Chapter 5: The Woman Waiting at the Mansion
Daniel had never hated his family's mansion.
Not even during the years when he felt trapped inside its enormous rooms.
It was the place where he had learned to walk, celebrated birthdays, and spent Christmas mornings with his mother.
But as his black SUV approached the iron gates that afternoon, the building looked different.
The white columns seemed cold.
The windows looked like dark, watching eyes.
And somewhere behind those walls was a truth that had been hidden from him for nearly three decades.
Daniel had arranged for Laura and Ethan to remain at the hospital under private security.
His wife's doctor had insisted that she needed rest.
Daniel hated leaving her, but Laura had taken his hand before he left.
"Find Amelia," she had whispered.
"Why?""
"Because she deserves to know that her brother is finally looking for her.""
Daniel had kissed her forehead.
"I'll bring her home.""
Marcus sat beside him in the front passenger seat.
Neither man spoke for most of the journey.
When they arrived, the security gate opened before Daniel could press the intercom.
He frowned.
"Who opened it?""
Marcus looked at the security booth.
"Someone inside.""
Daniel parked near the entrance.
The front door was already unlocked.
He walked inside.
"Hello?""
No answer.
He entered the living room.
Everything appeared untouched.
The expensive paintings were still hanging on the walls. The crystal chandelier sparkled beneath the afternoon sunlight. His father's antique clock continued ticking beside the fireplace.
But something was missing.
Daniel looked toward the family portrait above the fireplace.
His mother's photograph had been removed.
He stared at the empty space.
"Who took that?""
Marcus followed his gaze.
"It was there yesterday.""
Daniel turned sharply.
"You were here yesterday?""
Marcus nodded.
"I came to collect some documents.""
"And you didn't think to tell me?""
"At the time, I didn't know what was happening.""
Daniel walked toward the staircase.
"Find whoever is working here. I want everyone accounted for.""
Marcus made a phone call.
A few moments later, an elderly housekeeper emerged from the kitchen.
Her name was Helen Parker.
She had worked for the Whitmore family for thirty-two years.
When she saw Daniel, her eyes widened.
"Mr. Whitmore?""
"Helen. Where is my mother's photograph?""
The older woman looked toward the empty wall.
Then she lowered her eyes.
"I was told to remove it.""
"By whom?""
She hesitated.
"Mr. Robert.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"My father has been dead for eight years.""
Helen's lips trembled.
"I know.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who told you to remove it?""
She glanced toward Marcus.
Then back at Daniel.
"Your grandfather's lawyer.""
Daniel frowned.
"My grandfather died twenty-seven years ago.""
Helen began crying.
"Not that grandfather, sir.""
Daniel froze.
"What do you mean?""
Before she could answer, a voice came from the staircase.
"She means your father's older brother.""
Daniel turned.
A woman stood halfway down the stairs.
She was in her early forties, with dark brown skin, thick curly black hair, and a face that looked strangely familiar.
She wore a simple black coat and held a leather handbag.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
The photograph.
The pendant.
The name.
"Amelia?""
The woman nodded.
"Hello, Daniel.""
For a moment, neither moved.
Daniel had imagined meeting his sister many times during the drive.
He had imagined anger, tears, accusations, perhaps even a confrontation.
But standing in front of her, he could only stare.
She looked like the missing piece of a photograph that had been torn in half.
Amelia slowly descended the stairs.
"I suppose you have a lot of questions.""
Daniel swallowed.
"More than you can imagine.""
She gave a sad smile.
"I've been waiting nearly forty years for you to ask them.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Why didn't you contact me directly?""
"I did.""
"Marcus said your letters were returned.""
"Some were returned. Others never reached you.""
"Who stopped them?""
Amelia looked toward Helen.
Then toward the ceiling.
"Your father's family.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Who specifically?""
Amelia placed her handbag on a chair.
"Your uncle, Richard Whitmore.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Richard died before my father.""
"No, he didn't.""
"What?""
"Your uncle is alive.""
Daniel stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
Amelia took out a newspaper clipping.
It showed a man in a dark suit attending a business charity event.
The photograph was several months old.
Daniel recognized the face.
Richard Whitmore.
His father's older brother.
The man everyone had told him had died overseas after a heart attack.
Daniel looked at Amelia.
"Why would my father tell everyone Richard was dead?""
"Because Richard was removed from the family after a disagreement about the company.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"That wasn't the whole story.""
Amelia nodded.
"No. It wasn't.""
She explained that Richard had controlled several family investments before Robert took over the business.
When Margaret became pregnant with Daniel, Richard discovered the truth about Marcus.
He threatened to expose the affair unless Margaret agreed to surrender control of a family trust.
Margaret refused.
Richard then began pressuring Robert to keep Marcus away from the family.
Years later, when Amelia was born, Richard saw another opportunity.
He used the child's existence to threaten the family's reputation.
But Margaret had refused to sign the documents he wanted.
"She told him she would rather lose everything than allow him to control her children," Amelia said.
Daniel looked at her.
"What documents?""
Amelia opened her handbag and removed a thin folder.
Inside were several copies of legal agreements.
The first document concerned a trust established by Margaret Whitmore.
Daniel read the heading.
It was worth nearly $80 million.
He looked up.
"Where did this money come from?""
"Your grandfather established the trust before his death. It was meant for his grandchildren.""
Daniel scanned the document.
There were two beneficiaries.
Daniel Whitmore.
Amelia Reed.
But someone had crossed out Amelia's name.
In its place was a handwritten note:
Beneficiary removed by order of Robert Whitmore.
Daniel's hands tightened.
"My father stole her inheritance?""
Amelia shook her head.
"Not exactly. He allowed Richard to control it.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard threatened to reveal something about Robert's involvement in our mother's disappearance.""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
The chauffeur was visibly shaken.
"Did you know about the trust?""
Marcus nodded.
"I knew your mother had created it.""
"And you let them take it?""
Marcus lowered his head.
"I was trying to protect Amelia.""
Amelia stepped toward him.
"You protected me by keeping me poor and making me believe my mother abandoned me?""
Marcus looked devastated.
"I did what I thought would keep you alive.""
"Alive?""
Her voice rose.
"Do you know what it was like growing up knowing my mother was alive somewhere but never being allowed to see her? Do you know how many birthdays I spent waiting for her?""
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
Amelia turned away.
Daniel watched them silently.
He was beginning to understand that the family secret hadn't destroyed only his childhood.
It had destroyed hers too.
Then Amelia looked at Daniel.
"I didn't come here for the money.""
"Then what do you want?""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small cassette recorder.
"I want you to hear your mother's voice.""
Daniel's breath caught.
"What?""
"She recorded something before she disappeared.""
Amelia placed the recorder on the coffee table.
She pressed PLAY.
A woman's voice filled the living room.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
His mother.
"Amelia, sweetheart, if you're hearing this, it means I wasn't able to come back for you.""
Daniel covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
"I want you to know that I never abandoned you. I never stopped loving you. And I never wanted you and Daniel to grow up apart.""
There was a pause.
Then Margaret began crying.
"Your uncle Richard has discovered the truth about the Whitmore inheritance. He knows what Robert has been hiding. He's threatened to take everything from us.""
Daniel leaned closer.
His mother's voice became quieter.
"If anything happens to me, do not trust the man who says he is protecting the family.""
The recording crackled.
Then Margaret spoke again.
"Daniel, if you're hearing this, I want you to remember one thing. You have a sister. Her name is Amelia.
Find her. Give her the love I couldn't give her while I was alive.""
Daniel's tears finally fell.
But the recording wasn't finished.
A loud noise could be heard in the background.
Then a man's voice.
Richard.
"Margaret, give me the documents!""
His mother answered.
"No!""
A crash followed.
Then a frightened whisper.
"Marcus, take the children away!""
The recording stopped.
Daniel stared at the machine.
"Where did you get this?""
Amelia looked toward the hallway.
"From the greenhouse.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Did you find the documents too?""
She nodded.
"They were hidden beneath the floorboards.""
Daniel looked at the folder again.
"Then we need to call the police.""
Amelia shook her head.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because the documents prove Richard wanted the inheritance, but they don't prove what happened to our mother.""
She took out one final photograph.
It showed Richard standing outside the greenhouse on October 14.
His shirt was stained.
His right hand was wrapped in a white bandage.
And behind him, barely visible through the glass, was Margaret.
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
"Is she alive in this picture?""
Amelia nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then what happened to her?""
Amelia looked at Marcus.
He closed his eyes.
Then she delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Your mother didn't die in that greenhouse, Daniel.""
She pointed toward the photograph.
"She escaped.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Escaped where?""
Amelia reached into the folder and removed a letter.
It was dated three days after the night of her disappearance.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Margaret Whitmore.
Daniel read the final sentence.
I am going somewhere no one will think to look. And when the time comes, I will return for my children.
Daniel looked up.
"Where is she?""
Amelia's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
Then the front door slammed.
A man's voice echoed through the mansion.
May you like
"Daniel! Step away from that woman!""
Richard Whitmore had arrived.
