Chapter 2: The Secret Files Behind the Locked Door
The message on Emma’s phone remained glowing in Vittorio’s hand.
*There are more recordings. You need to see what happened after midnight.*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The breakfast room felt frozen in time.
The sunlight coming through the tall windows should have made the room feel warm, but Vittorio felt only cold.
He looked at Emma.
The woman who had worked in his family’s home for fifteen years was standing near the doorway with her hands clasped tightly together.
She looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for too long.
“Emma,” Vittorio said quietly.
She looked up.
“Who sent this?””
Emma swallowed.
“I did.””
The answer surprised him.
“You sent yourself a message?””
“No, sir.”” Her eyes moved toward Bianca and Marcus.
“I sent it to my own phone last night because I was afraid someone would find it before you came home.””
Vittorio’s expression hardened.
“Find what?””
Emma hesitated.
That hesitation told him everything.
There was more.
Much more.
Marcus stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.””
Vittorio turned toward him.
“Is it?””
“Yes.”” Marcus forced a laugh.
“You’re letting a housekeeper manipulate you because you’re angry.””
Emma looked hurt, but she didn’t lower her eyes.
“I’m not manipulating anyone.””
Marcus scoffed.
“Then why did you hide the video?””
“Because I was scared.””
The room went silent.
Even Bianca looked surprised.
Emma’s voice trembled.
“Do you know what it feels like to watch a child cry for help and know that if you speak, you might lose everything?””
Vittorio stared at her.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Emma looked down.
“Because every time I tried, Bianca told me you already knew.””
Vittorio frowned.
“What?””
Emma looked at Bianca.
“She told me you approved of strict discipline.””
A sharp silence followed.
Vittorio slowly turned his head.
“Did you tell people that?””
Bianca’s face tightened.
“She misunderstood.””
“No.””
Emma’s voice became stronger.
“She made sure everyone misunderstood.””
Bianca walked toward her.
“You should be careful, Emma.””
It wasn’t a loud threat.
That made it worse.
It was calm.
Controlled.
The kind of voice used by someone who was used to getting obedience.
But Vittorio stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Bianca stopped.
For the first time in years, she looked at him differently.
Not like a husband.
Like an obstacle.
Vittorio noticed.
And that realization cut deeper than he expected.
“Where is the rest of the footage?”” he asked Emma.
Emma looked toward the hallway.
“In my room.””
“Bring it.””
She nodded.
Before she could leave, Marcus moved toward her.
Too quickly.
Vittorio noticed.
“Marcus.””
His brother stopped.
“What?””
“Where are you going?””
Marcus smiled faintly.
“I was just going to talk to Emma.””
“No.””
Vittorio’s voice was firm.
“You weren’t.””
Marcus stared at him.
Then slowly stepped back.
Emma disappeared upstairs.
The moment she was gone, Bianca folded her arms.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
She walked closer.
“You’re believing a frightened employee over your own wife.””
“My wife made my daughter eat beside a dog bowl.””
Bianca’s face tightened.
“You keep repeating that like it changes everything.””
“It does.””
“No, Vittorio.”” She lowered her voice.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation that could make a child being humiliated acceptable.
A few minutes later, Emma returned carrying a small black storage device.
Her hands were shaking.
“This is everything.””
Vittorio looked at it.
“How long have you had this?””
Emma looked away.
“Three months.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Three months?””
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“Why keep recording?””
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I realized nobody would believe Lucy.””
The words hit him hard.
Nobody would believe Lucy.
His daughter.
His little girl.
The child who had always run into his arms whenever he came home.
The child who once told him she wanted to become a veterinarian because “animals deserve kindness too.””
And someone had turned that kindness against her.
Vittorio connected the device to the large screen in the breakfast room.
Everyone watched.
The first video appeared.
A date.
Three months earlier.
The same room.
Different morning.
Lucy sat at the table quietly.
Bianca stood behind her.
“You’re still making that face.””
Lucy looked confused.
“What face?””
“That sad little face.””
“I’m just tired.””
Bianca leaned down.
“You know what happens when children pretend to be unhappy?””
Lucy shook her head.
“They become difficult.””
The video paused.
Vittorio’s hand curled into a fist.
Emma whispered.
“There are more.””
The next recording.
Another day.
Another punishment.
Another time Lucy was separated from the family meal.
Then another.
And another.
Each video showed the same pattern.
Bianca finding reasons.
Marcus encouraging her.
Lucy becoming quieter.
Smaller.
More afraid.
But then something changed.
A recording from two weeks earlier appeared.
The room went silent.
Because this time Marcus wasn’t laughing.
He was angry.
The camera showed Bianca and Marcus arguing in the hallway.
The angle was far away, but their voices were clear.
“You’re going too far,” Marcus said.
Bianca turned sharply.
“You were the one who told me to make her afraid.””
“I meant discipline.””
“No. You meant control.””
Marcus went quiet.
Vittorio leaned closer.
Control.
That word stayed in his mind.
The video continued.
Bianca crossed her arms.
“If Lucy stops trusting her father, everything becomes easier.””
Vittorio felt his stomach drop.
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“She’s still a child.””
Bianca laughed.
“She’s Vittorio’s weakness.””
Nobody in the room breathed.
“She is the only thing he loves more than this family name.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“And if he finds out?””
Bianca smiled.
“He won’t.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Vittorio stood completely still.
This was no longer about punishment.
No longer about cruelty.
This was planned.
A deliberate attempt to break his daughter.
But why?
Why would Bianca want Lucy afraid of him?
Why would she want his daughter to stop trusting him?
Emma looked at him carefully.
“There’s one more.””
Vittorio turned.
“One more?””
She nodded.
“I didn’t want to show you this.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s the reason I knew this wasn’t only about Lucy.””
She pressed play.
The video was dark.
Nighttime.
A hallway.
The camera angle was different.
A hidden camera.
Vittorio watched Bianca enter his private office.
His office.
The room where he kept business documents, family records, and personal files.
Marcus followed her.
“What are we looking for?”” Marcus whispered.
Bianca closed the door.
“The documents.””
“Which ones?””
“The ones that give Vittorio control.””
Vittorio felt his chest tighten.
On screen, Bianca opened one of his locked drawers.
Marcus looked nervous.
“This is dangerous.””
Bianca didn’t care.
“Everything has been arranged.””
“For what?””
She smiled.
“For when Vittorio loses everything.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Vittorio looked at Bianca.
His wife.
The mother of his child.
The person who had slept beside him for years.
“What documents?””
Bianca didn’t answer.
“Bianca.””
Still nothing.
Marcus suddenly moved.
“It’s not what you think.””
Vittorio turned toward him.
“You broke into my office.””
“We were trying to protect the family.””
“You were stealing from me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice changed.
Almost desperate.
“You don’t understand. Bianca wasn’t just hurting Lucy.””
Vittorio stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Bianca.
And for the first time, Vittorio saw something he never expected.
Marcus was afraid of her too.
“She never told you why she married you,” Marcus said.
Bianca’s face changed instantly.
“Stop.””
But Marcus continued.
“She never told you what she wanted from the Romano family.””
Vittorio felt the room closing around him.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Your father’s inheritance.””
A heavy silence followed.
Then Bianca’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And the color drained from her face.
Vittorio noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, Vittorio reached out.
Bianca stepped back.
For the first time, she looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
Because whoever was calling…
Was someone she didn’t want Vittorio to meet.
The ringing stopped.
A message appeared.
Vittorio saw only three words before Bianca grabbed the phone away.
*He knows everything.*

And in that moment, Vittorio realized the question was no longer why Bianca had hurt Lucy.
The real question was how long she had been planning to destroy the Romano family from the inside.
