Chapter 9: The Final Betrayal
I spent the night staring at Alex.
Not because I hated him.
Because I was afraid.
Everyone I trusted had secrets.
Emily.
My father.
My uncle.
Vanessa.
And now my brother.
“Tell me,” I said.
Alex looked exhausted.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
He sat down.
“I didn’t disappear because Vanessa forced me.””
Silence.
“I disappeared because I helped her.””
Emily stepped back.
“What?””
Alex looked ashamed.
“I thought she was exposing Dad.””
My stomach tightened.
“Dad?””
Alex nodded.
“Your father wasn’t innocent.””
I felt like I had been punched.
“He was involved in illegal business deals.””
Emily looked at me.
“Daniel…”
Alex continued.
“Vanessa approached me because she had evidence. She convinced me Dad destroyed our family.””
“And you believed her?””
“I was young.””
“You were my brother.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“I made the worst mistake of my life.””
The truth came out.
Alex helped Vanessa create the disappearance story.
He helped convince people Emily left.
But then he discovered Vanessa wasn’t exposing corruption.
She wanted control.
“When I tried to stop her, she trapped me too.””
I looked at him.
“So you were a victim.””
Alex shook his head.
“I was also the reason your life was destroyed.””
No one spoke.
Then Lily walked into the room.
She had heard everything.
“Are you my uncle?””
Alex looked at her.
“Yes.””
She studied him.
“Did you hurt Mommy?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I helped someone who hurt her.””
Lily looked down.
Then she said:
“Then you have to help fix it.””
Alex closed his eyes.
“I will.””
That evening, we prepared the final evidence.
Everything pointed back to Vanessa.
But one thing remained.
Where was she?
The answer came at midnight.
A security camera alert.
Someone had entered the old estate.
The same place where Emily had been hidden.
I grabbed my coat.
“No.””
Emily stood.
“I’m coming.””
Alex grabbed his keys.
“We all are.””
When we arrived, the estate was dark.
The old oak door stood open.
The room behind it was empty.
Except for one thing.
A letter.
My name.
Daniel.
I opened it.
You finally understand.
The handwriting was Vanessa’s.
But the next line made my heart stop.
I never wanted your wife.
I wanted what was inside your family.
Alex read over my shoulder.
“What does that mean?””
Then we heard footsteps.
From upstairs.
Someone was there.
We followed the sound.
At the top of the stairs stood Vanessa.
She wasn’t running.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was smiling.
“You took long enough.””
Police surrounded the building.
Detectives stepped forward.
“Vanessa Reed, you are under arrest.””
She laughed.
“You think this is over?””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her smile faded.
“Because Daniel…”
She looked at Alex.
“Your brother still has one secret.””
Alex froze.
Vanessa looked at me.
“One secret that will destroy everything.””
The detective grabbed her arm.
But before she was taken away, she whispered:
May you like
“Ask him who Lily’s real father is.””
The world stopped.
