Chapter 6: The Child Who Changed the Inheritance
The folder sat inside the hidden compartment like a forgotten grave.
No one touched it.
Not at first.
Because sometimes the truth was more frightening when it was still closed.
Vittorio stared at the words written across the cover.
*THE ROMANO CHILD.*
His fingers hovered above the folder.
Seven years ago.
The year Lucy was born.
The year everything in his life changed.
The year he became a father.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
Not Bianca.
Not Marcus.
Not Emma.
Only the voice from the hidden speaker remained.
“You spent your life believing your father’s greatest concern was the family business.””
The voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“That was never true.””
Vittorio looked around the room.
“Who are you?””
The speaker remained silent.
Then:
“Open the folder.””
Vittorio’s jaw tightened.
He hated being controlled.
He hated being ordered.
But he hated secrets even more.
Slowly, he picked up the folder.
The leather cover was old.
The edges were worn.
It had clearly been opened before.
Many times.
He opened it.
The first page was a document.
A legal document.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What is it?””
Vittorio didn’t answer immediately.
Because he wasn’t sure he understood.
Finally, he whispered:
“It’s a guardianship agreement.””
Bianca went completely still.
Emma looked confused.
“Guardianship?””
Vittorio continued reading.
His heartbeat grew louder.
“The document says that if I become unable to protect the Romano family…”
He stopped.
“What?””
Marcus stepped closer.
Vittorio looked down again.
“And control of the estate will transfer to…”
He froze.
The room became silent.
“To Lucy.””
Nobody moved.
The name hung in the air.
His daughter.
His seven-year-old daughter.
The child everyone thought was just a weakness.
The child who was actually the key to everything.
Bianca’s face turned pale.
“No.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“What?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
“You knew about this.””
Her silence confirmed it.
Marcus stared at her.
“You knew?””
Bianca looked furious.
“I knew there was a clause.””
“But not this?””
She didn’t answer.
Vittorio closed the folder.
“So this was never about me losing the inheritance.””
Bianca looked at him.
“What?””
“You weren’t trying to take control from me.””
His voice became colder.
“You were trying to remove Lucy.””
The truth settled over the room.
Because everything suddenly made sense.
The fear.
The manipulation.
The attempts to make Lucy feel unwanted.
Bianca wasn’t trying to make Vittorio abandon his daughter.
She was trying to make Lucy disappear from the center of the Romano legacy.
“Why?”” Vittorio asked.
Bianca looked away.
“Because she shouldn’t have it.””
“She’s a child.””
“She’s Alessandro’s choice.””
“And?””
“And your father made that choice because he believed blood mattered more than marriage.””
Vittorio stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Bianca laughed softly.
A bitter sound.
“It means he never trusted me.””
The room became quiet.
“You knew about the clause before you married me,” Vittorio said.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Your father told me.””
Vittorio froze.
“My father met you?””
Bianca nodded.
“Before we met.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Why?””
Bianca’s eyes moved toward the window.
“Because he knew who I was.””
Vittorio felt a chill.
“Who are you?””
She looked back at him.
And for the first time, she answered honestly.
“My father was Dante Valenti’s lawyer.””
The name struck him.
Dante.
The man from the hidden message.
The man from his father’s past.
“The business partner.””
Bianca nodded.
“Your father destroyed Dante’s company.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Vittorio shook his head.
“My father told me Dante betrayed him.””
“Your father told you what benefited him.””
Anger rose inside him.
“You’re saying everything I know is a lie?””
“No.””
Bianca looked at him.
“I’m saying you were given only the parts that protected the Romano name.””
The speaker suddenly turned on again.
Everyone looked upward.
The mysterious voice spoke.
“Enough.””
Bianca’s face changed.
She looked terrified.
The voice continued.
“Vittorio needs the complete truth.””
A pause.
“Not your version.””
Vittorio stepped toward the speaker.
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
“Tell me everything.””
The voice answered:
“Seven years ago, Alessandro Romano discovered that Dante Valenti had stolen from him.””
Bianca closed her eyes.
“No.””
The voice continued.
“He also discovered Dante had a daughter.””
Vittorio looked at Bianca.
A horrible thought formed.
“No.””
The voice said:
“The daughter was Bianca.””
Everything stopped.
For a moment, Vittorio couldn’t process it.
Bianca wasn’t just connected to Dante.
She was his daughter.
The woman he married.
The woman who had entered his family.
She had a personal connection to the war between their fathers.
Marcus whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Vittorio looked at Bianca.
“Is it true?””
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“My father was framed.””
“By mine?””
“Yes.””
“And you married me for revenge.””
Bianca’s eyes filled slightly.
Not with regret.
With anger.
“At first.””
The answer shocked him.
“At first?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t expect to love you.””
The words should have meant something once.
They didn’t.
Not anymore.
“You had years to tell me the truth.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Before Lucy was born.””
Vittorio frowned.
“What?””
Bianca’s voice softened.
“Your father threatened me.””
“My father?””
“He knew I was Dante’s daughter.””
She looked at the folder.
“He knew exactly why I was close to you.””
“Then why didn’t he stop you?””
A strange expression crossed her face.
“Because he wanted to see what I would do.””
Vittorio stared.
“He used me.””
Bianca nodded.
“He tested you.””
The room felt smaller.
Everyone had manipulated everyone.
Every person had a hidden reason.
Every person had a secret.
Except Lucy.
Lucy had only been a child.
Vittorio looked at the folder again.
“There’s more.””
Bianca looked away.
“Yes.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“The inheritance clause wasn’t the only thing your father left.””
Vittorio opened the folder again.
More pages.
More documents.
Then he saw something that made his hands go cold.
A photograph.
A baby.
A newborn girl.
Lucy.
But beneath the picture was a handwritten note.
His father’s handwriting.
*If they come for her, tell Vittorio the truth. Lucy is not only my granddaughter. She is the reason the Romano family survives.*
Vittorio stared.
“What does that mean?””
The hidden speaker remained silent.
Then finally:
“Because Lucy was never chosen because she was your daughter.””
Everyone looked up.
The voice continued.
“She was chosen because she carries something Dante Valenti spent years trying to find.””
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
No answer.
Only a new sound.
A door unlocking.
The study door opened slowly.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
Vittorio stopped breathing.
Because he knew him.
The man everyone believed had disappeared.
His father’s closest friend.
The attorney who vanished six months earlier.
The man who knew every secret of the Romano family.
“Mr. Romano,” the man said.
Vittorio stared.
“Alessandro’s attorney.””
The man nodded.
“I’m sorry it took this long.””
Vittorio stepped forward.
“Where have you been?””
The man looked past him.
At the folder.
Then at Bianca.
“I was hiding.””
“From who?””
The old man’s expression became serious.
“From the same person who has been trying to control your family since Lucy was born.””
Vittorio felt his chest tighten.
“Who?””
The attorney looked toward the hallway.
Toward where Lucy was sleeping upstairs.
Then whispered:
“The person who knows what Lucy really is.””
A silence followed.
Then he said the name.
And Vittorio realized the enemy had never been outside the Romano house.
May you like
It had been invited inside years ago.
*“Your mother.””*
