Chapter 5: The Name Written in the Shadows
The message on Emma’s phone sat there like a warning carved into stone.
*Ask Bianca who paid for Lucy’s silence.*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The sentence was too heavy.
Too precise.
It wasn’t a random accusation.
It wasn’t a guess.
Whoever sent it knew something.
Something hidden.
Something Vittorio had not even considered.
His eyes slowly moved toward Bianca.
For the first time since the morning began, she had no immediate response.
No sharp comment.
No confident smile.
No carefully prepared explanation.
Just silence.
And Vittorio noticed.
“Who paid?””
Bianca looked away.
“Don’t do this.””
His expression hardened.
“Don’t do what?””
“Don’t let someone manipulate you.””
He stepped closer.
“Someone?””
His voice dropped.
“You mean the man who just proved he knows everything happening inside this house?””
Bianca crossed her arms.
“You don’t know who that was.””
“You do.””
“No.””
“You do.””
The room became a battlefield without anyone raising their voice.
Vittorio had spent years negotiating million-dollar deals.
He knew when someone was hiding information.
Bianca was not confused.
She was calculating.
“Tell me the name,” he said.
She remained silent.
“Bianca.””
Nothing.
Then Marcus spoke.
“She knows.””
Everyone turned.
Bianca looked at him with pure anger.
“You really want to destroy yourself?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I already did.””
Vittorio stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus looked exhausted.
“I should have told you months ago.””
“Months?””
“Yes.””
Vittorio felt his patience disappear.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“That my wife was hurting my daughter?””
Marcus looked down.
“I knew she was planning something.””
The confession landed harder than anything else.
“You knew.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Vittorio walked toward him.
For a moment, Marcus looked like he expected anger.
Maybe even a punch.
But Vittorio only asked:
“Why?””
Marcus had no answer.
And that was worse.
“Why did you let my daughter suffer?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because I was afraid.””
Vittorio stared.
“Afraid of Bianca?””
Marcus looked at her.
Then slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
Bianca laughed.
A cold, quiet laugh.
“This is pathetic.””
She walked toward the door.
“I’m leaving.””
Vittorio stepped in front of her.
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You can’t stop me.””
“Actually, I can.””
“You think locking me inside this house makes you powerful?””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Finding out the truth makes me powerful.””
For the first time, Bianca looked uncertain.
Emma watched silently.
Then Vittorio spoke.
“Search the house.””
Bianca’s face changed.
“What?””
“Every office. Every drawer. Every safe.””
“You don’t have the right.””
“I have every right.””
She smiled faintly.
“You still believe that.””
Again.
That phrase.
That confidence.
It bothered him.
Because it suggested something.
Something about the house.
Something about ownership.
Before anyone moved, Bianca’s phone vibrated.
She looked down.
A message.
Vittorio saw the fear return.
“Who is it?””
She locked the screen.
“No one.””
“Give me the phone.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know what you’re asking for.””
He stared at her.
“Try me.””
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Bianca laughed softly.
“You really are your father’s son.””
Vittorio froze.
Nobody mentioned Alessandro casually.
Not anymore.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you always think control is the same as protection.””
The words struck a nerve.
Because maybe once, he had believed that.
Maybe he had spent years chasing power because he was afraid of losing people.
His daughter.
His company.
His family.
But he knew one thing now.
Power without trust was meaningless.
“Who sent the message?”” he asked again.
Bianca looked at him.
Then said something unexpected.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even Marcus.
But something in her expression was different.
Fear.
Real fear.
“I don’t know who sent it,” she repeated.
Vittorio studied her.
“Then who are you afraid of?””
Bianca didn’t answer.
And that silence told him there was a name she couldn’t say.
A name that frightened her more than him.
Emma suddenly spoke.
“Sir.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I remember something.””
“What?””
“About the night I recorded the video.””
Vittorio turned.
“You said there was more?””
Emma nodded.
“I heard Bianca talking to someone after midnight.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Male or female?””
“Male.””
The room went still.
“What did he say?””
Emma looked uncomfortable.
“He said…”
She stopped.
Vittorio waited.
“He said, ‘You’re running out of time.’”
Bianca’s face went pale.
Marcus noticed.
“You know who that is.””
Bianca didn’t respond.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Don’t you?””
Finally, Bianca whispered:
“Yes.””
Everyone waited.
“Who?””
She looked at Vittorio.
And for the first time, there was no arrogance in her eyes.
Only fear.
“Your father’s former business partner.””
Vittorio frowned.
“My father didn’t have one.””
Bianca shook her head.
“You were told that.””
The words hit him.
“You’re saying my father lied to me?””
“I’m saying Alessandro Romano buried many things.””
Vittorio looked away.
The possibility was disturbing.
Because his father had always been secretive.
But he had never imagined something like this.
“What was his name?””
Bianca hesitated.
Then said:
“Dante Valenti.””
The name meant nothing at first.
Then a memory surfaced.
An old photograph.
A black-and-white image from his father’s office.
Two men standing beside each other.
His father.
And another man.
A man whose face had been cut out of every copy he had ever seen.
Vittorio felt a chill.
“Why was his face removed?””
Bianca looked at him.
“Because your father wanted you to forget he existed.””
A silence followed.
Then Vittorio walked toward the office.
“Show me.””
Bianca didn’t move.
“Vittorio.””
“Show me.””
“You’re not ready.””
He turned.
“That’s what everyone says when they want to hide something.””
They entered his father’s old study.
The room had remained untouched since Alessandro’s death.
Dark wood.
Leather chairs.
Shelves full of old business records.
A place filled with history.
And secrets.
Bianca walked to a cabinet.
She touched the side panel.
Then pressed a hidden button.
A small compartment opened.
Vittorio stared.
“You knew about this?””
“Yes.””
“What’s inside?””
Bianca reached in.
But before she could remove anything, Vittorio heard a sound.
A click.
A door locking.
Everyone turned.
The study door had closed.
Marcus grabbed the handle.
“It’s locked.””
Vittorio looked at Bianca.
Her face had changed.
“What?””
She whispered:
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.””
A small speaker hidden in the wall turned on.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Older.
Calm.
Controlled.
The same voice from the phone call.
“Vittorio Romano.””
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
“You finally opened the room your father wanted you to find.””
Vittorio stepped closer.
“Dante?””
A pause.
Then a quiet laugh.
“No.””
The voice became colder.
“Dante was only the beginning.””
Vittorio felt his heart sink.
“Who are you?””
Another pause.
Then the man answered:
“The person who has been protecting your family from the truth.””
The hidden compartment opened fully.
Inside was a single folder.
And on the cover was a name written in black ink.
Vittorio stared at it.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
It belonged to his father.
The folder was labeled:
*THE ROMANO CHILD.*
And beneath the title was a date.
May you like
A date from seven years ago.
The year Lucy was born.
