in a dark coat stood beside it, holding a phone.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
His face lost all color.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel approached the window.
"Who is he?""
Marcus stepped back.
"Your grandfather's former security chief.""
"He's been dead for fifteen years.""
"That's what we were told.""
The man outside looked up toward the hospital windows.
Then he lifted his phone.
Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Who is this?""
A man's voice came through.
"Mr. Whitmore, you need to stop asking questions about your mother.""
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
"Who are you?""
"Someone who knows what happened on October 14.""
Daniel glanced at Marcus.
The chauffeur was trembling.
The voice continued.
"And if you want your wife and newborn son to remain safe, you'll tell Marcus to hand over the key.""
Daniel looked down at the brass key in his palm.
"Why do you want this key?""
There was a brief silence.
Then the caller whispered something that made Daniel's blood run cold.
"Because the woman you believe died peacefully in her sleep was murdered.""
The call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Laura gasped.
May you like
Marcus closed his eyes.
And somewhere beneath the hospital's bright white lights, the truth about the Whitmore family became far darker than any of them had imagined.
