Chapter 2: The Chauffeur's Twenty-Year Secret
Daniel held the photograph so tightly that its edges bent beneath his fingers.
He recognized the people immediately.
His father, Robert Whitmore, looked exactly as he remembered him: tall, broad-shouldered, wearing an expensive suit and the confident smile of a man accustomed to getting whatever he wanted.
His mother, Margaret, stood beside him.
And Marcus was there too.
But something was strange.
Marcus was much younger, perhaps twenty-five, and his arm rested casually around Margaret's shoulders.
Daniel had never seen that photograph before.
He looked at Marcus.
"Where did you get this?""
"From your father's private study.""
"That study was emptied years ago.""
"Not everything, sir.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You're going to explain this right now.""
Marcus glanced at Laura.
She was sitting upright in the hospital bed, holding Ethan close.
"Mr. Whitmore, I think your wife should explain first.""
Daniel turned sharply.
"Laura?""
She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"I never wanted you to discover everything this way.""
"Discover what?""
She looked at the photograph.
"Your father and Marcus knew each other long before Marcus became our family's chauffeur.""
Daniel gave a frustrated laugh.
"Of course they knew each other. Marcus worked for him.""
"No, Daniel. They knew each other before that.""
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"Your father and I grew up in the same neighborhood.""
Daniel looked at him.
"You're telling me my father hired you because you were childhood friends?""
"Something like that.""
"Then why did nobody ever mention it?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Because our relationship was complicated.""
Daniel threw the photograph onto the bed.
"Stop speaking in riddles!""
A nurse entered after hearing the raised voices.
"Mr. Whitmore, I need you to calm down. Your wife has just given birth, and the baby needs a peaceful environment.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"I understand. I'm sorry.""
The nurse checked Laura's blood pressure and examined the newborn.
"Everything looks stable," she said.
"Congratulations on your little boy.""
Daniel looked away.
The nurse left.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Laura gently kissed Ethan's forehead.
"Daniel, do you remember the first ultrasound?""
He frowned.
"Of course.""
"You remember the doctor saying there was something unusual about the pregnancy?""
Daniel nodded.
"The doctor mentioned a possible genetic complication. You said everything would be fine.""
"Yes.""
Laura swallowed.
"Do you remember what happened when we went for the additional testing?""
Daniel looked at her.
"What does that have to do with anything?""
"Your blood results were unusual.""
Daniel's expression tightened.
"My results?""
"Yes.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Sir, your father knew about this possibility.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"How could my father know something about my medical results? He died eight years ago!""
Marcus nodded.
"Because this wasn't the first time someone in your family had discovered the truth.""
Daniel stared at the older man.
"What truth?""
Marcus finally sat down.
"When I started working for your father, I was twenty-eight. He had just taken over the family business. I was hired to drive him, but over time, I became much more than an employee.""
He paused.
"Your father trusted me with things he didn't trust anyone else to know.""
Daniel folded his arms.
"Get to the point.""
Marcus looked directly at him.
"Your father was not your biological father.""
The room became completely silent.
Daniel blinked.
For a moment, he thought he had misunderstood.
"What?""
Marcus repeated himself.
"Robert Whitmore was the man who raised you. He was your legal father. But he was not the man whose DNA you inherited.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Laura began crying harder.
"Daniel...""
He turned toward her.
"You knew?""
She didn't answer.
"Laura, did you know?""
She nodded slowly.
Daniel stepped backward.
"How long?""
"Before we got married.""
He looked as though someone had struck him.
"You knew this before you married me?""
"Yes.""
"And you never told me?""
Laura's tears fell onto the blanket.
"I was sworn to secrecy.""
"By whom? My father?""
She nodded.
Daniel laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"Unbelievable.""
Marcus continued.
"Your mother had a relationship with me before she married Robert.""
Daniel's eyes widened.
"What?""
"I was young. I loved her. She loved me too.
But your grandfather had other plans. He wanted Margaret to marry Robert because their families had business connections.""
Marcus looked down.
"Your mother became pregnant before the wedding.""
Daniel felt his knees weaken.
"With me?""
"Yes, sir.""
"Then why did she marry Robert?""
Marcus took a breath.
"Because your grandfather threatened to destroy both our families. He told Margaret that if she refused the marriage, he would make sure she never saw her child again.""
Daniel stared at the photograph.
His entire childhood suddenly seemed like a collection of carefully arranged lies.
"Why did Robert raise me?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Because he loved your mother. And because he knew the child was innocent.""
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"Did he know you were my father?""
"From the beginning.""
"Then why did he keep you around?""
Marcus looked directly at him.
"Because your father made me a promise.""
"What promise?""
"That one day, I would be able to watch you grow up. Even if I could never call you my son.""
Daniel sat heavily in the chair.
His hands were shaking.
For years, he had believed his father was a cold but honorable businessman.
He remembered Robert teaching him to ride a bicycle, attending his school graduation, and sitting beside him when he underwent surgery as a teenager.
Was all of that a lie?
"Did my mother know?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus nodded.
"She knew.""
"Does she know you're telling me this?""
"Your mother passed away before Robert.""
Daniel covered his face.
A thousand questions fought for space in his mind.
Then one thought rose above the others.
He looked at Ethan.
The baby was sleeping peacefully in Laura's arms.
His tiny fingers were curled around the blanket.
Daniel looked at Marcus again.
"Are you saying this child looks like you because you're my biological father?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No, sir.""
"Then who is?""
Marcus's face tightened.
"Your biological ancestry may explain some of the child's appearance. But I won't pretend to know that from looking at him. Only a proper medical assessment can establish that.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Then why did you say this child could expose the truth?""
Marcus reached into his jacket again.
This time, he removed a sealed envelope.
It was yellow with age.
Across the front were the words:
*FOR DANIEL WHITMORE — ONLY TO BE OPENED WHEN HE BECOMES A FATHER.*
Daniel recognized his father's handwriting immediately.
His throat went dry.
"Where did you get that?""
"Your father gave it to me three months before he died.""
"Why didn't you give it to me then?""
"Because he made me promise to wait until you had your first child.""
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small medical report.
The letter began:
My son, if you are reading this, it means you have finally become a father.
Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.
He continued.
There is something I should have told you when you were old enough to understand. I made a terrible mistake many years ago, and that mistake became the foundation of our family's greatest secret.
Daniel's eyes moved down the page.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
There is one more thing you must know. Marcus has protected you all these years, but he has not told you everything. Before you make any decision about your marriage, find out what happened at the Whitmore estate on October 14, twenty-seven years ago.
Daniel looked up.
"October fourteenth?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes, sir.""
"What happened that day?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then Laura spoke.
"Daniel, please don't make him say it.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Why? What happened?""
Laura looked at Marcus.
The older man slowly stood.
"Your father discovered that Margaret had secretly given birth to another child.""
Daniel frowned.
"Another child?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes, sir. A daughter.""
Daniel stared at him.
"My mother had a daughter?""
"Yes.""
"Where is she?""
Marcus's face became unreadable.
"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""
Daniel stood up.
"Tell me!""
Marcus looked toward the newborn.
"Your father didn't just hide your biological identity. He also hid the existence of your sister.""
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
"Why?""
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Because the man who raised you believed she was a threat to the Whitmore inheritance.""
Daniel looked at Laura.
She was crying again.
"How do you know all this?"" he asked her.
Laura's lips trembled.
"Because I met her.""
Daniel went completely still.
"When?""
Laura closed her eyes.
"Six months before we got married.""
Daniel stared at his wife.
"What?""
"She came to our house.""
"Who came to our house?""
Laura looked at him.
"Your sister.""
Before Daniel could speak, Marcus placed a final photograph on the table.
It showed a young woman standing outside the Whitmore mansion.
She had dark brown skin, thick curly hair, and familiar features.
Daniel looked at the picture.
Then he looked at his newborn son.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
And beneath the photograph, someone had written a name.
*AMELIA REED.*
Daniel slowly raised his head.
"Marcus...""
The chauffeur nodded.
"Yes, sir?""
"Why does my sister have your last name?""
May you like
Marcus looked at him with tears in his eyes.
"Because she is my daughter too.""
