Chapter 9: The Woman Who Never Left
Vittorio had spent his entire life believing that some doors should remain closed.
The past was the past.
The dead were gone.
Secrets buried with people had no power anymore.
But standing inside the abandoned vineyard house, holding his daughter while staring at a letter written by his dead mother, he realized something terrifying.
The past had never disappeared.
It had been waiting.
“Lucy,” Vittorio whispered.
The little girl held onto his jacket.
“Are you mad?””
His heart broke.
Not because of what she said.
Because of what she revealed.
Even after everything, even after being terrified, Lucy was still worried she had done something wrong.
He knelt down.
“No, sweetheart.””
“But I didn’t tell you before.””
“You were scared.””
She nodded.
“I thought Mommy would be angry.””
The word hit him.
Mommy.
Even after Bianca hurt her, Lucy still called her that.
Children did not stop loving easily.
They only learned to hide the pain.
“Tell me everything,” Vittorio said gently.
Lucy looked at the others in the room.
At Bianca.
At Marcus.
At Lorenzo.
Then back at him.
“She came to my room last night.””
Vittorio felt his body go cold.
“Who?””
Lucy swallowed.
“Grandma.””
Nobody moved.
“Lucy,” Vittorio said carefully, “you know Grandma is gone.””
The girl nodded.
“I know.””
“Then what did you see?””
Lucy looked down.
“She looked older.””
Vittorio’s breathing stopped.
“She had Grandma’s necklace.””
Everyone turned toward Lorenzo.
The attorney’s face had lost all color.
“What necklace?”” Vittorio asked.
Lorenzo didn’t answer.
“Lorenzo.””
The old man looked away.
That was enough.
Vittorio stood.
“What did you hide from me?””
Lorenzo sighed.
“Your mother had a sister.””
The room became silent.
“A sister?””
“Yes.””
“I never knew.””
“She wanted it that way.””
Vittorio stared.
“Why?””
“Because her sister was dangerous.””
The words felt impossible.
Another hidden family member.
Another secret.
Another person connected to the destruction around him.
“What was her name?””
Lorenzo hesitated.
“Isabella.””
The name meant nothing.
But Lucy’s face changed.
“She said that name.””
Vittorio turned immediately.
“What?””
Lucy looked frightened.
“She said, ‘Isabella came back because the Romano family forgot what belonged to her.’”
Everyone froze.
Bianca whispered:
“She’s alive.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
Bianca shook her head.
“I knew the name.””
“From where?””
“My father’s records.””
Lorenzo nodded slowly.
“Isabella Valenti.””
Vittorio frowned.
“Valenti?””
The attorney looked at him.
“Yes.””
The room shifted.
The connection became clear.
Dante.
Bianca.
Isabella.
His mother.
All these years, the same names had been circling his family.
“How is she connected to Lucy?””
Lorenzo looked at the letter.
“Your mother discovered the truth before she died.””
“What truth?””
“That Isabella and Dante believed Alessandro stole something from their family.””
“What?””
“The original Romano inheritance documents.””
Vittorio stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Lorenzo shook his head.
“Your grandfather created a second foundation before he died.””
“What kind of foundation?””
“One that protected families connected to the Romano name.””
Vittorio frowned.
“My family?””
“No.””
Lorenzo looked at Lucy.
“Children.””
A chill moved through the room.
“Children?””
“Yes.””
Vittorio held Lucy tighter.
“What does that mean?””
“Your grandfather believed powerful families often destroyed their own future by fighting over money.””
Lorenzo looked at the folder.
“He created a trust designed to protect descendants.””
“And Lucy?””
“She was the first child born after the trust was created.””
Vittorio looked confused.
“Why does that matter?””
“Because the trust had a condition.””
Everyone waited.
“The child who inherited it had to be someone untouched by ambition.””
Silence.
Vittorio understood.
Lucy was innocent.
A child.
Someone who had no interest in power.
No interest in wealth.
She was chosen because she didn’t want anything.
“She wanted Lucy gone,” Vittorio whispered.
Lorenzo nodded.
“Isabella believed that if Lucy disappeared, the trust would open.””
“To who?””
The attorney looked at Bianca.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Bianca’s face changed.
“No.””
Vittorio stared.
“Bianca?””
“I didn’t know.””
“Didn’t know what?””
“That she was trying to use me.””
The answer was quiet.
Painfully honest.
Vittorio studied her.
For the first time, he saw something different.
Not the confident woman from the breakfast room.
Not the woman who believed she could control everything.
A woman who had also been trapped.
“You were a pawn.””
Bianca looked away.
“Yes.””
“But you still hurt my daughter.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
No excuse.
No defense.
Just a confession.
Then a sound came from downstairs.
A door closing.
Everyone froze.
Marcus moved toward the hallway.
“I’ll check.””
“No,” Vittorio said.
But Marcus was already gone.
A second later, they heard a struggle.
Then silence.
Vittorio ran.
The others followed.
When they reached the first floor, Marcus was standing near the entrance.
And behind him was a woman.
An older woman.
Silver hair.
Elegant clothing.
A familiar necklace around her neck.
Vittorio stopped.
Because Lucy was right.
She looked exactly like his grandmother.
Not his mother.
His grandmother.
The woman smiled faintly.
“Hello, Vittorio.””
His entire body became still.
“Isabella.””
She smiled.
“So you finally learned my name.””
“You took my daughter.””
“She came willingly.””
Vittorio’s anger rose.
“She is seven years old.””
“She is a Romano.””
“That is not an answer.””
Isabella looked at Lucy.
Then smiled sadly.
“She has her mother’s eyes.””
Vittorio stepped forward.
“Stay away from her.””
The woman looked at him.
“You still think I’m the villain.””
“You kidnapped a child.””
“I saved her.””
Nobody spoke.
Vittorio almost laughed.
“Saved her?””
“Yes.””
“From what?””
Isabella looked around the old house.
“From the people who want to turn her into a weapon.””
His expression hardened.
“You mean me?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I mean the person who has been lying to you since the day Lucy was born.””
Everyone looked confused.
Isabella continued.
“The person who knew Lucy carried the key to the Romano trust.””
Vittorio glanced at Bianca.
But Isabella shook her head.
“Not her.””
Then she looked at Lorenzo.
The old attorney went pale.
Vittorio noticed.
“Lorenzo?””
Isabella smiled.
“There is the truth.””
The attorney stepped back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Isabella looked at Vittorio.
“Ask him where your mother really died.””
The room went silent.
Vittorio turned.
“Lorenzo.””
The attorney couldn’t answer.
“Where?””
His voice became sharper.
“Where did my mother die?””
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“I…”
Vittorio stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
The old man finally whispered:
“She didn’t die in the hospital.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
“She died in the Romano estate.””
Nobody moved.
Vittorio stared.
“You told me she had an accident.””
“I was protecting you.””
“Again?””
His voice broke.
“Everyone was protecting me.””
He looked around.
“And nobody was telling me the truth.””
Isabella watched him.
Then said:
“Your mother discovered Lorenzo was working with the people trying to control Lucy.””
Lorenzo shook his head.
“No.””
But nobody believed him.
Vittorio looked at the man who had protected his family for decades.
The man who had guided him.
The man who had always been there.
“Is it true?””
Lorenzo’s silence answered.
Then Lucy whispered:
“Daddy.””
He looked down.
She pointed toward the old necklace around Isabella’s neck.
“Grandma wore that when she came to my room.””
Vittorio froze.
Because that was impossible.
His mother had owned that necklace.
He had buried her wearing it.
But Isabella was wearing it now.
And then the final piece fell into place.
The necklace was not his mother’s.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone who had been hidden.
Someone who had been erased.
Vittorio looked at Isabella.
“Who are you really?””
The woman smiled.
And her answer destroyed the last belief he had about his family.
“I am the woman your mother died trying to protect.””
A pause.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“And I am Lucy’s real grandmother.””
