Chapter 4: The Evidence Hidden Beneath the Family Name

The words stayed in Vittorio’s mind long after Lucy stopped speaking.

*She was the only thing stopping her from owning the Romano family.*

A child should never understand a sentence like that.

A child should worry about school projects, birthday parties, and whether she had enough time to finish her favorite cartoon before bedtime.

Not inheritance.

Not control.

Not enemies hiding behind smiles.

Vittorio held Lucy against his chest while looking across the room at Bianca.

For years, he had seen her as the person who would protect his daughter when he couldn’t be there.

Now he saw something else.

Someone who had studied his family.

Someone who had calculated weaknesses.

Someone who had looked at a little girl and seen an obstacle.

“Lucy,” Vittorio whispered, “I need you to go upstairs with Emma.””

The little girl shook her head.

“No.””

He looked at her gently.

“Sweetheart.””

“I don’t want to leave you.””

His heart tightened.

Because he understood why.

Leaving meant being alone.

And Lucy had learned that alone was dangerous.

“You’re not leaving me,” he said.

“You’re giving me a chance to fix this.””

She looked at him.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

Emma stepped forward carefully.

“Come on, sweetheart.””

Lucy finally nodded.

Before leaving, she looked back at Vittorio.

Not at Bianca.

Not at Marcus.

Only him.

And that was the moment Vittorio made a decision.

Whatever had happened.

Whatever secrets were buried.

Whatever damage had been done.

He would uncover every single piece.

After Lucy disappeared upstairs, the room became colder.

Vittorio turned back.

“Start talking.””

Nobody answered.

His eyes moved between Bianca and Marcus.

“Now.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

Bianca looked angry.

“You’re acting like I’m a criminal.””

Vittorio stared at her.

“You used my daughter as part of a plan to take my family from me.””

“I didn’t hurt her.””

The sentence came out too quickly.

Too easily.

Vittorio’s face changed.

“You didn’t hurt her?””

Bianca looked away.

“She was never in danger.””

“Fear is danger.””

His voice was low.

“She begged me not to leave her alone with you.””

For a brief second, Bianca’s expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

“She’s a child. Children misunderstand things.””

“No.””

Vittorio stepped closer.

“Children understand pain very well.””

Marcus lowered his head.

He couldn’t look at him.

That told Vittorio more than any confession.

“Why did you help her?””

Marcus looked up.

“I didn’t know how far she would go.””

“That isn’t an answer.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I thought it would be temporary.””

“What would be temporary?””

“The pressure.””

Vittorio stared.

“Explain.””

Marcus walked toward the window.

The same window where he had laughed in the first video.

Now he looked like a completely different person.

“She came to me two years ago.””

Bianca’s expression changed.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He turned toward her.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Vittorio listened.

“She told me she had proof your father ruined her family.””

“What proof?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you helped destroy my daughter’s life.””

Marcus flinched.

Because he knew it was true.

“She showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Old business records.””

Vittorio’s expression sharpened.

“From my father?””

Marcus nodded.

“She believed Alessandro Romano took advantage of her father’s company during a financial crisis.””

“And?””

“And she believed the Romano family owed her.””

Vittorio laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So instead of confronting me, she married me.””

Bianca looked at him.

“You don’t know what my family lost.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“But I know what my daughter lost.””

The silence that followed was brutal.

Marcus looked down.

“I should have stopped it.””

“Yes.””

Vittorio’s answer was immediate.

“You should have.””

Marcus accepted that.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just guilt.

Then Vittorio noticed something.

“You said she showed you documents.””

Marcus nodded.

“Where are they?””

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

Vittorio watched him carefully.

Then Marcus added:

“But Bianca kept copies.””

Everyone looked at her.

Bianca’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

“Search my room if you want.””

Vittorio narrowed his eyes.

“You’re not afraid.””

“No.””

“Why?””

She smiled faintly.

“Because you still don’t know the whole story.””

That sentence bothered him.

Not because it sounded threatening.

Because it sounded confident.

Like she still had a card left.

Vittorio turned toward Emma.

“Take my security team and check Bianca’s office.””

Bianca laughed softly.

“You think you can just search my belongings?””

“Yes.””

“Without permission?””

Vittorio looked at her.

“This is my house.””

Her smile faded.

“Is it?””

The room went still.

A strange feeling moved through him.

“What does that mean?””

Bianca didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“Vittorio…”

He turned.

“What?””

Marcus looked nervous.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“The inheritance clause.””

Vittorio waited.

“You said it had conditions.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“And?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father didn’t only include a condition about your marriage.””

A chill ran through Vittorio.

“What else?””

Marcus looked at Bianca.

“She knew.””

Bianca’s eyes narrowed.

“Marcus.””

“She knew before you married her.””

Vittorio turned slowly.

“Knew what?””

Marcus swallowed.

“That your father left another person authority over the estate if something happened.””

“What person?””

Nobody answered.

Vittorio’s patience disappeared.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

Then back at him.

“Your father’s attorney.””

Vittorio frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“He wasn’t just the attorney.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“He was your father’s closest friend.””

A memory surfaced.

An old man with silver hair.

A man who attended every major Romano family event.

A man Vittorio hadn’t seen in years.

“Where is he now?””

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

“He disappeared six months ago.””

Vittorio stared.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I know this?””

Marcus looked at Bianca.

“Because she made sure you didn’t.””

Vittorio felt the room shift again.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

“How?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Bianca did.

“Because I had help.””

The confession was quiet.

But it changed everything.

Vittorio looked at her.

“From who?””

Bianca walked toward the table.

She picked up a glass of water.

Her hand was steady.

Too steady.

“You keep thinking this is about me.””

“It isn’t?””

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“I’m just the person standing in front of you.””

Vittorio felt his anger turn into something else.

Suspicion.

“What does that mean?””

Bianca placed the glass down.

“It means someone else started this long before I entered your life.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emma’s phone rang.

Again.

Everyone looked.

Emma checked the screen.

Her face immediately changed.

“What is it?”” Vittorio asked.

She looked at him.

“It’s from an unknown number.””

“Answer it.””

Emma hesitated.

Then pressed the button.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Vittorio.””

The color left his face.

Because he knew that voice.

A voice he hadn’t heard in six months.

A voice everyone believed was gone.

The man spoke again.

“You finally found out what Bianca was doing.””

Vittorio stepped closer to the phone.

“Where are you?””

The man ignored the question.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The room became silent.

“Your wife was never trying to steal your inheritance.””

Vittorio frowned.

“Then what was she trying to do?””

A pause.

Then the man said:

“She was trying to protect herself from the person who ordered her to destroy you.””

Vittorio’s blood ran cold.

“Who?””

The man took a breath.

And before he answered, the call suddenly cut off.

Everyone stared at the phone.

Then another message appeared.

This time, from the same unknown number.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*Ask Bianca who paid for Lucy’s silence.*
